The trend is continuing and appears to be skewing toward chocolate.Americans are favoring chocolate over other kinds of candy according to data from the National Confectioners Association. Looking at sales from mid-March through early August, all candy sales are up 3.8 percent during this time period. Chocolate sales are up 5.5 percent, and premium chocolate sales are up 12.5 percent.“Consumers appreciate and value chocolate and candy during these uncertain times because of their uncanny ability to boost moods and lighten perspectives, according to new data from NCA,” the organization said in their press release.The trade organization representing the candy industry found that sales of sweet treats at grocery stores have grown by double-digits. (KGTV) - There is no threat to Valhalla High School in El Cajon, a Grossmont Union High School District Spokeswoman said Monday.School officials and San Diego County Sheriff’s Deputies investigated rumors and an unrelated social media post of a picture taken last summer featuring a student with a possible weapon off campus, reported Public Information Officer Catherine Martin.Staff members and deputies determined the BB gun was not in the student’s possession, Martin posted on Twitter.Also Monday, a 16-year-old girl at a different Valhalla High School, this one in Mt. Pleasant, New York was arrested for a threat, according to Lt. Robert Miliambro of the Mt. EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) -- Jurors Wednesday found that an officer in El Cajon acted reasonably when he fatally shot Ugandan Immigrant Alfred Olango. The jury found Richard Gonsalves' actions not negligent 12-0. On September 27, 2016, Olango’s sister called 911 to report that her 38-year-old brother was displaying erratic behavior and walking out into traffic. Two officers arrived and spotted Olango in the parking lot of a fast food restaurant on the 800 block of Broadway, ordering him to remove his hands from his pockets. Olango pulled something out of his pocket officers believed was a gun and, according to police, he assumed “what appeared to be a shooting stance” and made some kind of movement. EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) -- Two firefighters were injured fighting a blaze that sparked near El Cajon Wednesday afternoon according to Cal Fire. Cal Fire says the blaze started on the 5500 block of Dehesa Road around 4 p.m. and burned 25 acres. As of 6:40 p.m. Wednesday, the fire is 50 percent contained. An incident report shows that two firefighters were injured, though the extent of their injuries was unclear. The blaze did for a brief time threaten structures, but none were damaged. Due to the blaze, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department evacuated Vista De La Montana east of Dehesa Road. Evacuation warnings were also issued for Trafalgar Road, Calle De Nicole, and Vista De La Montana. The agency tweeted just before 7 p.m. that all evacuation orders and warnings had been lifted. #VistaFire [update] All evacuation warnings have been lifted for Vista De La Montana, Trasalger Rd, and Calle De Nicole. (KGTV) — A family jewelry shop in El Cajon is out tens of thousands of dollars after a brazen robbery Friday.A couple entered Ishtar Jewelry Store on Avocado Avenue and began browsing around. It was a seemingly ordinary evening."They were looking for different pieces of jewelry, bracelets, necklaces," said Nadin Toma, the store owner's daughter. "My mom was the one who was helping them out. The female found a piece that she liked."After that, Toma said the woman claimed she needed to get her wallet from the car to purchase the piece of jewelry."Our door to get in is an electric door," explained Toma. "We have to buzz anyone in and out just for security purposes."So, the woman was buzzed out, but Toma said she held the door open.That's when the man by her side made his move, jumping over the display counter, snatching up a handful of gold chains, then running out of the wide-open front door."They just grabbed and ran as fast as they could," Toma said. "They got away."Toma estimates the cost of the gold chains were anywhere from ,000 to ,000.But, the thief also left something behind. His fanny pack hooked onto the front door and broke off his body as he ran away.Toma said inside the fanny pack was the suspect's identification card, which she gave to police.She also said a Good Samaritan wrote down the license plate number of the car the couple used to get away."With any robbery, it's very painful for anyone who goes through it," said Toma. "Unfortunately, it happened to us."Toma is hoping the ID card and the license plate number will help police track down the suspect.El Cajon Police is actively investigating. 1666
