So I’m withdrawing from @ProjectLincoln to devote more time to family matters. And I’ll be taking a Twitter hiatus. Needless to say, I continue to support the Lincoln Project and its mission. Passionately.— George Conway (@gtconway3d) August 24, 2020 258
Speaking from a parking lot near his hometown of Scranton, Pennsylvania, Democratic nominee Joe Biden said that he would not make schools require students to get a coronavirus vaccine. The town hall was hosted by CNN drive-in movie style. The former vice president took questions from voters in a state that could be pivotal in this year’s presidential election.During the town hall, Biden repeated that he does not trust President Donald Trump’s handling of the coronavirus. But he said he would take a vaccine approved by the Trump administration — if Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases said it was safe."I don't trust the president on vaccines. I trust Dr. [Anthony] Fauci," Biden said. "If Fauci says a vaccine is safe, I would take the vaccine. We should listen to the scientists, not to the president."In particular, Biden was angered over comments made by President Donald Trump to journalist Bob Woodward that became public last week. In the spring, Trump confided to Woodward in March that he did not emphasize the risks of the coronavirus in order not to cause a panic. I still like playing it down because I don't want to create a panic," Trump told Woodward."He knew it and did nothing. It's close to criminal," Biden said on Thursday.Trump and his public health experts have been at odds in recent weeks over the timing of when a vaccine would be both approved and widely distributed. Trump has suggested that a vaccine could be available much sooner than some experts have suggested.Trump said on Wednesday, "We are ready to go immediately as the vaccine is announced. It could be announced in October, it could be announced a little after that."But CDC Director Robert Redfield said it might not be until the middle of 2021 before a vaccine is widely available."I think we're probably looking at third late second quarter, third quarter 2021,” he said.Trump later said that Redfield was “confused” over the timing of a vaccine."I think he made a mistake when he said that,” Trump said. “That's just incorrect information. I called him and he didn't tell me that and I think he got the message maybe confused. maybe it was stated incorrectly.” 2222
Some of the things you buy on eBay or Amazon could be going up in price, but President Donald Trump argues it will be better for American business.President Trump plans to withdraw from an old postal agreement that has allowed Chinese companies to ship small packages to the United States at a discounted price, often cheaper than what it costs for Americans to send things.“Products coming in from China, for instance, can come all the way from Shanghai to L.A. and have to pay a lower cost than if you or I wanted to ship a product across the street,” says Linda Dempsey, the VP of international economic affairs at the National Association of Manufacturers. The National Association of Manufacturers says the move will only impact smaller items, say for example, yoga pants on eBay. This particular example only costs a dollar, plus there’s no charge for shipping, although they’re coming from China. But, while you might not pay for shipping on this particular order, you’re paying for it in other ways you might not know about.“We might not see it in that package, say of yoga pants that's being shipped, but we're paying the subsidy through taxpayer dollars,” explains Dempsey. “We're paying for it as consumers when we go to the postal service and send a small package. We're paying higher rates for that because the postal service is being forced to subsidize these foreign shippers into the United States.”Critics also argue the cheaper rates hurt American businesses, and the president's proposal could help keep or create jobs in the United States.“It gives manufactures a fair chance at competing in the U.S. systems,” says Dempsey. While prices might go up for some products, there could be an upside for consumers.“We'll see how much those packages go up in terms of the foreign packages coming in,” Dempsey says. “We'll also be looking to see if the package prices for U.S. shipments will be going down.” 1925
Seven members of President Trump’s Cabinet told Scripps News they do not fly on private jets paid for by taxpayers.Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price drew attention for taking five private jet flights on official business last week instead of flying commercially. His staff said using a private plane allowed him to maximize his time on the ground managing hurricane preparation and recovery efforts.“Commercial travel is not always feasible,” Price spokeswoman Charmaine Yoest said.We asked other members of the president’s Cabinet if they travel for official business on private jets, instead of taking a commercial flight or government plane. The responses show a different approach to private jet use, varying by agency.Cabinet secretaries who have not flown taxpayer-funded private jets include HUD Secretary Ben Carson, Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin and Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue, according to their spokespeople.Perdue has flown to disaster sites on military aircraft and to remote areas on forest service aircraft, his office said. Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao “insists on flying commercial and does so whenever possible,” a department spokeswoman said. In some cases she will use a government plane if security is a concern or if commercial options are not available.Education Secretary Betsy DeVos pays for all of her travel out of pocket, her spokeswoman said, except for one 3 round-trip Amtrak ticket from Washington to Philadelphia paid for by the government. In July, Forbes reported DeVos is worth billion.Linda McMahon, head of the Small Business Administration, flies on both commercial and private flights, SBA spokesman Terry Sutherland said. On the “rare occasion” McMahon travels on a private flight, she has covered the difference in cost out-of-pocket between private and commercial flights, Sutherland said. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross usually flies commercial flights but he and his staff will sometimes take a private plane in Ross’ own personal “jet share” program. In those cases, Ross covers the entire cost himself, a Commerce spokesman said.Other Cabinet agencies did not immediately respond to inquiries about whether their secretaries fly private jets as part of their duties. 2266
