A centuries-old question surrounding Stonehenge has been solved, linking the tall megaliths to a geographic area where they may have come from. The original source of the massive sarsen stones has long been debated, at least four centuries according to the study. The smaller “bluestones” near the center of the circular monument have been traced to an area in Wales, about 200 km away, in an earlier study.Geologists used geochemical data from the sarsens and compared it to the geochemical signature of different regions.“From this, we identify West Woods, Wiltshire, 25 km (roughly 15.5 miles) north of Stonehenge, as the most probable source area for the majority of sarsens at the monument,” researchers stated in their study. The sarsens were erected during the mid-third millennium BCE, and weigh roughly 20 metric tons. Only 52 of the original about 80 sarsen stones remain. 888

A co-author of a criminal justice textbook that included convicted sexual assailant Brock Turner’s photo next to the section titled “Rape” is standing by their decision.Last week, a student at Washington State University posted a photo of the book page on Facebook, and it has since been shared over 100,000 times.Callie Rennison, a University of Colorado Denver School of Public Affairs professor and co-author of “Introduction to Criminal Justice: Systems, Diversity and Change,” said that the vast majority of reaction she’s received has been positive. However, critics have said that even though Turner’s crimes may fit the FBI definition of rape, he was not convicted of rape as defined by California law—instead he was convicted of sexual assault.Currently, the federal definition states that if there’s penetration “with any object, any body part, that’s not consensual, then that’s rape,” Rennison said. “Brock Turner was convicted of a penetration offense and under these definitions that’s rape.”Rennison also points out that critics may not have read the entire section of the book and missed some key context.“That particular section is about how definitions change over time,” Rennison said.In fact, California did alter their definition of rape, in part due to Turner's case. She says they will still add even more context in upcoming editions of the book, a fact the publisher confirmed, as well. She contends that the reason Turner’s image was used in the first place was to keep the curriculum current and thus relatable to students in 2017.“This is who students know and students talk about,” she said. “Contemporary references are a must. Looking at older books students aren’t engaged. They don’t think it applies to them in their world.”She also hopes it starts a larger conversation about punishment. Turner’s six-month sentence—of which he served three months—was widely covered in the media.“This allows us to have the discussion about what is the time most people serve for this, and students are shocked to learn that often it's nothing.”Rennison said she and her co-author, Mary Dodge, are the first all-female team of authors to pen a criminal justice textbook.Turner’s attorney, Mike Armstrong, declined to comment for the story, and attempts to reach Turner’s parents were unsuccessful. 2332

A federal judge ruled that Detroit police officers cannot use batons, shields, gas or bullets against protesters for at least the next two weeks.U.S. District Court Judge Laurie Michelson issued a ruling Friday night partially granting a temporary restraining order in the lawsuit filed by activist group Detroit Will Breathe against the City of Detroit and Detroit Police Department. In the order, Michelson ruled that the city cannot use "striking weapons, chemical agents, or rubber bullets" against the protesters who do not pose a physical threat to the safety of the public or the police. Officers also cannot use chokeholds against the protesters."The Court recognizes that police officers are often faced with dangerous and rapidly evolving situations while trying to enforce the law and maintain the safety of the public. And it is important that police officers have non-lethal options to use to protect themselves and the public when necessary," Michelson wrote. "And any possible benefit police officers could gain from deploying chemical agents, projectiles, or striking weapons against demonstrators who pose no threat and are not resisting lawful commands is outweighed by the irreparable harm peaceful protestors would face."Michelson ruled in part that police officers using excessive force does violate the protesters First and Fourth Amendment rights.Citing different videos as evidence, Michelson wrote it "establishes that at least some Plaintiffs have a likelihood of success on their claims that the DPD used excessive force against them."This article was written by WXYZ. 1602

A judge is coming under fire after allowing five adults to remain free on bail as they await trial for allegedly keeping 11 starving children in a filthy New Mexico compound, surrounded by weapons. The decision, which has sparked community backlash and threats against the judge, comes two years after New Mexico voters overwhelmingly approved a constitutional amendment that revamped the state's bail laws and raised the legal threshold for detaining suspects before trial. In this case, authorities have described the three women and two men as Muslim extremists who allegedly prepared the children to conduct school shootings. They argued that if the defendants were released from custody, there would be "a substantial likelihood" they could commit new crimes, court documents said. 792

A day after President Donald Trump and Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden squared off in what proved to be a more civilized and substantive debate, both candidates will return to the campaign trail to deliver their final pitches to the American people.Biden will deliver remarks from his home state of Delaware on Friday afternoon — his first public appearance this week outside of Thursday's debate. Since last week, Biden has laid low, allowing surrogates like his running mate, Sen. Kamala Harris, and former President Barack Obama campaign for him as he focused on debate prep.Biden's remarks are currently scheduled to take place at 2:30 p.m. ET.Later Friday, Trump will continue his busy tour of swing states, as he makes multiple appearances in the key battleground state of Florida.Trump will first hold an afternoon rally at The Villages — one of the country's largest retirement communities. Retirees are a key demographic that Trump carried in 2016, but new polling from the AARP shows older Americans favor Biden by a slight margin.Later in the evening, Trump will hold a second rally in Pensacola, Florida. While Biden chose to eschew travel for debate prep this week, Trump made visits to several key battleground states, including Pennsylvania, Arizona and Georgia.Recent polls show that Biden leads Trump anywhere from 3 points to 10 points in the general election vote share. Polls also show that Biden leads Trump in most key swing states, but by a thinner margin. With election day 11 days away, many states have already seen a record numbers of early votes. 1590
