WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis unveiled a bill Monday aimed at shutting down protests on roadways and increasing penalties for those that threaten the safety of law enforcement officers.Speaking at the Polk County Sheriff's Office on Monday, DeSantis unveiled the Combating Violence, Disorder, and Looting and Law Enforcement Protection Act, which needs to be voted on by the state Legislature."Recently in our country we have seen attacks on law enforcement," DeSantis said. "We've seen disorder and tumult in many cities across the country."Calling it the "boldest and most comprehensive piece of legislation" of its kind in the country, DeSantis said, if approved, the bill would make it a third-degree felony for those that take part in a violent or disorderly assembly.In addition, protesters could be charged with a felony if they "incapacitate" roadways. The bill would also says that drivers are not liable "for injury or death caused if fleeing for safety from a mob.""We've seen people take over interstates. Tim Polley said. “Don’t we all need some joy in our lives?”The answer for Grant County’s deputies is "yes."“We make a legit traffic stop,” Conrad said. “In lieu of writing a citation, we hand out a gift card to our local businesses.”Several drivers who got a Sheriff's Santa surprise were both grateful and thankful, a nice reminder to use a turn signal.The project does more than just promote good driving, it also drives business to local shops and restaurants who could use a customer boost during the coronavirus pandemic.“Typically, we deal with the more negative aspects of humanity, so when we can do anything that's positive, it's a blessing to us,” Conrad said. “We swore an oath to the Constitution. Tripadvisor says that this year's figures are down from an estimated 70% of Americans travelling in 2019.Tripadvisor surveyed Americans from October 16 to 20, so it is possible increased travel restrictions associated with a rise in cases could scare off some from traveling by Thanksgiving. Many states are telling travelers to quarantine for two weeks before coming into contact with others. The vast majority of those traveling, 76%, say they will drive to their Thanksgiving destination, compared to just 11% who say they will fly.The survey found that 22% are staying in a hotel or vacation rental to practice social distancing from friends and family."Despite COVID-19 concerns, the majority of Americans are still traveling this Thanksgiving. The way in which consumers travel, however, will look very different from past years," said Christopher Hsi, Consumer Market Research Lead Analyst for Tripadvisor. "This year, we can expect shorter trips with smaller groups of people for more intimate, close knit gatherings. Many are taking day trips (24%) or spending one night at their destination. Americans are also continuing to avoid big cities, instead opting for warm weather and beach destinations in southern states.
