City officials voted unanimously on Thursday to install two new rainbow-painted crosswalks to show support for the LGBTQ community in Phoenix. The vote was in response to interest by community groups after noting several other cities across the country have installed rainbow crosswalks as a symbol of inclusiveness with the LGBTQ community. "Phoenix values and embraces its LGBTQ brothers and sisters," Mayor Greg Stanton said. "Phoenix is committed to ensuring equal treatment and rights for everyone and showing our support because we know diversity makes us stronger."  The proposed rainbow crosswalks would be installed at two existing pedestrian crosswalks, located at Central Avenue and Portland Street, and the other at the crossing of 7th and Glenrosa avenues. The Phoenix Pride Community Foundation, one-n-ten, and Aunt Rita's Foundation have offered to cover the costs of materials, installation and ongoing maintenance for the rainbow-painted portions of the crosswalks that are not already maintained by the city. All three groups are non-profits that serve and assist LGBTQ individuals and the community."The City of Phoenix has always maxed out its score on the equality index. CLEVELAND — Scientists at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner Research Institute have successfully reversed Alzheimer's disease in mice.According to a news release, the researchers reversed the formation of harmful plaque in the mice's brains by gradually reducing an enzyme called BACE1, improving their mental function.“To our knowledge, this is the first observation of such a dramatic reversal of amyloid deposition in any study of Alzheimer’s disease mouse models,” says Riqiang Yan, one of the scientists on the team. The study raises hopes that drugs aimed at this same enzyme will soon be able to treat Alzheimer's disease in humans. You can read the full study in the Journal of Experimental Medicine here. 735

Then rage overcomes you.In a Facebook post, Cody Vickers documented a similar scenario that happened in Columbus while he was at a construction job. His photo shows a butt-naked man bathing in water spewing from a broken water main near North High Street in Clintonville, the Columbus Dispatch reported.He said, “It’s not every day you see a naked man come out of his house screaming and cussing ... then comes off the porch and finishes taking his shower where the excavator hit the line," in a Facebook post that has since gone viral, getting 137,000 shares and more than 14,000 likes."I was in the f****** shower. I got soap all over me," said Vickers, repeating what the man said when he was met with a trench and a fountain of water. CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A driver was detained late Tuesday evening after military officials said he tried to enter Naval Base Coronado property without authorization.The incident occurred at around 10:15 p.m. at the Stockdale Boulevard gate at Naval Air Station North Island, near Third Street and Alameda Boulevard.Kevin Dixon, with Naval Base Coronado Public Affairs, said a vehicle tried to enter the base but was stopped by barriers.Dixon confirmed the driver was detained, but no other information on the incident was released.The investigation forced the closure of the gate for several hours.There were no reported injuries to any military personnel. 668

CORONADO (KGTV) -- A man was taken into custody Wednesday on suspicion of sexually assaulting a woman on a boat anchored in San Diego Bay, Harbor Police announced.Pablo Alvarez, 38, was booked on five felony counts related to sexual assault by force, according to jail records.The alleged assault happened in the waters off Coronado's Tidelands Park in what's known as the A-4 anchorage, a place where several dozen boats are anchored just north of the Coronado Bridge.There is no dock, so boaters must use a dinghy or a kayak to access the larger vessels in the anchorage.Early Wednesday morning, the victim fled a sailboat in the anchorage using a kayak, but the kayak capsized in the darkness, forcing the woman to swim the rest of the way to shore, said Harbor Police Lt. Victor Banuelos.The woman managed to call the police just before 4:45 a.m.Alvarez and the woman were the only people on board the sailboat at the time, according to Banuelos. The nature of their relationship is under investigation.Alvarez is scheduled to appear in court Friday.Harbor Police asked anyone with information to call detectives at 619-686-8132. 1141
