SAN DIEGO (CNS) — The San Diego County Credit Union announced Wednesday it set a new Guinness world record for the most paper shredded in eight hours. The paper shredding company Shred-It shredded 239,060 pounds of paper Saturday at the credit union's 2019 Super Shred event at SDCCU Stadium.SDCCU broke the previous record for the most paper shredded in eight hours, which was set at its 2017 Super Shred event. The credit union also holds the record for the most paper collected in 24 hours."We thank everyone who came out to the SDCCU Super Shred event this past weekend and helped us achieve a new Guinness World Records title," said SDCCU President and CEO Teresa Campbell. "SDCCU is pleased to not only achieve a new record, but to provide this much-needed, free service to the community."SDCCU also collected more than ,000 for the Stuff the Bus program, which provides food to more than 22,000 homeless students around the county. SDCCU runs the program with the San Diego County Office of Education and local iHeartMedia radio stations.Since it began holding paper shredding events in 2007, SDCCU has shredded more than 4.3 million pounds of paper and saved residents nearly 0,000 in document shredding costs. According to the credit union, each shredding event helps thousands of residents dispose of their sensitive documents."With a greater prevalence of fraud and identity theft in recent years, it is becoming more and more important to properly dispose of confidential, personal information," Campbell said. "The first rule in preventing identity theft is, if you don't need it, shred it." 1616

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego city leaders said Tuesday that more than 1,100 people will secure permanent or longer-term housing by the end of the year through Operation Shelter to Home -- the city's COVID-19 homeless shelter at the San Diego Convention Center. The shelter opened its doors in April as a measure to halt the spread of COVID-19 among San Diego's homeless population, and currently houses around 900 people per day, and housed a peak of 1,300 people daily, according to San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer.Faulconer called the project "a public health success story" at a Tuesday morning news conference, saying only 27 residents and staff tested positive for COVID-19 out of more than 9,300 tests administered since the shelter opened.Officials said that to date, more than 840 individuals and 45 families sheltered at the convention center have obtained housing, while around 400 others will soon be moved into housing units the city secured through the purchase of two hotels in Mission Valley and Kearny Mesa. That purchase will convert the hotels into 332 furnished apartment units and residents will receive on-site supportive services, officials said.In addition to those moved into housing, others will be matched to housing resources like vouchers or other rental subsidies, the city said."This pandemic brought our region together like never before to work toward our shared goals of protecting our most vulnerable residents and removing barriers to housing -- and now over 1,100 people will have a permanent place of their own to call home," Faulconer said.San Diego Mayor-elect Todd Gloria said the collaborative efforts to bring Operation Shelter to Home together was "a bright spot" amid the pandemic."This is a testament to what we can do if we choose to do it," said Gloria, who said efforts like Operation Shelter to Home must be continued even after the pandemic ends."It shouldn't take a pandemic to care about our unsheltered population," he said. 1983

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Power was restored Saturday afternoon for more than 2,000 utilities customers in Mid City who were without electricity for more than five hours.2,216 customers in University Heights, North Park, Normal Heights, Kensington, Talmadge and the College Area lost power just after 10 a.m., according to San Diego Gas and Electric's online outage map.The blackout resulted from a problem with underground electrical equipment that crews were working to repair, according to SDGE spokesman Joe Britton. All customers had their power back on by about 3:50 p.m., Britton said. 591

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister reminded local residents today there is just one week remaining to reclaim more than 0,000 in tax refunds before the money enters the county's general fund.``The impacts of COVID-19 have left many families in need of money, so we want to return every cent available,'' McAllister said. ``Tell your friends, family, and coworkers to check the list on sdttc.com.''San Diegans can visit that website to see if their name is on the list of the 1,190 refunds that total 0,324. The average refund is 8.If a resident does find their name on the list, they can follow the instructions on the unclaimed money page to file a refund claim by October 26.If owed a refund, email the claim to refunds@sdcounty.ca.gov or call 1-877-829-4732 for more information. Anyone can sign up to receive emails when new unclaimed money lists are posted.``San Diegans have filed claims for only ,504 of this money since we posted the refund list in August, meaning 2,820 will be rolled over to the county's general fund if it is not claimed in the next week,'' said McAllister. The smallest refund amount available is , and the largest refund amount is ,111, owed to Amerus Life Insurance Co.Every year, the Treasurer-Tax Collector attempts to reunite San Diegans with money they have overpaid on taxes or fees. In the past five years, the office has refunded nearly 0,000.Current state law says countywide money that is unclaimed for three years and property tax refunds that are unclaimed for four years must be turned over to the county's general fund. 1632

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The body of a 14-year-old boy was found near railroad tracks by a maintenance crew in the Bay Ho neighborhood, sheriff's officials said.At about 2:50 a.m. Saturday, the crew discovered someone who appeared to be struck by a train in the area of 6000 Santa Fe St., according to Lt. Thomas Seiver of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department homicide unit. After an investigation at the scene by the sheriff's Railroad Enforcement Team, the homicide unit took over the case, Seiver said. The boy has been identified and his next of kin notified, but his name is being withheld because it may jeopardize the investigation, the lieutenant said. The county Medical Examiner's Office will perform an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of the boy's death, Seiver said.Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the sheriff's homicide unit at 858-285-6330 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 929
