The .6 billion purchase left it with .3 billion in debt secured by its assets and it never really recovered.The toy store faced several other big challenges at about the same time. There was the rise of big box retailers like Walmart, which now dwarfs Toys "R" Us in total toy sales. Last year toymakers Mattel and Hasbro each sold about billion worth of their toys at Walmart, more than twice as much as what they sold through Toys "R" Us. (KGTV) - 10 people escaped a fire that destroyed a motor home and damaged a house in El Cajon Saturday.The flames broke out at 3:25 a.m. on Emerald Ave., Heartland Fire crews said.A motor home parked in the carport suffered the most damage but parts of the house were gutted.Two people inside the motor home and eight people in the house were not hurt.They declined help from the Red Cross.Heartland Fire investigators are looking into what caused the fire. 482

(KGTV) — Three U.S. citizens were arrested and 52 people were taken into custody in two smuggling attempts in the El Centro area early Friday.The first incident occurred just after 5 a.m., according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. A remote video surveillance system reported a stake bed truck and van suspected of smuggling near the border wall west of Mount Signal Road. Agents responded and stopped the truck as it traveled toward Highway 98, but the van continued on, CBP said.The driver of the truck, a 22-year-old U.S. citizen, admitted he was transporting individuals illegally in the rear cargo area of the truck. The truck was carrying 37 people, 36 adult Mexican nationals and one adult Guatemalan national, who were hiding under a black tarp in the truck bed, CBP said.RELATED: Leader of San Diego, Baja California maritime smuggling ring arrestedSoon afterward, the van that agents spotted earlier and followed was stopped. EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) - The El Cajon man who is accused of beating his roommate to death with a frying pan says he's not guilty. Brad Payton showed no expression as he was arraigned on Thursday afternoon in front of an El Cajon judge.An attorney spoke for Payton who entered the “not guilty” plea during the video-streamed initial court appearance since the attack, which happened exactly one week ago. Deputy DA Carlos Campbell told 10News that the crime comes with a sentencing of 26 years to life in prison.The attack happened before sunrise at an independent living facility on Naranca Avenue in El Cajon. Police say the two men were heard arguing before 25 year-old Payton allegedly grabbed a frying pan and beat the other man to death. 10News spoke to the victim's mother on the day he was attacked, before she knew he died. She said he suffered from a developmental disability and didn’t like to follow the rules, which was how he ended up at the living facility. His name has still not been released by the Medical Examiner’s Office. The county lists the property where the attack happened as a home to those with physical or mental disabilities.
