SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - 10 years ago, a Poway teen disappeared during a jog, and a collective sense of security was never the same. What followed were massive searches and an outpouring of support from the community. The investigation led to the arrest of the man who killed teenagers Chelsea King, 17, and Amber Dubois, 14. Carrie Cave's daughter Amber vanished in 2009 while walking to Escondido High. She planned to purchase a lamb that day and raise it as part of a school program. Her fate was revealed a year later after Poway High School senior Chelsea King went missing during a jog near Lake Hodges."I remember not being able to breathe. Your whole body is shaking," said Brent King, Chelsea's father.The evidence trail led to convicted sex offender John Gardner, who was ultimately convicted for a series of crimes, including the rape and murder of the two girls. Their bodies were recovered. After an emotional confrontation with Gardner in prison, Cave decided to forgive Gardner before he was sentenced."I got the answers about her last moments that I wanted ... I forgave him because I had another daughter to raise, and if I didn't, I wouldn't be able to live," said Cave.Cave started a search and rescue group. Her dog Amber discovered the remains of missing San Diego native and nursing student Michelle Le in the Bay Area in 2011."It was a lot to take in. I sat under a tree for two hours and cried," said Cave.That emotion is something the King family also knows well. The family channeled their grief and helped pass Chelsea's Law, a state law which enhanced sentences, parole terms and monitoring for violent sex offenders who commit crimes against children. To date, more than 2,500 offenders have been charged under Chelsea's Law."Because of Chelsea's Law, our children are safer, but that doesn't mean they're safe," said King.Besides advocating for laws, the King family's nonprofit Chelsea's Light Foundation has handed out over 0,000 in scholarships to local children. A run celebrating Chelsea's memory was held for eight years, before coming to an end.In 2014, Chelsea’s brother Tyler King directed a documentary he called “Chelsea’s Light: A Brother’s Journey.” "She is with us. I do good sometimes and then my emotions get all screwed up," said Cave.Cave says her she's still forging her daughter's legacy. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Coronado Police officer who was among the first to arrive at the Spreckels Mansion after the death of Rebecca Zahau testified Monday in the wrongful death civil case.Zahau’s death was ruled a suicide in 2011 but her family believes she was killed. They sued Adam Shacknai, the brother of Rebecca’s boyfriend.Adam Shacknai called 911 to report the body hanging from the balcony.TIMELINE: Rebecca Zahau?caseIn testimony Monday, the unidentified officer said his duty was to go through the home and make sure no one was still inside, deeming it safe for investigators to enter. Investigators would later find a single boot print on the balcony where Zahau’s nude body was found bound and hanging. The shoe print would end up being one key piece of evidence. Investigators needed to find out who it belonged to, and if someone else was with Zahau before her body was discovered.SLIDESHOW: Coronado death investigationThe Zahau family lawyer is trying to prove Adam Shacknai was with her and played a role in her death. Shacknai’s lawyers argue there is not a single piece of evidence that ties him to Zahau’s death.  His DNA was never found at the scene, and there were no eyewitness accounts to support the Zahau family’s claim, lawyers say. The officer on the witness stand was questioned about the shoe print by Keith Greer, Zahau’s family lawyer.“Do you know whether or not that footprint on the deck is yours?” Greer asked.“Personally I do not, but I’ve been told that it is,” replied the officer.He said as part of the investigation, his boots were taken in as evidence.Investigators later determined the print was accidentally left behind by the officer during his sweep of the home.The same officer who testified answered questions from Shacknai’s lawyers about a call he responded to at the home days before Zahau’s death.Zahau’s boyfriend’s son, Max Shacknai, had suffered a life-threatening fall inside of the home while in her care.“Once I entered the house I saw a small boy on the ground with some debris on him,” said the officer.He went on to say he remembers seeing Zahau very emotional and crying, but doesn’t remember directly speaking with her.A PERT counselor, a fingerprint expert and a handwriting expert are also expected to testify Monday. 2314

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A 17-year-old has been arrested for social media threats to a Carmel Valley high school.San Diego Police said the juvenile was taken into custody Monday at school during an investigation into threatening comments issued online against Canyon Crest Academy, which is part of the San Dieguito Union High School District.The teenager has been placed in Juvenile Hall for criminal threats, SDPD said.RELATED: Timeline shows threats made against San Diego County schoolsIn a letter to parents Monday, Principal Brett Killeen said no "credible nor specific threat was made."The students were concerned about what another student has been posting on social media.  Though no credible nor specific threat was made toward any specific student nor our school, these students did the right thing in reporting their concerns to us.  The San Diego Police Department is investigating this issue, and the student who posted the content is not on campus.We are proud that CCA is a safe school with an inclusive and caring culture.  We do encourage families to talk to teens about what they may be posting online, because threatening content will be taken seriously, even if posted in jest, and it ultimately disrupts the lives of those who are concerned about the content, as well as the person who used poor judgment in posting the content.  1383

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A 4.7 earthquake struck the Central California city of Gonzales Monday.The U.S. Geological Survey reported the quake at 11:31 a.m., 22 kilometers northeast of the city in Monterey County.The quake was 6.2 km deep. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A famous San Diego bike trail is open just in time for July 4. Wednesday, SANDAG opened a one-mile stretch of the newly-relocated and upgraded Rose Canyon Bike Path. The path is a segment of the Coastal Rail Trail that stretches along Interstate 5 from north Santa Fe Street to just north of State Route 52. SANDAG says the path will eventually connect to the future 44-mile Coastal Rail Trail, which will extend from Oceanside to Downtown San Diego. According to the agency, the Rose Canyon Bike Path is part of a Complete Corridor, running along the future Mid-Coast Trolley light rail line. 622
