The holiday season is here and small businesses, particularly restaurants, need all the help they can get. Many have had to close their doors a second time as coronavirus cases soar and more states implement more stringent shutdown measures.“We’ve got to do what we’ve got to do,” said Alejandro Landa, a server at his family’s diner in Denver.Last week, Landa’s family had to decrease its indoor dining capacity from 50 percent to zero as the state implemented its “code red” COVID-19 lockdown, which only allows for limited outdoor dining, while also allowing to-go and delivery orders. He says the family learned that tips on any take out orders are a big help. Most servers rely on them for most of their income.“This is all we have right now,” said Landa. “It’s a family restaurant. It’s just my mom, my two sisters, and my grandma at home. It’s all we have, and we really need to keep it up because there’s no other place to go.”Other restaurants suggest checking to see if gift cards are available. Purchasing one can give the establishment a quick influx of cash, while offering the guest a dining experience once things return to normal once more.“When our GM said we won’t be able to do dine-in for close to the rest of the year, we’re like that’s crazy talk, this is going to get better,” said Sierra Taruini, an assistant manager at an Italian Eatery. “It hasn’t gotten better. I’m a little biased but I think our food would make for a great gift.”Tarquini is one of four people on staff at diFranco’s. Typically, the bistro employs 8-10 people, but the initial and subsequent lockdowns have forced them to cut staff to barely stay profitable.Tarquini says food delivery services such as Uber Eats and Door Dash can give them additional revenue, but she suggests ordering the food from the restaurant’s website directly. Oftentimes, those carrier services charge the restaurants a small fee per order. Tarquini says by calling the restaurant directly, they can save a few additional dollars, and more menu options may be available.“The phone doesn’t stop and that has really helped me,” said Ron Robinson, owner of Gaetano’s, an upscale Italian restaurant.Robinson says he never tried takeout before COVID because his dishes are made fresh and transporting them with the same quality can be difficult. Ever since he adjusted as a way to stay in business, however, he says people have shown massive support as they order directly from him for date nights and other occasions.“I had a guy the other night come in and get eight martinis to go,” said Robinson. “You know, they buy bottles of wine to go, so every little bit helps.”Robinson says if a restaurant offers alcohol, ordering a craft cocktail to go is beneficial. He says it allows restaurants to use and order more alcohol, which can be difficult since many of their bars are closed. He also says it can create more ambiance for a special event. 2920
The Great Bambino, the King of Rock and Roll, and the former leader of "America's Team" are among those set to receive the highest honor that a president can bestow on a civilian. The White House announced Saturday that President Donald Trump will award the Presidential Medal of Freedom to seven people next week. The list, which names three posthumous recipients, includes sports and entertainment legends such as Babe Ruth and Elvis Presley as well as political and charitable luminaries such as philanthropist Miriam Adelson, Utah Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch and the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.Adelson, the wife of billionaire Republican donor Sheldon Adelson, is cited by the White House for founding research centers committed to fighting substance abuse and, with her husband, establishing the Adelson Medical Research Foundation, which supports research on life-threatening illness. She has also supported Jewish schools, Holocaust memorial organizations, and Israeli military personnel and veterans, the White House noted. The Adelsons were among the Republican Party's largest benefactors this midterm election, donating a whopping 2 million to GOP super PACs through September. The White House also lauded the accomplishments of Hatch, one of the longest-serving senators in US history, citing his four decades of legislative accomplishments and his leadership on judicial confirmations.Scalia, a conservative judicial icon, was cited by the White House for "insisting that the role of federal judges is to uphold the original meaning of the Constitution — never to impose their own beliefs on the country."The news release praised Presley as a musical icon who defined American culture to adoring fans around the world and "fused gospel, country, and rhythm and blues to create a sound all his own, selling more than a billion records." It also noted his two years of Army service.Ruth, meanwhile, is celebrated for setting baseball records that lasted for decades, creating the Babe Ruth Foundation, which sought to help underprivileged children, and for raising money for the war effort during World War II. "His legacy has never been eclipsed, and he remains the personification of 'America's Pastime,' the White House said. Two football Hall of Famers are also among the honorees: former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach, who also volunteered to fight in the Vietnam War and later became a businessman and champion of charitable causes such as the United Way; and defensive tackle Alan Page, who would later go on to become the first African American to serve on the Minnesota Supreme Court. The Medal of Freedom is awarded to those who have made "especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the country, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors," the White House said. This is the first time Trump is presenting the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He has awarded the Medal of Honor, the nation's highest military honor, as recently as October. 3061

The makers of the wildly popular video game Fortnite are facing a lawsuit from a rival company that claims the game violates intellectual property. The PUBG Corporation, the makers of PlayerUnkonwn's Battlegrounds, filed the lawsuit against Epic Games, claiming that Fortnite copied the "last-man standing" game concept.MORE:?Fortnite: What it is and why it is so popularAccording to the BBC, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds was first released in March 2017. Fortnite was first released a few months later in July, but didn't release its popular "Battle Royale" mode until September. Both Battlegrounds' and Fortnite's Battle Royale mode both host up to 100 players online at a single time. The object of both games is to eliminate all other players and be the last person standing, and both games take place on an island. According to The Verge, both games were also developed on Unreal Engine 4, a system developed by Epic Games. However, the games do have notable differences: Fortnite allows players to gather materials and build fortresses and barriers. While PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds has waned in popularity, Fortnite has exploded around the world. The number of people within the orbit of Vice President Mike Pence who have contracted COVID-19 in recent days has grown to five, according to CNN and The New York Times. Those five include Pence's chief of staff, Marc Short, an outside advisor, Marty Obst, and aide Zach Bauer. On Saturday, the Trump administration confirmed that Short had contracted COVID-19. In a statement released, the White House said that both Pence and the second lady both tested negative, and CNN reports that they tested negative on Sunday as well.On Saturday, the White House said that Pence would "maintain his schedule in accordance with the CDC guidelines for essential personnel."However, The New York Times reports that "several" White House officials privately believe that Pence should stay off the campaign trail due to the outbreak. CNN spoke with officials who said Pence staff members are "scared" of contracting the virus.Just hours after the White House confirmed Short's diagnosis, White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows said on CNN that the Trump administration wasn't "going to control the pandemic" and would instead focus on treatments and vaccines. The outbreak within Pence's office is just the latest rash of COVID-19 cases that have reached the inner circle of the White House. President Donald Trump himself was hospitalized after contracting the virus earlier this month, and both first lady Melania Trump and her son, Barron, have also caught the virus. Several other top White House officials, including press secretary Kayleigh McEnany, adviser Stephen Miller and White House counselor Hope Hicks have also contracted the virus. 1641
The Houston Rockets have traded Russell Westbrook to the Washington Wizards for John Wall and a future lottery-protected, first-round pick. Both teams announced the trade Wednesday night. The move ends Westbrook’s tenure in Houston after just one disappointing season. Westbrook was traded from Oklahoma City for Chris Paul and draft picks in July 2019.Westbrook's Rockets defeated Paul's Thunder in the first round of the NBA Playoffs during the summer, but lost to the Clippers in the next round, only winning one out of five games in the series. Westbrook is a nine-time NBA All Star, and was the league's MVP in 2017. Wall had a string of five straight All-Star appearances before injuries the last two seasons held him back. 738
