SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Santas are taking a big hit in 2020 for two big reasons: the pandemic and politics.During a typical December, Santas in San Diego would pop up at events, fundraisers, malls, parties and more. FORBS is the Fraternal Order of Real Bearded Santas, and the group meets and trains year-round to prepare the best Santas for the holiday season. This year, even these pros can’t find work.There are two big reasons for this. The first is one that is impacting most industries right now: the pandemic. Events and parties are canceled, and malls are hurting. At a mall, Santa usually would go through a line of kids, put them on his lap, and ask them what they want for Christmas this year. AB 5 was publicized as a bill that would help independent contractors like rideshare drivers, but it also impacts mall Santas. Mall Santas traditionally are hired as independent contractors through third-party bookers or employment agencies. Under Assembly Bill 5, authored by Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez (D-San Diego) and passed this year, those workers are reclassified as employees with insurance and other benefits.FORBS members fear companies won’t want to hire Santas as employees.“What’s that mean? It just means Santa is an employee instead of an independent contractor. Santas will be getting a paycheck with holdings taken out of it,” said one Santa.This means Santas who train year-round for this month have to adapt. Some are turning to virtual meet and greets to make ends meet.“Virtual is definitely for me the savior of the year,” said a Santa who recently got booked up with back-to-back virtual greetings. He said he usually makes about ,000 per holiday season, but will be lucky to break ,000 this year, even with the uptick in virtual bookings.Another Santa said he usually works at a mall, but that gig was canceled this year so he’s working as much as he can at Seaport Village, which does have in-person Santa photo opportunities. He said he usually makes around ,000 per season, but will be happy if he breaks ,000 this year. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - SDG&E says the company is ready to meet increased demand over the next few decades, as temperatures rise across California.According to a recent climatology study, the number of days in San Diego where the heat index will top 100 degrees is expected to jump to 4 per year by 2050. The study says it will be at 7 per year by 2100. By contrast, historically, San Diego has averaged less than one day per year above 100 degrees.That means more people will turn to air conditioners and fans to keep cool, creating more demand for energy throughout the year."This is one of our top priorities," says SDG&E Communications Director Denice Menard. "We know the summertime surge is coming."Menard says SDG&E engineers have run thousands of simulations to test the power grid. The company has also invested heavily in solar and wind turbine energy to increase supply.Menard also says the new 15-mile transmission line from Sycamore to Penasquitos will help deliver energy to areas that need it. And a new synchronous condenser in the North County will help manage surges in demand."There have been so many preparations and simulations done by our engineers," Menard says. "We’ve done everything we can to make sure we’re prepared and that San Diego is safe and can beat the heat."SDG&E is also looking to their customers for help. The company hopes their new Time of Use plans will encourage people to avoid energy use from 4-9 pm, when the temperatures are highest and more people are home. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego State University students were outraged with the football home opener tailgate at SDCCU Stadium Saturday.This comes after an email was sent last October by the university declaring new rules for tailgates. It reads "students and recognized student organizations with more than 25 people in attendance are required to register for tailgating.""People are bummed but I haven’t heard that many people upset about it," SDSU Freshman Caitlin said.The new form requires organizations to acknowledge kegs, glassware, and underage drinking is prohibited. They also check a box acknowledging failure to follow any of the guidelines could result in citation or arrest as well as loss of tailgating privileges and/or game tickets."I heard it was a little too crazy so they had to dial it back and now they’re making people register," Caitlin said."Last year there were thousands out here, this year there’s hundreds maybe," SDSU Senior Brady McIntyre said in frustration.Multiple students came up to 10News angry with the restrictions and how they stifle greek life.10News spoke with a representative with Student Life at SDSU who said the registration process was to bring more organization and give groups a safer place to hang out. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Since the start of the pandemic, there have been more than 240 community outbreaks in San Diego County. But despite calls from the public, county leaders continue to keep the exact locations secret.After public records requests from news outlets, the county released a list this week showing all the confirmed outbreaks until Sept. 1.The list reveals one outbreak at a San Diego business led to 175 infections. Another outbreak at a Chula Vista adult day care was linked to three deaths. But the addresses and business names are redacted.Many ABC 10News viewers have said they would like detailed information about the location of outbreaks to better inform decisions on where they visit.The county has resisted those calls, citing several reasons.The first reason has to do with contact tracing. County leaders say tracers often encounter people who are reluctant to provide information out of concern it will harm their business or organization.They say it’s useful tracers are able to assure people the business names will be kept confidential.“Contact tracing only works when those that are being interviewed are completely honest and forthcoming with relevant information,” the county wrote in a letter attached to the public records request.“Releasing the names of these locations and the addresses will have a chilling effect on the open communication necessary to ensure the Public Health Officer is able to effectively combat active outbreaks,” the county added.Los Angeles County does it differently. Health officials there post the names and addresses of all outbreak locations at workplaces, food, and retail stores.An outbreak is defined as three or more cases among members of different households who visited the same location within a 14-day period.San Diego County Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten said LA’s approach is unique.“LA does not have the capacity to do the contact tracing investigations the way that we do them,” she said in a press conference last month. “If you call any other health department in Southern California, no other health department does what LA does.”At times, San Diego County has identified the locations of outbreaks, including announcing in late July an outbreak at a fitness facility called The Gym in Pacific Beach.At the time, The Gym was defying public health orders, but has since gotten permission to reopen.San Diego County has also revealed locations of outbreaks from other diseases.In 2017, the county identified a Pacific Beach restaurant where there was a Hepatitis A outbreak. It regularly names schools with cases of tuberculosis.“We would release or have a press release related to an outbreak if there was additional information that the public would need to take actions,” Dr. Wooten said.County officials say they only reveal locations when they need help identifying people who may be exposed.In many cases, by the time an outbreak is confirmed, the county says the active threat is over.That’s because on average, the list reveals it takes 25 days to confirm the presence of three or more cases.“In most instances, the outbreak location information is reported and added to this list well after the outbreak has already taken place, so releasing the names now would do little to protect the public, especially when the business is cooperating with the Public Health Officer, exposed individuals have been notified, and measures have been taken to mitigate the risk of an additional outbreak,” the county said in its letter explaining the redactions in the public records request.Then there’s a privacy argument. County leaders say that in some cases revealing locations would make it easy to determine the people who had fallen ill.Finally, Dr. Wooten said she doesn’t want the public to get the impression that the virus is only contained in locations where outbreaks have occurred.When there's an outbreak of another disease, cases tend to be very localized. COVID-19 is different, she said.“The virus is widespread. People should not get false complacency,” said Dr. Wooten. 4079
