Two businesses decided to close their doors for a day in reaction to white supremacist Richard Spencer’s speech at Michigan State University. The Carpathia Club in Sterling Heights, Michigan said it got a call from Attorney Kyle Bristow. He wanted to book a meeting on Sunday at the club for about 100 people.  “It was a law firm having a meet and greet. I didn’t think anything negative about it,” said Carsten Grotioh of the Carpathian Club.  “Then Sterling Heights Police came in and asked to speak to management.  They told me they heard there was going to be a Neo-Nazi gathering here on Sunday.”Grotioh learned that Bristow had represented Spencer as a lawyer, and the meeting was supposed to include Spencer’s supporters. He didn’t just cancel the reservation. He closed his business for the day. The owner of the Tipsy McStagger Pub in Warren said he had a similar experience. He got a call from Bristow’s Foundation for the Market Place of Ideas. He was told the organization wanted to host a networking meeting on Monday. When someone came into his business and informed him the networking involved people who supported a white nationalist, he says he was disgusted. “I said absolutely not are they coming to our bar. I mean, we are a neighborhood bar. I have been in this community 50 years. I retired from the Warren Police Department. I have seen enough hate. Our bar is what it is. It is a neighborhood bar. Everyone is welcome,” said John Vostoris, the owner of Tipsy McStagger Pub. Vostoris also decided to close his business to avoid any gathering there by people who planned to attend the event. The Anti Defamation League says standing up to hate, while not infringing on free speech is exactly what everyone needs to do.“It is not something we want to see in our state,” said Heidi Budaj, the ADL’s Michigan Regional Director. She says the fear is hate speech leads to action.  Nationwide there was a 57% increase in anti-Semitic incidents from 2016 to 2017. In Michigan, there was a 13% increase overall. “We want our state to be known as a welcoming place that embraces diversity. A place where we stand up against hate,” said Budaj. Scripps station WXYZ in Detroit reached out to the leader of the Foundation for the Market Place and asked if they rescheduled their meeting. Bristow said he suddenly resigned from the group because of the media’s vilification of him and his message.  2520

Various sex toys, including a vibrator, were mistaken for a bomb, causing a partial closure at Berlin's Sch?nefeld Airport on Tuesday.Employees at the airport were conducting routine X-rays of luggage when they spotted "suspicious content in a luggage piece," according to the federal police in Berlin.Because it was unclear from the initial scan what the bag contained, an alert was issued shortly before 11 a.m., resulting in the closure of the airport's D terminal while police investigated the suspicious items.The owner of the bag was called over the airport speaker system and eventually talked to police about his luggage.However, he was reluctant to properly explain the contents of the bag -- possibly because of embarrassment, according to a federal police spokesperson -- saying instead that his luggage contained "technical stuff."After an hour-long investigation involving a bomb squad, authorities eventually determined that the items were sex toys.The airport's D terminal was reopened at noon.The incident came on the same day that Frankfurt Airport -- Germany's busiest airport -- was evacuated after a family that tested positive for explosives was mistakenly allowed to leave the security area.The security slip in Frankfurt affected over 7,000 passengers.Both incidents came during the one of the busiest months for travel in Europe, as many people are on vacation.In 2016, the latest year with available data, nearly a quarter of the 1.2 billion pleasure trips taken by Europeans occurred in July and August. 1537

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey knows the tech world has a problem. He's asking big questions like "How do we earn peoples' trust?""We realize that more and more people have fear of companies like ours," Dorsey said in an in-depth interview with CNN. He cited the "perceived power that companies like ours have over how they live and even think every single day."The following day, President Trump proved his point."Social Media is totally discriminating against Republican/Conservative voices. Speaking loudly and clearly for the Trump Administration, we won't let that happen," the president tweeted Saturday morning.Trump is tapping into a widely held belief on the right about biased tech companies. The claims have even become an issue on the campaign trail. "They are trying to silence us" is the new rallying cry.Companies like Facebook and Twitter say they understand the perception, but deny that their algorithms and employees discriminate against any particular political point of view."Are we doing something according to political ideology or viewpoints? We are not. Period," Dorsey said Friday. "We do not look at content with regards to political viewpoint or ideology. We look at behavior."But he knows some people do not believe him."I think we need to constantly show that we are not adding our own bias, which I fully admit is left, is more left-leaning," Dorsey said."We need to remove all bias from how we act and our policies and our enforcement and our tools," he added.In the interview, Dorsey kept coming back to the need for transparency, in much the same way that journalists talk about trying to explain news media processes to readers. It will change peoples' approach. I'm not na?ve enough to believe that it's going to change it for everyone, but it's worth a shot," he said.More importantly, he added, Twitter has to be "consistent with our enforcement.""We can't just keep changing" the rules "randomly, based on our viewpoints, because that just adds to the fear of companies like ours -- making these judgments, according to our own personal views of who we like and who we don't like -- and taking that out upon those people. Twitter has suspended far-right conspiracy theorist Alex Jones from its platform for one week.The news was first shared by an InfoWars personality, who tweeted a screenshot of Jones' Twitter account -- indicating the company limited some of Jones' account features temporarily.A Twitter spokesperson confirmed the authenticity of the screenshot. The spokesperson said the content which prompted Twitter to suspend Jones was a video published Tuesday in which he said, "now is time to act on the enemy before they do a false flag."On Friday, one day after a CNN investigation found that Jones' Twitter accounts appeared to have repeatedly violated the company's rules, Twitter said the accounts belonging to Jones and his fringe media organization InfoWars would remain online.At the time, a Twitter spokesperson said the company concluded that of the more than a dozen tweets included in CNN's Thursday report, seven were found to have violated Twitter's rules. Twitter would have required those tweets to be deleted, if they were to have remained up.But after CNN's investigation was published, the tweets cited in it were almost immediately deleted from the social media website. Jones said on his program that he had instructed his staff to do so and "take the super high road," though he contested whether the tweets violated any Twitter rules.Twitter is one of the only major social media companies that has not scrubbed its platform of Jones or InfoWars. Recently, Jones has seen the vast majority of the social media infrastructure for his media empire crumble. Apple has removed the full library of his podcasts, Facebook has unpublished his pages, YouTube terminated his account, and other technology companies took similar action.However, InfoWars apps remain available through the Google Play store and Apple's app store. 1850
