SAN DIGEO (KGTV) - The number of calls to San Diego County’s Child Abuse Hotline has dropped by more than half since schools across the region closed to prevent the spread of the coronavirus disease.County data provided to 10News shows a more than 50 percent decrease in calls regarding allegations of child abuse or neglect.According to the county, for the week of March 9 to 15, there were 1,859 calls. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A California state appeals court has thrown out the sole conviction against an immigrant who fatally shot a woman on the San Francisco waterfront in 2015.The 1st District Court of Appeal on Friday overturned a gun conviction against Jose Inez Garcia-Zarate because the judge failed to instruct the jury on one of his defenses.Garcia-Zarate was acquitted of murder in the killing of Kate Steinle, who was on a pier with her father when she was shot in the back in July 2015.The case of Garcia-Zarate, who was in the country illegally and had been deported five times, touched off a fierce immigration debate.He said he unwittingly picked up the gun wrapped in a T-shirt and it fired accidentally.Garcia-Zarate is in custody and facing federal gun charges. 783

San Diego (KGTV)- Hygiene continues to be a struggle for those living on the streets, especially during the pandemic. Non-profit Duwara Consciousness is helping the homeless gain access to a hot shower.The non-profit uses its food trailer to feed the homeless. On average, they provide about 1,500 meals per week."Our distribution network currently runs as far as San Ysidro and as far north as Carlsbad," says Harisimran Khalsa.But as we continue to experience the COVID-19 pandemic, Khalsa says access to a hot shower was limited for those in need. This prompted her and partner, Davinder Singh, to move forward with their idea of a shower trailer."Hygiene access is just not as frequent. So you do end up coming down with more bugs, more viruses," says Khalsa. "We think that this is really a time when we have to focus on hygiene for our homeless population."The shower trailer contains seven individual stalls, including one that is ADA compliant."It's really critical for our guests that they have a secure environment in which to shower."Khalsa says about 20 people can use the shower per hour. The stalls are cleaned after each use following CDC guidelines.The trailer comes equipped with sinks for people to wash their hands, shave or brush their teeth. It also has laundry services. The non-profit partners with other organizations to provide space and water.Duwara Consciousness plans to launch the shower trailer on Friday officially, but so far, they say users have been grateful for a simple hot shower. 1525

San Diego (KGTV)- It’s been one year since the deadly bluff collapse in Encinitas, killing three members of the same family. The husband and father of two of the women is still calling for changes along the beach.Dr. Pat Davis says this past year has been tough after losing wife Julie Davis, daughter Annie Clave and sister-in-law Elizabeth Charles.The family was out for a day at the beach last August when suddenly the bluff gave out.“It was important for me that this kind of accident never is able to happen to any other family,” says Davis.Davis says since the tragic accident, there has been little change at Grandview beach. “There’s very few new signs warning people about these cliffs.”Davis is calling on local and state leaders to stabilize the bluffs. He’s hoping a new bill will help. S.B. 1090 offers solutions like sand replenishment. It currently sits in the Senate.“We got over 4,000 signatures in one month of people supporting the bill.”In the meantime, Davis is thanking the community for its continued support. A park bench sits at the top of Grandview Beach, honoring his family members.“Not that there’s an easy side of learning to live with the loss and one of your children but, certainly family support and community support has been a great help in allowing my family to move forward.”Davis says community members also came together to place another memorial bench in their neighborhood. 1423

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- Today is the peak travel day for the Thanksgiving holiday. AAA expects more than 54 million Americans to travel more than 50 miles from home this season. While many are dreading the drive, others have chosen to take the rails.Gary Green was visiting his friend in San Diego for the last few days. But he is making the trip back to Los Angeles on the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner. "The car is a painful experience. The 405 is obnoxious. The 101 is obnoxious.
