SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — When the pandemic forced San Diego's breweries to close, many turned to canning in order to continue selling their brews.Virginia Morrison, CEO and co-founder of Second Chance Beer Company, told ABC 10News anchor Lindsey Pena canned beers is now the majority of their revenue."For us, that's really our only revenue stream now," Morrison said, adding that there was already a shift in popularity from glass to cans. "We've been putting out more cans since COVID than we've ever done before. We used to have maybe three or four releases, now I think at one point we had 14 cause that's all we can do. Every bit of beer we're making we're putting in cans."Now, the aluminum supply is having a hard time keeping up with demand. Morrison said a couple of weeks ago, the Brewers Association warned members of an aluminum can shortage.Morrison said the manufacturers her brewery works with are still able to fulfill orders, but she's unsure for how much longer."We need to know and plan and also work with them really closely to figure out how to minimally impact both our businesses," said Morrison.The Aluminum Association said in a statement, "The aluminum beverage can manufacturing industry has seen unprecedented demand for this environmentally-friendly container prior to and especially during the COVID-19 pandemic."But according to the Can Manufacturer's Institute, aluminum isn't in short supply, but can makers are struggling to keep up with the demand.To make matters worse for Second Chance and other local companies, they're competing for the same supply big beverage makers use. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two San Diego area residents are asking the area's top two prosecutors to investigate and prosecute Assemblymember Todd Gloria for alleged violations of the Political Reform Act. According to a letter sent to San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan and San Diego City Attorney Mara Elliot, Kathryn Burton and Mat Wahlstrom allege Gloria "repeatedly violated PRA section 85200 by soliciting and receiving multiple contributions to his Assembly 2020 Committee before filing a statement of intent to run for the Assembly in 2020." The letter says, "without filing that statement, the FPPC's manual makes clear, he could not lawfully receive any funds into his Assembly 2020 Committee." The letter goes on to read, "my clients have reason to believe that there is a conspiracy to launder campaign money from an illegal campaign committee controlled by Mr. Gloria to the San Diego County Democratic Party, to a candidate to replace Mr. Gloria in the Assembly, and to several sitting members of the Assembly." According to the California Secretary of State's website, before raising any campaign funds, state candidates file "Statements of Intention" to run for a specific office. Candidates can file Statements of Intention for more than one office. Team 10 obtained Gloria's signed statement of intention, which shows the state received it on August 13, 2019. That's after the campaign committee was opened and filed a Recipient Committee Campaign Statement. Officials with the California Fair Political Practices Commission tell 10News the Assemblymember called FPPC Enforcement earlier this week and self-reported. Enforcement is determining the appropriate action moving forward. Team 10 reached out to Gloria's campaign, but as of this writing has not heard back.In a Tweet sent Wednesday Gloria wrote, "Some news reports have suggested that I am seeking re-election to the Assembly. I want to be very clear: I am not running for the Assembly, I am running for Mayor. My Assembly committee remains open to fulfill my responsibilities as a Member of the State Assembly until the end of my current term. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Wearing masks and social distancing, churchgoers in Mira Mesa gathered outside of the Good Shepherd Parish Wednesday for a special Veterans Day mass.Under San Diego County's latest move into the purple tier, outdoor mass will be the new normal for the church until we move back into a less restrictive tier.“We want to protect the people,” said Father Michael Pham, a pastor at the Catholic church. “Health is important.”He said since reopening, the church has offered services inside at a limited capacity, outside and online. By Saturday, indoor operations will cease due to the county falling back into the purple tier.“We want to comply with the state and health department,” said Pham. “It’s a challenge, but people seem to adapt very well.”While Pham plans to comply, some others are pushing back.Skyline Church posted a lengthy statement to its website, reacting to news of the purple tier. Part of the message said, “Regardless of what tier the governor assigns to San Diego County, our Board, Trustees, and staff all agree that it is necessary to remain open for the overall health and well-being of our communities.”We saw this happen during the last round of closures. Some churches kept their doors open, saying shutting them any longer would lead to severe problems for people, including mental health issues.The county’s public health officer sent cease and desist letters to a few, but some continued to fight back, arguing that religious services are essential.“Fighting for our religious freedoms and pushing back against government overreach is not only worth the cost, it’s essential,” said the pastors of Awaken Church in a video posted to the church’s website months ago during another closure.Pham said his main goal is to protect his congregants and only reopen once allowed.“We try to do the best we can,” he said. “People are really conscientious about what they need to do, that’s important, that’s the reality that we live in right now.” 1991
