(KGTV) — California has already received more than 1.5 million vote-by-mail ballots back with just under three weeks left until the 2020 election. At least 1,511,522 mail-in ballots have been recorded by the state, according to the California Secretary of State office. At this point ahead of the 2016 election, the state had received only 150,000 mail-in ballots.During the 2016 election, a total of 8,443,594 mail-in ballots were recorded, according to the state.RELATED: A step-by-step guide to voting by mail or in person in San Diego CountyThis year, election officials are preparing for an avalanche of ballots to travel through the postal system. California sent a mail-in ballot to every active, registered voter due to the coronavirus pandemic, totaling more than 21 million ballots. In San Diego County, as of Sept. 4, there were about 1,869,527 active, registered voters.Voters can still cast their ballot in person or drop off their ballot at an official. An official search to find the closest polling or drop off location to you is available online.New this year, voters across the state can also track their ballot online and find out when it was mailed, received, and counted.According to the San Diego Registrar of Voters' Michael Vu, voters are encouraged to return their ballots with plenty of time to make sure they are counted. Vu says voters should, "clearly mark that ballot, similar to when you’re going to a polling place with an ink pen. Black or blue is preferred."Vu says missing or mismatched signatures, meaning the signature on the ballot doesn’t match the one on file, are one of the most common reasons ballots get disqualified. The number one reason, however, is that ballots are sent back too late. Ballots must be postmarked on or before Election Day, Nov. 3, Vu says. 1810

(KGTV) — A recent study may cause pause at the dinner table this holiday season for millions of Americans. The study by the New England Journal of Medicine claims that nearly one in two adults (49 percent) will be obese by 2030, with obesity rates being at least 35 percent in every state and higher than 50 percent in 29 states. Nearly one in four adults are projected to have severe obesity by 2030. "Severe obesity" is projected to be the most common body-mass index (BMI) category among women, black adults, and low-income adults nationally, the study added.RELATED: Carlsbad company invents weight loss balloon"Our analysis indicates that the prevalence of adult obesity and severe obesity will continue to increase nationwide, with large disparities across states and demographic subgroups," the study said. Most previous obesity estimates have relied on surveys in which respondents often understate their weight. The new report used decades-long federal study to get a more accurate picture of the growing epidemic. The study says BMI data from more than 6.2 million adults collected from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System Survey in 1993-1994 and 1999-2016 was used and measured with data from 57,000 adults who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. RELATED: High obesity rates reported among San Diego kidsBMI is measured using a person's weight in kilograms divided by the squared height in meters, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC adds that obesity affected about 93.3 million Americans between 2015-2016, and can lead to heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer that are some of the leading causes of preventable, premature death. An independent expert told the Associated Press that the trends are alarming and say the nation could face medical and financial problems due to the large number of those considered obese. The Associated Press contributed to this report. 1990

(KGTV) — California is now allowing breweries, bars, wineries, and distilleries to sell drinks to-go if they partner with a meal provider to provide food as well. The state's Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) announced the change Friday, allowing locations that do not have their own kitchen to reopen for business in some fashion. The change comes after several requests to expand to-go sales to breweries, bars, wineries, and distilleries that do not have kitchens, according to ABC. In March, the agency allowed those locations with kitchens to sell drinks to-go with food.RELATED:Pacific Beach's El Prez shut down for violating health ordersWhat to know: Changes at beaches, restaurants this Memorial Day weekendABC says the change will help more than 50,000 small and large businesses affected by economic challenges amid the coronavirus pandemic."We know businesses have suffered as they continue fighting to slow the spread of COVID-19," said ABC Director Jacob Appelsmith. "We have heard directly from these businesses that the notices of regulatory relief can give them a boost and help bring more people back to work."On May 15, the ABC issued another change that will allow these businesses to use parking lots, patios, and sidewalks to spread out dine-in customers. The agency says it is also now allowing virtual wine tasting, free alcohol delivery, extended delivery hours, alcohol transactions through pass-out windows or trays, and distilleries to make hand sanitizer approved by the FDA. 1523
