SAN FRANCISCO, July 15 (Xinhua) -- U.S. microblogging platform Twitter on Friday marked its fifth anniversary since public debut."Twitter, then called Twttr, opened to the public five years ago today," the company said in a Tweet, a short message within 140 characters users are allowed to communicate on the website."Twttr is a new mobile service that helps groups of friends bounce random thoughts around with SMS," co-founder Biz Stone described the service in a blog post on July 13, 2006, two days before its public debut."There were 224 Tweets sent on July 15, 2006. Today, users send that many Tweets in less than a tenth of a second," said the San Francisco-based company.Twitter said more than 600,000 new users signed up on Thursday while it took it more than 16 months to reach the first 600,000 Twitter accounts.The tipping point for the service's popularity was the 2007 South by Southwest festival, a set of film, interactive and music festivals and conferences that take place every March in Austin, Texas. TAIYUAN, May 29 (Xinhua) -- Parents of children with cerebral palsy are going to have a place to turn for help, as the first public foundation to provide aid has been set up in northern Shanxi Province.The Brain Rehabilitation Fund was established on Saturday by the China Population Welfare Foundation (CPWF), which is headquartered in Beijing. The CPWF will cooperate with the Shanxi Cerebral Palsy Hospital, which specializes in curing the brain disease with therapies such as acupuncture and massage.Lan Ye, the deputy secretary general of the CPWF, said the fund aims to relieve the burden of affected families by providing financial assistance and training so parents are able to do the therapy at home. In addition, the fund hopes to reduce the incidence of cerebral palsy by publicizing preventative measures to thwart the disease.More than 6 million suffer from cerebral palsy in China, and among them more than 2 million are children, said Guo Xinzhi, vice president of the Shanxi's Federation of the Disabled."A family needs to spend more than 500,000 yuan (77,000 U.S. dollars) to cure a child with the disease," Guo said. "As 70 percent of the children with cerebral palsy are from poor, mountainous areas, more than 25.7 percent of families cannot afford to pay the medical expenses."On Saturday, 25 parents from Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Fujian, Henan and Shanxi provinces came to the hospital for free training on helping their children to recover at home.

SAN FRANCISCO, June 22 (Xinhua) -- Apple Inc. plans to introduce a new iPhone in September featuring faster chip and more advanced camera, U.S. media reported on Wednesday.The new iPhone model, which will closely resemble iPhone 4, will include the A5 processor, a more powerful chip that Apple added to the iPad 2 tablet computer earlier this year, along with an 8-megapixel camera, up from the 5-megapixel model in the iPhone 4, Bloomberg quoted two people familiar with the product as saying.The device will run the iOS 5 operating system Apple previewed at its annual developer conference earlier this month.Aiming at attracting customers in developing countries, Apple is also working to finish a cheaper version of the iPhone which will use chips and displays of similar quality to the current iPhone 4, said the sources.Meanwhile, it was reported that Apple is also testing a new version of the iPad with a higher resolution screen, which, similar to the one currently used on iPhone 4, will be about one- third higher than iPad 2 and feature a more responsive touchscreen.According to a recent projection on smartphone market by the International Data Corp. MOSCOW, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- A Russian Soyuz space capsule carrying three astronauts returned to the Earth Friday, the Mission Control Center outside Moscow confirmed.The three astronauts, two Russians and one American from the International Space Station (ISS), who were flown back by a Soyuz TMA-21 spacecraft, were in good condition, search and rescue teams on the ground in Kazakhstan said.Russian TV images showed the three ISS crew members being taken out of the space capsule and seated in armchairs with blankets to re-adapt to the Earth's gravity.According to the Cosmonaut Training Center, the astronauts underwent physical examinations immediately after the landing, which included examinations of hearts, lungs and adrenal glands.Seventeen helicopters and planes had waited for the capsule's landing.Helicopters will carry the astronauts from the landing site to the Kazakh city of Karaganda, from where the two Russian cosmonauts Alexander Samokutyayev and Andrei Borisenko will fly back to Moscow later Friday, while NASA astronaut Ronald Garan will leave directly for the United States for post-mission rehabilitation, the Itar-Tass news agency reported.The return of the three crew members was originally scheduled for Sept. 8, but was postponed by a failed launch of the Progress cargo ship on Aug. 24.The three crew members remaining on board the ISS are scheduled to return in mid-November.
