If you lived in the western half of the United States, it might not have been obvious, but the month marked one of the warmest February months on record globally.According to data released by NOAA on Monday, last month marked the fifth-warmest February globally since record keeping began in 1880. While western North America had a comparably cooler February, the eastern US, Europe, South America, Asia and Oceania all recorded above average temperatures. Last month's global temperature was nearly 2 degrees above the average 20th century average. NOAA also reported retreating ice levels in both the Arctic and Antarctic Arctic sea ice was 5.9 percent less than the 1981-2010 average. Antarctic sea ice decreased by 13.4 percent compared to 1981-2010 averages. While the debate among non-scientists continues on climate change, the NOAA data shows that globally, the Earth is still in a warming pattern, and sea ice is decreasing. And despite record-breaking cold in the Eastern US in late January, the December-February averages for the region have been slightly above average. 1094

Illinois authorities say the more than 2,200 fetal remains found at the Illinois home of an abortion doctor who died this month were from abortions conducted between 2000 and 2002.At a news conference Thursday, Will County officials said it appears that all the abortions were conducted in Indiana at a time when Dr. Ulrich Klopfer was working in that state. They said that the fetal remains will be sent to Indiana, where authorities there are investigating.State's Attorney James Glasgow says Will County authorities will cooperate with Indiana investigators but it appears that the only laws that Klopfer may have violated were on disposal of fetal remains and failing to do required paperwork.Officials declined to say how they know the abortions were performed in those years.Meanwhile, Kevin Bolger, an attorney representing the widow of Klopfer, said his client was unaware of the existence of the remains until after Klopfer died. 950

John Pregulman is on a mission to ensure that those who survived the Holocaust are not forgotten. Pregulman is occupied with documenting the estimated 200,000 still-living Holocaust survivors. “Their biggest fear is that they’ll be forgotten,” Pregulman said as he was surrounded by hundreds of portraits he took of survivors taped and pinned onto four walls.Among those Pregulman has documented was Mildred Ferro, 93, who said she was age 11 when she moved to the United States. Pregulman recently visited a senior living community to capture Ferro’s picture and story.Pregulman’s became motivated when he learned that many survivors worry that their story will be forgotten in history. What started as a one-time gig, taking photos at an event outside of Chicago five years ago, has turned into almost an obsession.“I took their pictures, they shared their stores, and I just became completely enthralled with these amazing people who I expected to be sad and unable to get past what had happened, and yet they were the happiest most positive and accomplished people I had met in a very long time,” he said.In hearing their stories, Pregulman and his wife soon learned a disturbing statistic: roughly one-in-three Holocaust survivors live in poverty.“Dignity had to be the centerpiece of everything,” his wife Amy Israel Pregulman said. “They deserve that.”They’ve started a non-profit called 1407
