SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Months after one of San Diego’s biggest employers was said to be looking to add up to 1,000 jobs, General Dynamics NASSCO instead announced layoffs.In April, NASSCO held a job fair, claiming the company was looking to add up to 1,000 jobs. Robert Godinez, head of the Boilermakers Union Local 1998, says the shipbuilder didn’t hire close to that number.In total, NASSCO notified nearly 1,500 workers that they could be out of a job in September. The shipbuilder told 10News it expects to let go of closer to 350 workers.The layoffs are in relation to a dry dock accident in July that damaged facilities.One of the company’s employees, Glicerio Cortez, says he doesn’t know exactly what happened in July, but he heard of the damage through coworkers. “They say that they heard like a, something like a bomb, something strong and then the water came all the way to the dry dock,” said Cortez.RELATED: NASSCO delivers layoff notices to 1,500 workersVideo captured by Sky10 shows water flooding the dry dock as debris filled the area. Luckily, no one was injured.The July incident isn’t the only reason for the layoffs. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - On Tuesday, San Diego beach parking lots, piers, and boardwalks reopened following their closures amid the pandemic. The reopening came in time for the heat wave.10News witnessed beachgoers from Pacific Beach to South Mission Beach who took advantage of the lifted restrictions.A heat advisory was in effect until 7 p.m. on Tuesday. Coastal highs were in the 80s and 90s."It was a lot of fun since we can’t get out that much," said Ashyton Malan who visited the beach on Tuesday with his family. Mother Jennifer Malan added, "People are far apart and not a lot of masks but there was nobody encroaching on anybody’s space so it was nice."The City reports that visitors are still required to practice social distancing with anyone outside of their household and they cannot congregate or participate in active sporting activities on the beaches. 871

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – On Friday, the president of San Diego's Christian Youth Theater (CYT) held a press conference addressing this week's claims by several former students that they experienced sexual misconduct or sexual abuse by former teachers.CYT President Janie Russell Cox said the San Diego branch will remain dark until further notice as they investigate these abuse claims. “We are fully committed to the safety of every single child and we are grieving for every single individual whom we love and we care so deeply for. We apologize. [We] love you,” Cox added.The El Cajon-based program was founded 40 years ago and is for students ranging from 4 years old to 18 years old. CYT claims to be the largest youth theater group in the country with branches nationwide.Artist Brian Justin Crum, who went on to become a finalist on America's Got Talent, told ABC10 News on Friday that when he was 13 years old, his former CYT teacher invited him to a gay pride event. “I remember him questioning my sexuality and saying basically, like, you should come to this thing and see what you think and see how you feel when you're there and we can go together. I'll take you,” Crum said. “It was creepy. It felt inappropriate.”Crum said he was not assaulted but boundaries were crossed. “There was definitely a culture there where the teachers and the students were too close,” he added.On Tuesday, attorney Jessica Pride told ABC10 News that she's representing a former student who claims to have been sexually abused and several other former students have been contacting the law firm. “I think over the next couple of weeks as things unfold, you're going to see that this was just rampant at CYT and that they didn't do anything to protect these children,” said Pride.When asked Friday about whether staff ignored complaints from former students against former teachers, Cox replied, “I can't answer that. I don't have enough knowledge to know what decisions were made at that time and that's part of our investigation to find out.”Cox told reporters that CYT is starting a diversity committee and looking at doing restructuring to diminish favoritism, nepotism, and discrimination. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — More San Diego college students will be moving back to campus this weekend, as San Diego State grapples with trying to reduce its cases more than three weeks after its fall semester began.When SDSU started moving students back onto campus at the end of August, COVID-19 testing wasn't mandatory. Since Aug. 24, SDSU's cases on and off campus have climbed to 721 confirmed cases and 28 probable cases as of Wednesday.SDSU is now requiring testing for any students living on campus.RELATED: Petition calls for SDSU tuition and campus fee partial refundOther local universities are planning to require testing as well.Dr. Robert Schooley with UC San Diego says students will begin a staggered move-in process starting this weekend."We have appointments for all of them to arrive at a certain time they'll be tested as they arrive before they move into the dorm," Schooley told ABC 10News anchor Lindsey Pena.UCSD is expecting several thousands of students to move back to campus this fall.
