SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego churches have an idea to help solve the housing crisis. They want to build affordable housing on their unused land.UPLIFT San Diego is leading the effort, called YIGBY (Yes in God's Back Yard)."There are 1,100 churches in San Diego County with over 3,000 acres of property," says UPLIFT leader Tom Theisen. "If just 10% of those churches, 100 churches, were to build 20-30 units each, we're talking thousands of units of housing."Theisen used to serve as the Board President of the San Diego Task Force on the Homeless. He's now spearheading the YIGBY effort for UPLIFT."I can't tell you how many faith communities have called me and asked what they can do to help," he says. "I have a hard time telling them to hand out blankets and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. They want to do something that makes a difference, and housing makes a difference."Theisen says he already has 12 churches that want to build housing.One church that is already working to make the idea a reality is Clairemont Lutheran Church. They have a plan to build as many as 21 units on land that is currently part of their parking lot."Using our parking lot for something other than empty weeds growing seems like a good idea," says Pastor Jonathan Doolittle."We want something that works in the scale of our neighborhood, so our neighbors don't notice a huge change," he says. "But, we want it to be large enough to make a difference in the lives of those who need a place to live."Doolittle shared preliminary floor plans and renderings of the apartments. He says the church has been trying to get the project going for four years, but red tape keeps holding it up.One problem is changing zoning rules on the land. The other is parking regulations with the city.The plan would take 20 spots out of the parking lot. City law requires a certain number of parking spaces per church based on pew capacity. Without those 20 spots, the church would be under the legal requirement.Doolittle says his church only reaches capacity on major holidays. The rest of the year, those spots sit empty. He also pointed out that the church is on a transit corridor, and new city laws saw affordable housing is not required to have parking along transit corridors.UPLIFT has already met with Mayor Kevin Faulconer to discuss ways to ease those requirements on churches and other faith-based organizations that want to build affordable housing units. Theisen says churches would be more sensitive to concerns within the neighborhood than a private developer."These projects are self-sufficient," he says. "We can do as many of them as we have willing churches to work with us."UPLIFT hopes that a successful start to the YIGBY project will spur similar development. He thinks unused land owned by non-profit groups, health centers and even the City of San Diego could also be used for housing. 2888

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Ross Rock, or as locals prefer "The Rock," has had its share of headgear.The lone rock just off the coast from Sunset Cliffs Boulevard has been the target of vandals in the past and has again been crowned, this time by a mermaid.It's not clear how the mermaid was installed on top of the rock. A peace sign, the numbers "2010" — local graduates, perhaps? — a Christmas tree, a tiki head, and at one point, a toilet with a Raiders fan wedged inside have all been found taking refuge from the waves below.It remains unclear who makes the objects or how they have installed them in the past.Time and again, however, Mother Nature or possibly another vandal has removed what's been placed. 1359

And with the help of places like, Kitchen's For Food, the non-profit is working to provide healthy food for those San Diegans in need."Half a million San Diegans are food insecure, and these are individuals that don't know where healthy food comes from," says Food System Alliance Executive Director Elly Brown Food System Alliance works with their network group, to get donated and surplus healthy food into the hands of those in need. At the same time, their goal is to look at the issues across the entire food system, and find solutions. "When I'm talking about a food system, I'm talking about the chain of events that take food from seed, all the way to your plate. From the farming and fishing in our community, to the way food is distributed, all the way to the issues of waste. We are a powerful network of over 150 organizations, from diverse sectors that are coming together around this mission."However, the current pandemic has disrupted the food distribution chain, while at the same time, the need for food has increased."Food insecurity has risen, and there are tremendous hardships for food workers and food businesses in our community. Additionally, the farmers and fisherman in our community, as they try hard to adapt to the changing market demands."So in order to deal with future pandemics or disasters, San Diego Food System Alliance is looking at building a system that is more long lasting and innovative."This is part of the reason we are developing 2030. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego police officials have announced the arrest of two suspects in the murder of a security guard who was gunned down outside of an East Village homeless shelter last month.In a release sent Tuesday night, San Diego Police Department Acting Capt. Martha Sainz said homicide investigators were led to two suspects in the case through witness accounts and collected video footage from the area including from Smart Streetlights.The high-quality images obtained from the Smart Streetlights allowed investigators to identify 47-year-old Floyd Garrett and 40-year-old Johnny Hill as the suspects, according to Sainz."On January 4, 2020, investigators tracked Garrett to Phoenix, Arizona where he was arrested with the assistance of the Phoenix Police Department. Garrett will remain in custody in Phoenix, pending extradition hearings," said Sainz.Hill was located in San Diego and arrested by San Diego Police officers Tuesday without incident. He was booked into county jail for the murder.Both men are from San Diego, according to Sainz.Ernest Lee Buchanan, 44, was killed on Dec. 28 outside the Alpha Project shelter on Imperial Avenue. Buchanan was returning from taking a meal break when someone approached him and opened fire. Buchanan was taken to the hospital but died from his injuries a short time later. 1344

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego is bringing back its Portable Pool program to help teach children water safety skills. The program will officially open at City Heights Recreation Center starting June 17. While pools are installed, the city will provide free, week-long water safety skills classed for children ages 3 through 15. According to the city, the classes can accommodate as many as 100 children per week with six to 10 children in each class. “Drowning is one of the leading causes of death in children ages one to 14 and is the leading cause of accidental injury death for children ages one to four years old,” said Nicole McNeil, Supervising Recreation Specialist for the City’s Aquatics Program. “The City is offering these important free classes to help young children learn basic swimming skills to keep them safe around pools and prevent unnecessary drowning tragedies.”An additional portable pool will be installed at the Robert Egger Sr./South Bay Recreation Center starting July 1. The portable pools will be in place for three weeks before being moved to facilities in Paradise Hills, Linda Vista and Ocean Beach recreational centers. Registration for Portable Pools is on a first-come, first-served basis. To enroll, parents must fill out an ActiveNet form and return it to the recreation center where the portable pool is located. The program was created in 1968 and provides water safety training to children who don’t live near the city’s 13 municipal pools.
