NANCHANG, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese commerce official on Sunday called on foreign investors to maintain their confidence in the country, promising China would make continuous efforts to improve its investment environment.Qian Fangli, deputy director of the Department of Foreign Investment Administration under the Ministry of Commerce (MOC), made the statement at a forum during the Expo Central China 2010 that opened Sunday.Although operation costs in China were rising because of higher labor and raw materials costs, foreign investment continued growing rapidly " because improvements in China's investment environment helped lower their investment costs and boost confidence," Qian said.Further, she noted that the Chinese government would continue to improve policies to encourage foreign investors. But she did not provide further details.In the first eight months of this year, foreign direct investment in China totaled 65.96 billion U.S. dollars, up 18.06 percent from one year earlier, according to MOC statistics.The Expo Central China, scheduled to run from Sept. 26 to Sept. 28, invited economists, entrepreneurs and officials to attend. The expo seeks to promote development in central China, which spans six provinces -- Shanxi, Anhui, Jiangxi, Henan, Hubei and Hunan.

BEIJING, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- A public supervision scheme for China's prosecutors will be rolled out nationwide next month, a senior Communist Party of China (CPC) leader said Tuesday.A pilot public supervisor scheme, which started six years ago, had proved effective in supervising judicial departments, said Zhou Yongkang, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, at a meeting in Beijing.From next month, the measure would be formally adopted nationwide, he said.More work should be done to improve the selection and management of public supervisors and to draft regulations, he said.Government departments, non-governmental organizations, state-owned enterprises and communities could nominate members of the public as supervisors to the procuratorates.The public supervisors would give opinions to procuratorates when prosecutors decided to drop corruption charges, or when a suspect in the corruption case complained about the arrest.They could also oversee the actions of prosecutors, to prevent illegal detentions, obtaining confessions through violence and torture, and illegal collection of evidence.A report by the Supreme People's Procuratorate to the National People's Congress in March 2008 said about 86 percent of procuratorates had taken part in the trial.At the meeting, Zhou admitted that the country still faced a tough task in judicial reform.The government would work out new policies to attract more prosecutors and judges to work in local judicial departments, he said.

JERUSALEM, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Middle East envoy Wu Sike on Wednesday met with Israeli Deputy Prime Minister Dan Meridor in Jerusalem. They discussed Sino-Israeli relations and the current status of the Middle East peace process.China has consistently advocated that all concerned parties settle their differences through negotiations, and achieve comprehensive peace in this region, said Wu. The direct talks between Israel and the Palestinians, which started early September, is an important opportunity in the peace process, and has firm support from China, he added.Wu said that China is deeply concerned about the present stalemate in the talks. Chinese government calls for efforts from all parties to show flexibility and compromise on various issues, including settlement construction, so as to put the negotiation back on track, reach a final-status agreement, and realize peaceful coexistence between Israel and the Palestinians, he said.Meridor speaks highly of the active role China has played in promoting the Middle East peace process. Israel is now working to achieve the two-state solution, he said, adding that his government is willing to coordinate with other parties and find a solution to break the deadlock in direct talks.Israel is the second leg of Wu's Middle East tour, which will take him also to Palestinian territories, Egypt and Turkey.Israel and the Palestinians resumed direct negotiations on September 2 in the United States. However, the talks were halted when Israeli settlers restarted building in the West Bank after Sept. 26, when a 10-month settlement freeze ended. The Palestinian National Authority has made clear that it will enter the parley only if Israeli government extends the moratorium.

BEIJING, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao held talks last Friday with top leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) Kim Jong Il in Changchun, capital city of northeast China' s Jilin Province.Kim, general secretary of the Worker' s Party of Korea (WPK) and chairman of the DPRK National Defense Commission, paid an unofficial visit to China from August 26 to 30 at the invitation of Hu, also general secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC).Hu said that at present, China and the DPRK are increasing vigorous exchange and cooperation in various fields, among various departments and between provinces along the borders. The two sides have maintained close communication and coordination on issues of the Korean Peninsula and the region.Hu said China is ready to work with the DPRK to carefully safeguard and develop friendly and cooperative relations between the two countries.During the talks, Hu put forward three proposals for further strengthening relations between the CPC and the WPK and between the two countries.Firstly, the two sides should maintain high-level contact, which is of great significance to continuously pushing forward the development of the China-DPRK links. Leaders of the two sides should continue to maintain regular communication in various forms.Secondly, the two sides should advance trade and economic cooperation. BEIJING, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- The Consumer Price Index (CPI), the main gauge of inflation in China, is likely to rise 4.1 percent in October after accelerating to a 23-month high of 3.6 percent in September, the Bank of Communications forecast on Wednesday.The bank, China's fifth largest lender, said in a report that the index would see moderate dips in the coming two months amid decreasing demand due to the slowing economy.But oversupply of liquidity at home, surging food prices, rising labor costs, and pressures caused by imported inflation would mean very limited room for the index to drop, the report said.The report predicts China's CPI would rise 3.1 percent for the entire year of 2010, topping the government's target to keep the inflation rate under 3 percent.It also forecast food prices would rise further during the first half of 2011.Food prices, which account for one-third of weighting in calculating the CPI in China, climbed 8 percent in September, pushing the CPI to the highest level in nearly two years. Food prices had risen 7.5 percent in August, 6.8 percent in July, and 5.7 percent in June.
