CINCINNATI -- Police officers trying to arrest a man ended up fatally shooting him and wounding one of their own after the man struggled and drew a realistic pellet gun.Police were serving a robbery warrant for 20-year-old James Clay in an apartment in Cincinnati at about 3:40 p.m. Friday, according to Police Chief Eliot Isaac.The officers knocked, but there was no response. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A survey of Chula Vista residents and businesses show the economic toll the pandemic has taken on the city.The results of the July survey were recently released. It polled 576 businesses and nearly 800 residents.It showed nearly all businesses have seen a decline in revenue during the pandemic. As of the end of July, only half of businesses surveyed were fully open. About half of the businesses in the report also decrease their workforce. It also said 60 percent of unemployment in the city is due to COVID-19 and many have struggled to find new job opportunities.60 percent of businesses surveyed said given current projections, they anticipate closing within six months.Alita Fernandez is the director of Play City in Eastlake, an indoor playground for children. She said her workplace has been closed since March.“On the business side, it’s been very tough, but also on the personal side,” Fernandez said.She is not surprised by the grim numbers reported in the survey.“There are expenses that need to be covered… money comes in, the same thing goes out,” Fernandez said. Except now, there is no money coming in for many businesses.Fernandez and 15 other employees have lost their jobs until the planned reopening in January 2021. (KGTV) - The family of the man found in a barrel in San Diego Bay, near Chula Vista, is working toward closure two years after he disappeared.Omar Medina’s body was found Oct. 12, 2017, after a diver found a white, 55-gallon drum floating in the bay. She's the oldest of three and stepped in as an extra parent growing up, as they didn't have a father."This is the thing I cared about most growing up, he [Omar] was like a child to me," Villegas said.Thinking about her 28-year-old brother, she dreams of what could have been, "going to his wedding. I miss not meeting my nieces and nephews, I miss not having cousins for my kids." She spoke publicly for the first time this year at Chula Vista Police's Evening with Heroes fundraiser."Once they came in I felt a weight lifted off my shoulder[s] and that's what they've meant to me, they have definitely been that strength I'm not," she said police showed her family kindness and empathy."[Detectives] who put their photo on their desk and said they're out there. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Pastor Art Hodges stood on the steps of Chula Vista City Hall Wednesday, surrounded by about 50 people of faith. "Hear our prayer. Forgive our sin," Hodges said during the group prayer.The people were rallying against a program that calls for drag queens to read to children. Drag Queen Story Hour is scheduled to start Tuesday at the Chula Vista Civic Center Library. At the rally, those opposing the program said it would harm a child's growth and development. They also demanded public hearings."If there are parents that want drag queens to come read books to their children, they have that right. They're the parents, we're not protesting their right," said Hodges. "But they should do that privately, on their own time, in their own place, on their own dollar."Supporters say the program promotes tolerance and acceptance. Chula Vista Mayor Mary Salas called it "preposterous" to have a City Council vote for a one-hour reading program, which she said would not be canceled. "The City of Chula Vista is proud to celebrate the diversity of our community in all of our programs," Salas said in a statement. "The purpose of this event is to encourage children to use their imagination and creativity and most importantly to read."The tone of Wednesday's rally was much different than one held last week, in which tempers flared from the start. This time, only a handful of Drag Queen Story Hour supporters watched the rally from the side. Supporter Shelley Rudd, a retired teacher, said the drag queen reading program benefits children. "I think that it really helps those children who may be questioning, an opportunity to see that there are options and that it's okay," Rudd said. Last week, a different rally organized by a group called Mass Resistance got heated, with police stepping between both sides on two separate occasions. (KGTV) - Chula Vista Police and Sweetwater Union High School District security personnel trained Thursday to protect South Bay schools.The 6th annual Security Work Group Training, held on L St. in Chula Vista, was held to share security measures.The event was pre-planned and not related to the Parkland school shooting in Florida Wednesday, officials said.Chula Vista Police say they work with school resource officers to monitor situation both on and off campus. "They're handling kids that bring knives, drugs, maybe have made threats," said captain Vern Sallee. "I've gotten calls at midnight on a Saturday night that somebody posted something on social media. We would rather chance down false leads all day long than have to follow up on a real lead after a tragedy."The Sweetwater district says they have one of most comprehensive training sessions in the county.
