The affidavit was secured on the basis of Brown's sperm cells, which were found on a vaginal swab of Hough, though Rebecca Brown's attorney, Eugene Iredale, said those cells were most likely transferred onto the swab via accidental cross-contamination.Iredale told jurors that lab techs at the SDPD crime lab often used their own semen as reference samples when conducting testing for the presence of semen.Other DNA evidence found on Hough's clothing pointed to another suspect, Ronald Tatro, who was previously convicted in several other rapes and assaults on women. Tatro, who died in 2011, was matched to several blood stains and a pubic hair found on the girl's clothing, Iredale said.Despite Tatro's DNA being far more prominent on the swab, Iredale said Lambert used Brown's sperm cells and evidence that Brown had frequented strip clubs in the 1980s to suggest he worked in concert with Tatro in the killing.However, no such connection between the men was ever discovered, nor was Brown ever connected to the murder.Brown, who suffered from anxiety and depression, was "obsessed with getting his property back," Iredale said, yet was unable to secure their return over the course of several months.Iredale said the prospect of spending time in jail while fighting to clear his name and the property seizure was enough to push Brown to suicide.The attorney said Lambert was aware Brown was suicidal and held onto his property "because he knew it would cause pain and hurt, because he felt he was going to break him down, he was going to crack the case."Deputy City Attorney Catherine Richardson argued at trial that Lambert relied upon DNA experts when he wrote the affidavit and was not given all the information he needed.The attorney said Lambert asked about contamination when presented with the evidence of Brown's DNA, but was told by his sergeant that contamination was not possible. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A motorist was killed in a fiery solo vehicle crash off Interstate 5 in the Barrio Logan area, authorities said Monday.The crash was reported shortly after 9:30 p.m. Sunday on southbound I- 5 near Cesar E. Chavez Parkway, California Highway Patrol Officer Tommy Strickland said.Investigators determined a pickup truck hit the center divide, then went down an embankment before ending up on a nearby street and catching fire, Strickland said.The truck's driver was pronounced dead at the scene, but no details about the victim were immediately available.The crash shut down the right two lanes near Cesar Chavez Parkway until about 11:45 p.m. Sunday. 675

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A woman who caught herself on fire in her kitchen and her husband were burned when he rushed in to help his wife inside their home in the Bay Terraces neighborhood Sunday, fire officials said.The stove fire inside a home on the 7500 block of Careybrook Lane ignited about 3 p.m. Sunday, fire officials said.The husband used whatever he could find in order to help his wife, San Diego Fire Department Battalion Chief Brian Raines said."Eventually, there was water used from a bathroom," San Diego police Lt. Mike Ramsay told the station. "But due to whatever was used (by the husband) part of the flash, part of the fire, his clothing caught on fire."The husband and wife were taken to the UCSD hospital burn center. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Just one bid was received for San Diego's next utility franchise agreement -- a minimum million offer from San Diego Gas & Electric to provide the city's gas and electric utilities for the next 20 years, it was revealed Thursday at a special meeting of the City Council.After months of public comment, debate and concern over the franchise agreements, the lone bid -- actually split into a million bid for natural gas and million for electric -- was a surprise for many who believed multiple energy companies had expressed interest.The utility franchise agreement bid was unsealed and presented as an informational item. The council must take action at its next meeting on Jan. 12; the existing franchise agreement with SDG&E expires Jan. 17. It was originally signed as a 50-year agreement starting in 1970.SDG&E, whose parent company is San Diego-based Sempra Energy, has been the sole electric and gas utility for San Diego since 1920.Mayor Todd Gloria and five of the nine city council members were sworn in this month, leaving them just four weeks to decide whether to approve SDG&E's minimum bid for 20 years, ask for an extension to allow new elected officials to get up to speed, cancel the process altogether and start over or pursue municipalization -- purchasing and putting the city's utilities under public control.Many of the callers who weighed in Thursday urged the council to ask Gloria and SDG&E for a one-year extension rather than forcing a bad decision during an economic crisis. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A woman was killed in a chain-reaction crash triggered by a loose dog in lanes of state Route 94 near downtown San Diego today.Three cars were involved in the crash, which was first reported just after 10:30 a.m. on westbound Route 94 near 25th Street.A Ford F-150 owned by the San Diego Humane Society was parked in the median of the freeway with the driver and a passenger still inside, preparing to capture a dog when the animal ran into lanes of traffic, a California Highway Patrol dispatcher told City News Service.Multiple cars stopped and swerved, including a Toyota Camry with three occupants that braked and came to a stop in the No. 1 lane, the dispatcher said.A Dodge truck, also in the No. 1 lane, swerved into the median to avoid the Camry, and was struck in the right rear corner by a GMC Yukon towing a trailer that was unable to stop in time.The force of the impact pushed the Dodge into the Camry, which in turn pushed the Camry into the Humane Society pickup, according to the dispatcher.In the aftermath of the accident, it wasn't immediately clear how many cars were involved, but responding fire crews realized the Camry, which at some point had moved to the right shoulder of the freeway, was also part of the crash and launched a rescue operation for that car's occupants, according to a CHP incident log.A 53-year-old woman in the back seat of the Camry sustained a major head injury and was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries, the dispatcher said.The woman's identity wasn't immediately released.Three other people, including two from the Camry and one from the GMC, 1652
