Serena Williams is usually the one who inflicts heavy defeats on others, but the former world No.1 suffered the most one-sided loss of her illustrious career Tuesday when she was knocked out of the first round of the Silicon Valley Classic after a 6-1 6-0 defeat.During a 53-minute rout, British No.1 Johanna Konta, ranked 48th in the world, won 12 games in a row -- including two service games to love in the second set -- to progress to the second round in San Jose.Williams, a 23-time grand slam champion who only returned to the tour from maternity leave earlier this year, served seven double faults and made 25 unforced errors in, according to the WTA, the most one-sided loss of her career.Since turning professional in 1995, the 36-year-old Williams had never before lost a match without winning at least two games."I think she played well in the second set and I think I wasn't sharp at all in the first set and she got confident and she clearly ran away with it," Williams, who?reached the Wimbledon final?earlier this month, told reporters.Konta, who was a career-high No.4 in the world last year, becomes the first Briton to beat Williams."She obviously wasn't playing anywhere near her best level but I was just trying to play the match on my terms and do what I can out here and put aside the incredible champion she is and play the player on the day," Konta said in an on-court interview. 1411

Since the controversy surrounding "Baby, It's Cold Outside,” sales of the iconic Christmas song have been soaring.Billboard reports three different versions of the song from different performers have seen a bump and streaming for the song is up 54 percent for at least versions of the song. The song—written in 1944 by Frank Loesser—was criticized this year for its lyrics.Loesser’s daughter, Susan, is also defending the song, saying listeners need to examine the context.“It’s this flirty, funny, charming song,” Susan says. “I’ve always loved it.”Susan Loesser says she can’t help but smile every time she hears it."My mother considered it their song,” Susan recalls. “That's why she was crushed when he sold it to MGM for ‘Neptune's Daughter.’"The movie is a romantic comedy from 1949."But it won the Academy Award and she got over it,” Susan says. Now, fast forward 70 years, the song is getting attention for a very different reason.Radio stations began pulling the song, as critics argued the lyrics promotes rape culture. The uproar centers on the particular lyric, “Say, what’s in this drink?”It's a line that stands out, especially in the context of the #MeToo movement. But Susan says the movement, "doesn't get it.""I just think it's a mistake to attack this particular song,” she says. “It's not a date rape song. It's a flirt song, and they're both into it.”New York University songwriting professor Phil Galdston says that although we can't ask the song's composer about the now infamous line, we should consider the time period when the song was composed.“Social history suggests that particular line had the meaning of, Wow, I don't know how this is affecting me, so what's in it?’ That's a different context than it has today,” he explains. Some radio stations are now reversing the ban.As to whether generations to come will still be learning the tune, Susan says she believes they will.“I guess it depends on how politically correct we get,” she says. 1974

Special counsel Robert Mueller's team last year made clear it wanted former Trump campaign deputy Rick Gates' help, not so much against his former business partner Paul Manafort, but with its central mission: investigating the Trump campaign's contact with the Russians. New information disclosed in court filings and to CNN this week begin to show how they're getting it.In a court filing earlier this week, the public saw the first signs of how the Mueller team plans to use information from Gates to tie Manafort, the former Trump campaign chairman, directly to a Russian intelligence agency. Mueller's team alleges that Gates was in contact with a close colleague of Manafort's who worked for a Russian intelligence agency -- and that Gates knew of the spy service ties in September and October 2016, while he worked on the Trump campaign. Gates would have to talk about the communication with the man if prosecutors wanted, according to his plea deal. That's in line with what prosecutors told Gates months ago during high-stakes negotiations, CNN has learned. They told him they didn't need his cooperation against Manafort, according to a person familiar with the investigation, and instead wanted to hear what he knew about contact between the Trump campaign and Russians. The extent of Gates' knowledge about any such contact or what he told prosecutors hasn't been made public. As part of Gates' agreement to cooperate with the special counsel a month ago, he earned a vastly reduced potential sentence and had several charges dropped in two criminal cases against him.Gates' plea also adds to mounting pressure on his co-defendant Manafort -- who so far the government is making a central player in the investigation -- to change his plea and potentially help investigators. Under his plea agreement, Gates still could be called to testify against Manafort.Mueller's court filing Tuesday night, in a separate case for a lawyer whose firm did legal work for Gates and Manafort, made public the most direct effort yet by Mueller's team to draw a line between Manafort and the Trump campaign to Russian operatives. Prosecutors called the details of Gates' contact with the Russian intelligence officer during the campaign "pertinent to the investigation." 2268

Special counsel Robert Mueller's office dropped more potentially damning details -- from an allegation of "additional criminal conduct" to personal financial troubles -- in a response to Paul Manafort's request to change his bail proposal on Friday. The newly discovered alleged criminal conduct "includes a series of bank frauds and bank fraud conspiracies," a filing from the special counsel's office said on Friday night.Read the entire court filing in the window below. No new charges have been filed in open court against Manafort since he pleaded not guilty to nine counts of money laundering and making false statements about his business on October 30. But CNN has reported that additional indictments against the former Trump campaign chairman are being prepared. In their filing Friday, prosecutors allege Manafort received a million mortgage on a house of his in Fairfax, Virginia, by giving the Federal Savings Bank doctored business statements that overstated his wealth. The special counsel's office said it could show the court evidence of this bank fraud "and other bank frauds and conspiracies" at its next hearing, which has not yet been set.Manafort proposed the house in Fairfax as one of four properties that could secure his bail. Another is an apartment he owns in Trump Tower in New York, which is at risk of foreclosure, the prosecutors said. The prosecutors also noted that Manafort has "questioned his ability to maintain the payments on all his mortgages" and that members of his family aren't "willing to assume the risk" of helping him.Manafort earned a judge's approval to be released from house arrest two months ago, if he showed proper documentation and could secure a million bail with assets and properties. He has not been able to clear the judge's hurdles, and proposed a different approach to securing his bail Friday afternoon.The-CNN-Wire? & ? 2018 Cable News Network, Inc., a Time Warner Company. SpaceX’s test flight of its next-generation Starship rocket was deemed a success, despite a bit of an explosive landing. As part of the launch, SpaceX attempted to perform a “flip landing” of the rocket. Although the flip landing resulted in the rocket blowing up, the finish was not unexpected.“Lot of things need to go right, so maybe 1/3 chance,” SpaceX founder Elon Musk said last month about the odds of the rocket nailing the landing. The rocket’s mission was not to leave Earth’s atmosphere, but to test several parts of the Starship rocket.“This suborbital flight is designed to test a number of objectives, from how the vehicle’s three Raptor engines perform to the overall aerodynamic entry capabilities of the vehicle (including its body flaps) to how the vehicle manages propellant transition. SN8 will also attempt to perform a landing flip maneuver, which would be a first for a vehicle of this size,” SpaceX said before the flight.SpaceX said even if not everything went correctly, there would be plenty to learn from this test to improve on future flights.“With a test such as this, success is not measured by completion of specific objectives but rather how much we can learn, which will inform and improve the probability of success in the future as SpaceX rapidly advances development of Starship,” SpaceX said.Musk deemed aspects of the launch a success.“Successful ascent, switchover to header tanks & precise flap control to landing point!” Musk tweeted. The rocket remained airborne for over six minutes, and it was slated to reach an altitude of 41,000 feet. 1591
