LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Arkansas State Police say a man suspected of stealing a taxi was fatally shot by a trooper after the man stabbed and wounded another law enforcement officer over the weekend.State police say 58-year-old Aloysius Keaton of Little Rock crashed the stolen cab while exiting off Interstate 30 and stabbed an Arkansas Highway Patrol officer who tried to arrest him.Police say the trooper shot Keaton after a shock from a stun gun failed to stop him as he approached the trooper with the weapon.The trooper ordered Keaton to stop and drop the weapon, but police say he failed to comply with the order and charged toward the officer, who then shot the suspect with a handgun.Keaton later died from his injuries at an area hospital Saturday night.State police say the Highway Police officer was treated and released and the trooper was uninjured.Keaton’s body has been transported to the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory where an autopsy will be conducted.The trooper remains on paid administrative leave and has not yet been identified. 1056

In some states, more than half of prisoners have been infected, according to data collected by The Associated Press and The Marshall Project. As the pandemic enters its 10th month — and as the first Americans begin to receive a long-awaited COVID-19 vaccine — at least 275,000 prisoners have been infected and more than 1,700 have died. New cases in prisons this week reached their highest level since testing began in the spring, far outstripping previous peaks in April and August.“That number is a vast undercount,” said Homer Venters, the former chief medical officer at New York’s Rikers Island jail complex.Venters has conducted more than a dozen court-ordered COVID-19 prison inspections around the country. “I still encounter prisons and jails where, when people get sick, not only are they not tested but they don’t receive care. (KGTV)— A La Mesa woman, who was the victim of a recent burglary, is opening up to 10News about her frightening experience. 10News met the woman at her home, in a quiet, secluded neighborhood in La Mesa. In the last four years she and her family have lived in the house, they have always felt safe. Until last Saturday. “To see the figure of a stranger in your home is an absolute worst nightmare,” the woman said. La Mesa Police said at around 11 pm, an intruder came through the side entrance, opened her gate, and walked into the home through the sliding door. That is when the homeowner heard a thump.“I have a three-year-old son, and looked at the monitor, and made sure it wasn’t him. (KGTV) — Firefighters say a four-acre brush fire that ignited above a neighborhood on Saturday was sparked by a metal grinder.The Cordial Fire broke out at about on a hillside near Cordial Road and Avenida Del Charro just before 4 p.m. The fire originally began with moderate rate of spread before crews quickly stamped it out and prevented flames from threatening structures.Firefighters said the fire began after a metal grinder sparked dry grass."A small mishap can have disastrous effects, especially this time of year. Please be fire safe in everything you do," a tweet from CAL FIRE San Diego said.A fire crew was set to stay on scene into the evening to mop up the area. 702

LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) - The future of organ transportation may be passing through La Jolla. Physicians at Scripps Green Hospital recently moved a donated liver from Escondido to La Jolla in a new transport system before successfully transplanting it into a police officer. The effort was part of a clinical trial evaluating the transportation system, known as OCS (Organ Care System) Liver, at several major transplant medical centers across the United States. “It’s almost like putting the organ back in the body right away,” said Christopher Marsh, M.D, organ transplant surgeon and division head of Scripps Center for Organ and Cell Transplantation. The OCS is relatively larger than a microwave and pumps oxygenated blood along with other nutrients to the livers in transit. “We are constantly challenged by a shortage of livers to meet the transplant needs of our patients,” added Marsh, “warm perfusion transportation has the potential to expand the supply of organs that are available to our patients and, as a result, improve the chances of a successful transplant and a positive long-term health outcome for more of our patients.” Scripps expect to enroll nine more patients using the mechanical system in the clinical trial over the next year. 1263
