BEIJING, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- China's government-run welfare lottery has raised a total of 164.5 billion yuan (24.8 billion U.S. dollars) for public welfare funds over the last 23 years, the Welfare Lottery Distribution and Management Center (WLDMC) announced Monday.Total sales of welfare lottery tickets had amounted to 500 billion yuan (75.2 billion U.S. dollars) since the lottery started operation in 1987, said a statement issued by the WLDMC.Half of the funds were allocated to social welfare projects organized by local governments, and the rest to public welfare funds or projects administered by central authorities, including the Ministry of Civil Affairs (MCA), said the statement.The civil affair authorities for the past 23 years had supported more than 200,000 projects for the public good, the statement said.The projects included social welfare institutions, child welfare associations, homes for the aged in villages and towns, and community service centers.The WLDMC is administered by the Ministry of Civil Affairs, which was authorized by the State Council to raise welfare funds through lottery sales in 1987.
BELGRADE, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- Celebrating 30 years of cooperation and fraternal relations between the capitals of Serbia and China, an art exhibit entitled "The Beauty of Beijing" was opened in the Old Palace in Belgrade on Tuesday.Belgrade Mayor Dragan Djilas extended a welcome to the visiting Beijing delegation, underscoring years of cooperation and cultural exchanges."For us the bridge we are going to build together is important, along with our cultural components which will complement our desire for Belgrade in 2020 to be the European 'cultural capital'," said Djilas, making reference to the 1,507-meter bridge over the Danube River to be constructed by Chinese firms. BEIJING, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- A revised version of China's Regulation on Work-Related Injury Insurance will take effect Saturday, raising compensation standards while expanding the coverage to more organizations.The previous regulation stipulated that the compensation to families of workers who die on the posts is no more than five times the average annual salary in the previous year. The sum varies depending on the regions where the workers are working.Under the current system, the national average compensation is about 100,000 yuan, but the lowest regional average compensation is about 40,000 yuan.The new regulation raises the compensation to 20 times the national annual disposable income for urbanites per capita in the previous year, which means about 340,000 yuan according to 2009 statistics.In addition, the revised regulation covers the country's public institutions, social groups, non-profit grass-root organizations, foundations, law firms and accounting firms.Previously, the rules only include enterprises and small businesses and their employees in the system.
