In the record-setting 562 participants of this year’s Scripps National Spelling Bee, you will find nine sets of siblings. Sisters Triyatha and Pranathi Jamulla are one set of the siblings, and they think it’s pretty cool they both made it to the national competition. Last year, Triyatha watched Pranathi come in 25thplace in the National Spelling Bee, and it made her want to compete too. This year, the sisters tied in their school’s spelling bee, both earning a trip to nationals.It gave Pranathi a built-in study buddy.“Before, when it would just be me sitting at home and my sister would be out somewhere and doing something else, like it wouldn't be that motivating to study because I know like I'd rather be where she is,” Pranathi says. “And now that we're both in the room studying, it makes it easier to study, I guess.”It also meant Triyatha had an expert to tell her what to expect."Yeah, she definitely helps me to stay calm and composed and gives me a few tips on like winning languages and language patterns,” Triyatha explains.Their mom, Prasanna Jammula, says it’s easier having two spellers in the house.“They quiz each other. That's how they are learning, too," she says. "Now, we are on the same page right. Joe Biden has formally clinched the Democratic presidential nomination, setting him up for a bruising challenge to President Donald Trump that will play out against the unprecedented backdrop of a pandemic, economic collapse and civil unrest. The former vice president has effectively been his party’s leader since his last challenger in the Democratic primary, Bernie Sanders, ended his campaign in April. But Biden pulled together the 1,991 delegates needed to become the nominee after seven states and the District of Columbia held presidential primaries Tuesday. Biden reached the threshold three days after the primaries because several states, overwhelmed by huge increases in mail ballots, took days to tabulate results.Heading into Super Tuesday, Biden was the underdog. He lost contests in Iowa, New Hampshire and Nevada and was struggling to fundraise. Then, Biden scored a huge win in South Carolina on February 29, thanks in large part to endorsements and support from prominent black Democrats in the state. Following the South Carolina race, opponents Pete Buttigieg and Amy Klobuchar dropped out of the race and endorsed Biden. Biden was able to parlay his success in South Carolina into a massive Super Tuesday which catapulted the former vice president from underdog to favorite overnight. As the spread of COVID-19 forced Biden and opponent Bernie Sanders off the campaign trail, Sanders opted to drop out after the Wisconsin primary, leaving Biden standing alone.Biden will formally be nominated in August at the Democratic National Convention. The convention is slated to be held in Milwaukee, but it’s unknown if the coronavirus could interfere with having an in-person event. It's National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and there's a new push to keep roads safer. In Tennessee, the state with the highest levels of distracted-driving deaths in the country, police have taken a unique approach to catching distracted drivers. Officers are riding on city buses and watching drivers around them, catching ones on their phones and then calling for backup to pull them over. "This is distracted driving week throughout the United States, and so this week, we're spending time working on our roadways to bring attention to our drivers about this type of behavior that we're trying to stop," explains Steve Dillard with the Tennessee Highway Safety Office. In California, drivers can be issued a ticket for just holding your phone behind the wheel, even at a traffic stop. Now, the National Transportation Safety Board is pushing the state to take it a step further and become the first to ban hands-free calls, saying it can still cause drivers to be distracted.
