The Republican leaders of the House Judiciary and Oversight committees announced Friday they have wrapped up their review of the FBI's handling of the Hillary Clinton and Russia investigations, and raised concerns about the "thoroughness and impartiality" of the investigations. In a letter to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker and Department of Justice Inspector General Michael Horowitz, House Oversight Committee Chairman Trey Gowdy and House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte reiterate prior criticisms of the investigation. Among those critiques are former FBI Director James Comey's handling of the decision not to prosecute Clinton, as well as charges of political bias by now-former FBI agent Peter Strzok and former FBI lawyer Lisa Page. The lawmakers repeat their call for a special counsel to be appointed to investigate decisions made during both investigations and also what they call the "disparate way these two investigations were seemingly conducted."Notably, Goodlatte and Gowdy argue that special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation must be "trusted by Americans," writing "there has been no effort to discredit the work of the Special Counsel. Quite the opposite, whatever product is produced by the Special Counsel must be trusted by Americans and that requires asking tough but fair questions about investigative techniques both employed and not employed." 1444

TORONTO (AP) — Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is quarantining himself at home after his wife exhibited flu-like symptoms. Trudeau's office said Thursday that Sophie Grégoire Trudeau returned from a speaking engagement in Britain and had mild flu-like symptoms, including a low fever late, Wednesday night. She is being tested for the COVID-19 disease and is awaiting results. “She is self-isolating at home awaiting test results, and her symptoms have since subsided,” a statement from the PM’s office says.According to the statement, a doctor has advised the PM to continue daily activities while self-monitoring, given that he has no symptoms himself. “Out of an abundance of caution, the Prime Minister is opting to self-isolate and work from home until receiving Sophie's results," wrote Trudeau’s office. 829

The union representing US asylum officers asked a federal court to end the Trump administration's policy of returning some asylum seekers to Mexico for the duration of their immigration hearing."Asylum officers are duty bound to protect vulnerable asylum seekers from persecution. However, under the (Migrant Protection Protocols), they face a conflict between the directives of their departmental leaders to follow the MPP and adherence to our Nation's legal commitment to not returning the persecuted to a territory where they will face persecution," they wrote."They should not be forced to honor departmental directives that are fundamentally contrary to the moral fabric of our Nation and our international and domestic legal obligations."Asylum officers are involved in the asylum process, starting with the credible fear interview, and therefore carry an important role in carrying out the administration's policy, dubbed Migrant Protection Protocols.A lower court blocked the policy earlier this year. The 9th Circuit, however, has allowed the policy to continue pending appeal. 1098

Trump orders rapid withdrawal from Syria in apparent reversal19 DEC 18 10:23 ETBy Barbara Starr and Ryan Browne, CNN    (CNN) -- Planning is underway for a "full" and "rapid" withdrawal of US troops from Syria, a US defense official told CNN Wednesday. The decision, which would be a reversal from previously stated US policy, was made by President Donald Trump, who has long signaled his desire to get out of Syria, the official added. On Wednesday morning, the President tweeted, "we have defeated ISIS in Syria, my only reason for being there during the Trump Presidency."Even though the US will continue to maintain troops in Iraq with the capability of launching strikes into Syria, a US withdrawal of ground forces would fulfill a major goal of Syria, Iran and Russia and risks diminishing US influence in the region. The US has about 2,000 troops on the ground in the country, where they are primarily training local forces to combat ISIS. The US-backed and Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces have had some recent success against the terror group and are on the cusp of capturing the last major town held by ISIS east of the Euphrates.Estimates vary as to how many ISIS fighters are left in Syria. In the town of Hajin, the terror group's last redoubt, the coalition estimated some 2,000 ISIS fighters were present. But a Defense Department inspector general report put the number of ISIS members in Syria and Iraq as high as 30,000.The US has forces in Iraq ready to launch attacks in Syria if necessary. In the last few weeks, the US-led coalition fighting ISIS has carried out hundreds of air and artillery strikes targeting ISIS in Syria. Some of those strikes were launched from neighboring Iraq, where the US has over 5,000 troops. Hundreds of US troops have also been training local forces at At Tanf in southern Syria, where Russia-backed pro-regime forces are seeking to oust the US presence.Pentagon spokesman Col. Rob Manning told CNN that, "at this time, we continue to work by, with and through our partners in the region."The US-led coalition recently denied any change to the US presence in Syria."Any reports indicating a change in the US position with respect" to the US military presence in Syria "is false and designed to sow confusion and chaos," the coalition said in a statement earlier this month.Gen. Joseph Dunford, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said this month that the US needed to train thousands of local fighters to ensure a lasting defeat of the terror group.US forces were recently directed by Secretary of Defense James Mattis to establish observation posts along the Syria-Turkish border as part of an effort to reduce tensions between Turkey and America's Kurdish allies in the fight against ISIS.News of the planned withdrawal was 2818
