VIENTIANE, March 29 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao arrived here on Saturday evening, starting his working visit to Laos.     Wen is also scheduled to attend the 3rd Summit of the Great Mekong Subregion countries -- China, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and Myanmar -- to be convened in this Laos capital city on Monday.     According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Wen, invited by Lao Prime Minister Bouasone Bouphavanh, will meet with Lao President Choummaly Saygnasone and hold talks with his Lao counterpart Bouasone on future bilateral cooperation.     Wen and Bouasone are scheduled to attend the signing ceremony of cooperation agreement in the sectors of economy, technology, coal and e-governance. The great majority of these people live in rural areas where they lead subsistence or semi-subsistence agricultural lifestyles.     The area boasts abundant natural resources and huge development potential. With a long history of cultural and economic exchanges among the nations, the area has formed peculiar cultural and economic characteristics based on different folk customs and natural landscapes of the six nations sharing the river.     The first GMS Summit was held in Cambodia's Phnom Penh in 2002,and the second in southwest China's Kunming in 2005. 

HONG KONG, July 6 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping said here Sunday he is glad to see that the Olympic spirit has won common acknowledgment among the general public in Hong Kong.     He made the remarks when meeting with delegates of Hong Kong athletes and volunteers set to participate or serve in the Beijing Olympics and Paralympics.     "I am very glad to see that you are all in such a good mood and so energetic. This is the spirit we need to stage a high-level Olympic Games with distinctive features," Xi told the delegates. BEIJING  -- The Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) is forecasting an 8 percent increase in the country's Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the first quarter of 2008. The official government figures come out in mid-April.The bank said in a report issued on Thursday that the CPI would hit 8.2 percent in March, slightly down from the previous month as the effects from the snow chaos that hit China earlier this year died away.Inflation in China took its biggest jump in nearly 12 years in February when it rose 8.7 percent compared to the same period a year earlier. Food prices surged 23.3 percent while non-food prices edged up 1.6 percent from the year earlier period.Inflation was mainly fueled by rising food and energy prices in the global market, and compounded by domestic factors that included increased costs and a strong demand, the report said.The new round of global grain price rises, including rice and wheat, might add more pressure to the government's anti-inflation efforts.However, the inflation index would start decelerating in the second half of 2008 as the government's macro controls took effect. The continued global slowdown also weighed on demand and could gradually pull down prices, the report said.China rolled out a series of measures to fight inflation after the government was reshuffled last month. Among the latest moves was an increase in farm subsidies to boost production and curb grain price hikes.

BEIJING, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- China and Venezuela on Wednesday inked a series of agreements on wide-ranging fields, a sign of bilateral efforts to advance their strategic partnership to a new high.     The agreements came out of the summit talks in the Great Hall of the People as Beijing rolled out the red carpet for Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.     The 12 new cooperative deals covered trade, oil, finance, education, justice, telecommunications, infrastructure, sports and cultural relics. He wished the Chinese government and people a speedy recovery from the disaster.     On the Beijing Olympics and Paralympics, Hu said China appreciated Venezuela's generous support while Chavez said the successes of hosting the two games would go down in history.     Stressing both China and Venezuela stayed at an important stage, Hu said the two countries shared the goal of stepping up substantive cooperation and seeking common prosperity.     To advance the bilateral strategic partnership, Hu proposed the two countries keep the high-level visits, enhance dialogues between the governments, legislatures and ruling parties, and exchange views on issues of common concern.     On the economic front, Hu said China would like to deepen "all-phase and integrated" oil cooperation with Venezuela, encourage businesses to invest in Venezuela and establish a trade zone.     China will also participate in building Venezuela's infrastructures, including railway system, telecommunications network, social housing and hydro-power.     Hu also called on the two countries to work more closely in education, culture, science and technology, justice, sports, journalism and poverty eradication.     Sharing Hu's view on bilateral ties, Chavez said bilateral trade had progressed smoothly, citing remarkable progress in oil, agriculture, science and infrastructure.     Chave said Venezuela would like to work closely with China on stronger political ties, increased dialogues and more substantive cooperation in energy, finance, agriculture and machinery.     On international issues, Hu and Chavez agreed to step up communication and consultation in multi-lateral organizations and on global issues, so as to safeguard the reasonable rights of developing countries.     Earlier Wednesday, top Chinese legislator Wu Banguo also met with Chavez. Wu said China's National People's Congress, the country's top legislature, would like to maintain its friendly exchanges and cooperation with the Venezuelan legislature, boosting the overall bilateral ties.     Chavez will conclude his three-day state visit to China on Thursday.

XI'AN, May 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping has urged local officials to help solve living difficulties for people who have suffered from a major earthquake.     Xi made the call during his inspection to northwestern Shaanxi Province, in which some counties were seriously affected by the deadly quake in neighboring Sichuan Province on May 12.     At Xujiaping village, Xi comforted villagers and encouraged them to resume production as early as possible. Among all 146 households of the village, 126 were affected by the quake and half of their houses were either damaged or flattened.     Xi urged local officials to offer whatever they could to help the people with rebuilding their homes.     The Vice President later came to a middle school, where he told the students and teachers the government had planned for the reconstruction of all quake-ravaged areas across the country.     He reminded local governments to carry out serious epidemic prevention, especially the safety of water and food after the disaster.
