SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- One man is behind bars after a series of events in Rancho Penasquitos, including nearly running over a firefighter. Around 2:30 p.m. California Highway Patrol received a report of a reckless vehicle on SR-76 near Cole Grade Road Monday. The blue Toyota RAV4 was reported after unsafely passing vehicles and speeding in the area. Shortly after, CHP reported that the driver - Falahi Abrahim - was involved in a crash and started a brush fire.Shortly after Cal Fire responded to the fire, 37-year-old Abrahim from fled the scene - nearly hitting the firefighter who was trying to help him.Police officers followed, but Abrahim refused to stop and a pursuit began. The pursuit continued westbound on SR-76 to I-15 and transitioned to I-15 Southbound. The vehicle continued to flee from officers on I-15 Southbound and exited the freeway at Camino Del Norte where the vehicle progressed eastbound.During the chase Abrahim failed to stop for two red lights at separate intersections and officers discontinued the pursuit in the interest of public safety.A San Diego Police Department helicopter continued to follow the car, communicating Abrahim's location to the CHP. At 3:11 p.m. the driver stopped near the 10000 block of Carmel Mountain Road. After a short foot pursuit, Abrahim was taken into custody and arrested under suspicion of driving under the influence of a drug and felony evading charges.The incident involving the assault of the firefighter at the collision scene is still under investigation. 1572

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Most school districts in San Diego County are still figuring out how to reopen classrooms in the fall. On Wednesday, the Office of Education released new guidance on how districts and charter schools can do that safely. They put out comprehensive guidance that includes recommendations to alter many aspects of everyday life for parents, students, and teachers. It includes symptom screening, altering classroom layouts to support physical distancing. They also recommend frequently cleaning common areas, wearing face coverings, and restricting visitor access. "Recommendations about not using water fountains because of the multiple touches there, or about spacing desks as far apart as practicable so that you can have distancing," said Watson, Chief of Staff with the Office of Education. On Tuesday, the San Diego Unified District approved their reopening plan. It would allow parents to decide whether or not to send their kids back to campus or continue online learning at home. The Grossmont Union High School District says they're currently conducting input sessions with focus groups. They tell ABC 10News they hope to have a plan in place for board approval by early to mid-July. The Poway Unified School District says they'll have a plan by June 25. Their superintendent released survey results with parents, showing 59% of families want students to return to campus full-time. Meanwhile, 41% say they would prefer a blended or virtual learning option to continue. The Sweetwater Union High School District is hosting a virtual town hall on June 18 where parents can give input on what changes they hope to see. "Have a way of keeping records so that if someone ends up testing positive you can do the contact tracing to be able to go back and figure out with whom they've had contact," said Watson. "We really wanted to plan for every eventually, every possibility so that schools can be prepared."The Office of Education also recommends all schools keep the option of distance learning for families who prefer it. 2630

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police were involved in a chase that led to a standoff in Valencia Park Wednesday night.Video from Sky10 showed police chasing the suspect through residential streets. The chase began after police spotted the woman, who is wanted for burglaries and identity thefts throughout San Diego County, driving on the 805.The woman refused to stop and led both Harbor Police and San Diego Police on a slow-speed chase. Police then used spike strips that appeared to flatten one of the vehicle’s tires.The driver stopped a short distance after the spikes were used. Police could then be seen taking a police K9 out of one of the vehicles.The woman refused to get out of her car after police threatened to send in the K9 unit. The suspect sat in her car until officers approached the vehicle, broke the drivers side window, and pulled her out of the car.In video captured from the scene, the woman could then be seen being taken into custody.Live video captured by Sky10 shows the whole incident. Watch the video in the player below:  1066

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Most San Diego voters support a sales tax for public transit improvements, according to a study commissioned by the Metropolitan Transit System and the San Diego Association of Governments. Poll results released Wednesday show more than two-thirds of voters are in favor of a dedicated half-cent sales tax measure to raise revenue for new projects, FM3 Research reported. The City of San Diego’s current sales tax is 7.75 percent. 44 percent of those surveyed said they were “definitely yes” in favor of the sales tax measure. 23 percent voted “probably yes”. 19 percent said they were “definitely no” on a tax hike increase, according to the study.The poll results are the first step in a discussion between transit officials and the public that are expected to take place through the end of 2019. MTS will review public input and propose a spending and financing plan. “We have significant public interest in bringing fast, safe, reliable public transit to San Diego and the region,” said San Diego County Supervisor and MTS Board Member Nathan Fletcher. “It is time to reimagine how our region moves by working together to create a transit strategy that connects our communities, reduces congestion, provides more transportation options and builds the foundation for a cleaner, greener, more sustainable future. We have a lot of work to do, but we are encouraged by the results.” Transit upgrades and additions could include new trolley and bus routes, and safety enhancements, MTS officials said. “We are taking the next steps to creating a shared vision of the San Diego we want to see and this includes real choices in how residents move throughout their day,” said MTS Board Chair and San Diego City Council President Georgette Gómez. “We must be intentional and inclusive.
