SAN DIEGO, Calif (KGTV) - New recommendations aim to help the thousands of teenagers living with depression who are suffering in silence. The American Academy of Pediatrics released new guidelines for primary care doctors to screen young people. They say 2 out of 3 depressed teens are not being identified by their doctors and not getting the care they need. One survey doctors can give to patients is just two questions, another is nine. The purpose is not to establish a final diagnosis but rather screen for depression in a "first step" approach. San Diego Pediatrician Jaime Friedman believes it's a positive step to help young people and that it will be fairly easy to incorporate into visits. She will soon be using tablets on which parents and teens can answer questions related to their visit, they'll also be able to conduct the depression screening on them. Doctors are also being advised to talk to families about safety plans, removing lethal medications or guns from the home to prevent suicide. The AAP recommends young people get screened at least once a year starting at age 12.  1144

San Diego is weighing major new rules that would ban people from living in their cars near schools and homes.The proposal would block anyone from living in their cars within 500 feet of a school or residence, and also prohibit them from living in their cars on most other city streets between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.San Diegans living in their cars have had free reign since a judge ruled in August that its current laws were too vague. That's led to concerns from some residents in beach areas, who say they have seen people drinking in cars, as well as urinating and defecating on neighborhood streets. "I used to feel very safe walking around throughout La Jolla, Pacific Beach and everything, and there's a lot of times I don't feel as safe as I used to," said Sarah Bonesteel, a Crown Point resident. The issue of in-car living has grown along with San Diego's high housing costs. The car is one of the last pieces of shelter a homeless person may possess, Mayor Kevin Faulconer noted Tuesday. At a news conference, the mayor announced that the city would open an additional parking lot for people to legally sleep in their cars. It will be in the overflow lot across from SDCCU Stadium, providing access to housing and other services."The goal for every person or family staying here will be to access resources to get back into long-term housing," Faulconer said. Meanwhile, the city's Public Safety and Livable Neighborhoods Committee will consider the citywide restrictions Wednesday. Ann Menasche, a senior attorney with Disability Rights California, called the proposed rules draconian and said the fault is with the city. SAN DIEGO, CA (KGTV) -- A debate is unfolding across the country, and right here in San Diego over how and when to reopen schools during this pandemic.With the new school year is quickly approaching, and the number of coronavirus cases continuing to surge locally, many teachers are left with concerns about opening their classrooms.The California Teachers Association (CTA), one of the largest teachers unions, urging state lawmakers to hold off reopening schools until it is proven to be safe enough."It is not reasonable for us to think that it’s safe for us to go back to schools," said E. Toby Boyd, the president of CTA who heard from teachers across the state. "We have to look at what is being mentioned in terms of the science, the facts, and how the disease is being spread."People are very afraid, very concerned because they either have underlying health conditions or someone in their household does," said Kisha Borden, the president of the San Diego Education Association (SDEA). "I'm hearing from educators of all ages who are very concerned about being put into an enclosed space, their classroom, with 25 to 30 children without the proper protocols in place."The San Diego Unified School District will start the 2020-2021 school year on Aug. 31 with an option of in-person or online distance learning.But, Borden said before teachers return, they have some demands."We're asking for at least a decline in cases over 14 days so that we're not bringing back large groups of people during a time when we're seeing an increase in cases," she said.The union would also like to see widespread, accessible, and frequent COVID-19 testing of students, staff, and parents when necessary, and fully-funded doctor recommended prevention measures.The district has listened to the union's concerns, and Borden said, after the latest meeting, she's feeling hopeful."I'm encouraged, the last statement that came from the district said that they'd like to meet with health professionals, they'd like to meet with public safety experts and really come up with clear medically proven guidelines and timelines around what is going to be necessary to bring students and staff back into our classrooms," she said.SDEA sent ABC 10News the following statement 2261
