Recovering from a natural disaster is a long process those along Florida’s panhandle know well. “There are hundreds of buildings that had to be demolished or torn down and there are still hundreds to go,” says Luther Stanford. Stanford is the pastor of 265
Sexually transmitted diseases are on the rise across the country. A new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found combined cases of syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia reached an all-time high in the United States in 2018.In Humboldt County, California, health officials say sexually transmitted diseases have been on the rise for five years in a row. “We went from 434 chlamydia cases in 2014 to 790 in 2018,” said Hava Phillips of Humboldt County Department of Health and Human Services. “But last year, we saw sharper spike in HIV and syphilis.”We’re learning Humboldt County’s STD statistics mirror national numbers. According to the CDC, from 2017 to 2018, gonorrhea cases increased 5 percent to more than 580,000 cases.During the same time, reported chlamydia cases increased 3 percent to more than 1.7 million cases – that’s the most ever reported to CDC.And perhaps the most concerning number: syphilis cases among newborns increased 40 percent to more than 1,300 cases.“No one has boyfriends and girlfriends anymore; it’s like major hook up culture,” one Humboldt County man said. “That could be one reason why we are having higher STDs now.” With the reasons ranging from more people getting tested to fewer people using condoms, cuts to public health services and online dating are thought to be a big factors as well.“We are seeing changes cultural attitudes towards sex,” Phillips said. “We are seeing the availability of things like social networking applications that allow for meeting anonymous partners more easily.”To help slow down the spread of STDs, Humboldt County Health is spreading their message both online and in person with coasters warning people about the increase in STDs. “The idea was to make sure that people were aware that we were seeing an increase in syphilis cases and they can protect themselves better,” Phillips said. And in this small city that’s seeing big problems, they say the only sure way to stay safe is to be safe. 1999

TAMPA, Fla. — While spring breakers head to beach communities, some Florida cities are enacting extra measures amid coronavirus concerns. In some areas of Fort Lauderdale, public beaches are closing daily at 4:30 p.m. and bars and restaurants must close before 10 p.m. Miami Beach reportedly enacted similar measures with an 11 p.m. curfew for bars and restaurants, as well as 4:30 p.m. beach closures, including on South Beach. Other states are closing bars and limiting restaurants to take-out only. Florida Governor Ron Desantis praised city leaders for the move and said he'd like to see other beach communities implement the same measures. "I think it’s important that these social distancing measures are implemented so that we are able to prevent infections from running completely out of hand," he said during a news conference Sunday. The concerns surrounding the virus didn't keep people away from Clearwater Beach over the weekend and on Monday, though. "I have auto immune diseases and I am a senior. But I really think as long as I’m very safe and I wash my hands constantly, I will be safe and my family will be safe," said Tricia Wood. Clearwater leaders met Monday to discuss the idea of adding curfews to the beach or closing the sand, but they did not come to a final decision. City leaders plan to discuss with county and state leaders and could make a final decision at Thursday's upcoming city council meeting. Meanwhile, the governor's office reported Visit Florida is re-evaluating tourism promotion messages and developing long term strategies to keep Florida in mind for potential future travelers. 1636

Some of my earliest memories of watching MSU football involved Charles Rogers. I remember being so excited to get my jersey signed by him as a kid. RIP Charles Rogers.— Zach Fanko (@zachfanko52) 207
