SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - 10News sat down exclusively with Father Joe Carroll to talk about his legacy and fight against homelessness.He got involved with the homeless in San Diego in 1982. "The bishop called me in his office told me, the next day he's going to appoint me head of St. Vincent de Paul and my job was to build a shelter."Immediately assigned as the guy to find a solution to the problem, "When I first started, I'd be writing letters, 'please help me, please help me' and I'd get stacks back, 'no, no, no'."Despite dealing with rejection and other challenges early on, Father Joe has remained committed to fighting homelessness for decades. As Father Joe says, "the rest is history."He remembers ten years ago when he first recognized the problem of homelessness was growing. "We ignored it and we ignored it and had all these crazy ideas which I still think they have, so, I still think it's not reachable for a few more decades."Father Joe may be retired but he's still involved weekly in the fight against homelessness.As he watches the City of San Diego continue to try and solve the problems, he tells 10News, "housing is not the answer to homelessness."He says, instead, the answer is rehabilitation.After decades of fighting homelessness, Father Joe says the answers come from the individuals themselves, "slowly but surely I learned you had to talk to the homeless first to know what you're doing."While he's more removed from Father Joe's Villages since retirement, he still talks with the homeless community daily."Everyday I get out of here, I shake hands with people who are success stories, and that's what makes me want to do more." 1663

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A fourth suspect has been arrested in connection with the murder of a 44-year-old in Bay Terraces back in June.San Diego Police say 27-year-old Leaoaisemativa Sandoval was arrested on Dec. 19 and charged with the murder of Sean Nixon. Prosecutors say on June 6, Nixon was strangled with a strap from a marijuana grow tent inside a home on Freed Manor Lane.SDPD officers have also arrested Glenn Montano, Alfredo Sales Montano Jr., and Joshua Barnum. All were booked into County Jail for murder.The District Attorney’s Office says that Glen Montano wrapped the strap around the victim’s neck, while Alfredo Montano struck Nixon multiple times and kicked him while he was being strangled.Two of the suspects, who are brothers, were allegedly running an illegal gambling den and cannabis grow operation at the home. 840

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A broken fire hydrant sent thousands of gallons of water gushing into the air Friday, damaging home on the 5100 block of Mariner Drive, near Otay Mesa.  The home received flood damage on the first floor of the house, as well as the yard. The cars in the driveway were drenched as well.  Water was gushing from the broken hydrant for nearly 20 minutes, according to the homeowner, Gary Birtwell.  "It was coming in through the backdoor," Birtwell said. "We had about 6 inches of water in the back yard that basically filled up above the door. And it was coming in through a closed window on the side of the house. We had water that came in through the ventilation." A neighbor's security video captured what appears to be a white SUV pulling into the curb then hitting the hydrant. Water begins gushing, and the SUV takes off.  Police officers took the neighbor's security video from the scene and were looking for more footage of the incident. 1015

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Two San Diego area residents are among the contestants on Thursday evening's episode of the ABC miniature golf series "Holey Moley," including Avis Brown-Riley, who played in the 1988 U.S. Women's Open but missed the cut after two rounds."It was a spectacular and exhilarating experience, now I know what the movie stars experience while filming and one that I always treasure," she said of her miniature golf experience. "The Disney/ABC television production staff rolled out the red carpet and treated all the contestants like royalty. It was inspiring ... especially when the audience was rallying and cheering me along."She also tweeted the water she fell into was cold.Brown-Riley is a Chula Vista resident who is a member of the board of directors of the Southwestern College Foundation, serving as a goodwill ambassador for the community college. It has doubled the number of holes and increased prize money from the first.The course at the Sable Ranch in Santa Clarita has been expanded to 18 holes, "giving us a lot more variety and (a) new hole every single week," creator and executive producer Chris Culvenor told City News Service.In the first season, "the audience loved the holes with a lot of physical comedy like 'Dutch Courage' with the giant windmills, so for the second season we've designed the course with a lot more hilarious thrills and spills," Culvenor said.The winners of each of the season's first 12 episodes will advance to the finale, where the winner will receive 0,000. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A group of friends from Del Norte High School in 4S Ranch have turned their summer boredom into a way to help others.Andrew Zhang, Jerry Wu, Nick Genovese and Rishi Peddakama are 3D printing face shields and donating them to local hospitals."I guess we were all just kind of feeling like restless and we needed to do something during this like difficult time," Zhang says on why he and his friends decided to start making PPE from scratch.The boys have turned their summertime hobby into a new non-profit, Shield Our Health Heroes. Their website has a place for donations, and all of the money goes towards materials for more face shields.So far, they've raised enough money to donate 750 face shields to 10 local hospitals."We've been told multiple times that our shields fit better and are better quality than a lot of the shields that they're getting," says Genovese."I really think we are making an impact in our community," adds WU. "Our products are actually really helping these health care workers who need these."The four friends each brought their unique talents to the group effort. Andrew came up with the idea and has spearheaded the project. Rishi built the website and set up the donation PayPal account. Jerry does all of the social media and advertising. Nick contacts the hotels and sets up the deliveries."We try to make it hassle free for them," says Peddakama."We just really want to give back during this time," says Zhang.
