On Monday, drugmaker Moderna offered renewed hope that the COVID-19 pandemic could soon end when it announced that is vaccine candidate was 95% effective in Phase 3 clinical trials. The announcement marked a resounding success for dozens of researchers, doctors, scientists and health experts who have worked tirelessly for months in the hopes of producing a viable vaccine — and among those credited with helping to fund the research was beloved country singer and philanthropist Dolly Parton. In April, Parton announced that she was making a million donation to the Vanderbilt University Medical Center that was earmarked for COVID-19 research. The team at Vanderbilt has worked with Moderna throughout its development process and helped conduct vaccine trials for people in the Nashville area."This is an exciting time for us in vaccines because it shows us that both of the vaccines that we've evaluated so far, one from Pfizer and one from Moderna has shown themselves to be effective when given in these phase three trials," said Dr. Buddy Creech, the director of Vanderbilt's Vaccine Research Program. "So, it gives us a lot of confidence that not only are these vaccines successful, but other vaccines that are built similarly will have the same level of success." 1281
OAK PARK, Mich. — The city of Oak Park, Michigan will host its annual Boo Bash Halloween event next Wednesday, but they are not allowing anyone to come as a clown. On the event page, the city says people can bring children in their favorite Halloween costumes, collect candy down the trick-or-treat street and enjoy cider and donuts. They also say that clown costumes are not allowed.Oak Park Recreation Director Laurie Stasiak told the Oakland County Times the ban stems from fear and anxiety over clowns for some children."In the past few years, many clown costumes have been given a very scary and evil look. Many scary and horror movies are centered around these types of characters. About three years [ago] there were national incidents in the news where people were dressing up as clowns and scaring people and in some cases assaulting them," she told the Oakland County?Times. "Many people have phobias and anxiety about clowns. It’s because of this that we asked people not to dress up as clowns for this community event.” 1067
OCEANSIDE (CNS) - A 32-foot sailboat capsized and ran aground on the Oceanside shoreline Saturday morning, authorities said. The boat's skipper and only occupant was treated at a hospital but only sustained minor injuries from the accident, which police responded to at around 12:15 a.m. Saturday, Oceanside Police Officer Nick Nunez said. The skipper had left Santa Catalina Island for Dana Point in Orange County late Friday, but his navigation equipment went out sometime during the journey and he decided to head for Oceanside, which he believed he could get to without instruments, Nunez said. The boat made it to Oceanside but the skipper missed the Oceanside Harbor entrance, got caught in a swell and ended up running into the beach near the 1200 block of North Pacific Street.Police were still working to get the boat off the beach around 10 a.m. Saturday morning, Nunez said. The capsized vessel could be seen on a surf report live-stream of Oceanside Harbor on surfline.com. A GoFundMe has been started. 1020
Older women with excess body fat, even if they have what's considered a normal body-mass index, could be at greater risk for breast cancer, according to a study published Thursday in the medical journal JAMA Oncology."We do find that excess body fat in those who are post-menopausal with a normal body mass index is associated with about a doubling in the risk of estrogen-dependent breast cancer," said Dr. Andrew Dannenberg, one of the study's authors and director of cancer prevention at the Sandra and Edward Meyer Cancer Center at Weill Cornell Medicine. The American Cancer Society says estrogen-dependent cancers, called ER-positive breast cancer in the study, occur when the receptor proteins in or on cells attach to the hormone estrogen and rely on it to grow. The researchers studied 3,460 American women between the ages of 50 and 79 who had gone through menopause. The women were part of the Women's Health Initiative and had their body composition measured at the beginning of that program, Dannenberg said. Of those women, 146 developed ER-positive breast cancer, and the researchers looked for a relationship between excess body fat and the development of this cancer. 1190

CSUSM also said it believes the timing of the posters was connected to the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting. 1651
