SCRANTON, Pa. -- At Hank’s Hoagies, sandwiches are on order, along with a helping of politics.“A lot of political people around here,” said owner Tom Owens. That includes a life-size cutout of former Vice President Joe Biden, which makes more sense once you realize Hank’s Hoagies is located in his hometown of Scranton, Pennsylvania. He made an unscheduled stop there last October.“He’s a great guy,” Owens said. “When you meet him, it’s like you knew him all your life."This corner of Pennsylvania is part of the so-called Rust Belt. It’s a collection of states scattered around the Great Lakes – an area of former industrial powerhouses stretching from western New York, through Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois and into southeast Wisconsin.“There’s this whole string of connected states that share media markets, that share some common demographic factors and where small shifts in the vote can have big results in the Electoral College,” said Prof. Barry Burden, a political science professor and director of the Elections Research Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.He said both presidential campaigns will likely pay special attention to this area for one main reason.“There are a lot of people living here, which means there are a lot of electoral votes to be had,” Prof. Burden said. “Several of the states are really up for grabs in almost any presidential election.”That includes Pennsylvania, which holds 20 electoral votes and has a long history of being a swing state. Republicans won the state during presidential elections of the 1980s: 1980, 1984 and 1988. Then Democrats won it in the 1990s and 2000s: 1992, 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2012 – until Republicans won it once again in 2016.That’s not the only Rust Belt state that’s gone back and forth, so has Ohio, with 18 electoral votes.“I'm telling you, I kind of like what Trump's doing," said Ohio voter Charles Krumel. In Toledo, Ohio – months before election day, voters are already paying attention to the issues.“Most important thing is keeping the stock market up for us retired people, keeping social security for us retired people and keeping the economy going," said Alan Morse, another Ohio voter.Back in Scranton, Pennsylvania, there are similar concerns, but one trumps it all.“The coronavirus,” Owens said. “Just to get everybody on the same page in the country. Get a plan – get a unified plan.”Issues that could very well bring the road to the White House right through the Rust Belt. 2501

SEATTLE, Wash – Amazon announced Tuesday that it would be launching a billion venture capital fund to invest in companies that are building products, providing services and creating technology to decarbonize the economy and protect the planet from climate change. The company hopes The Climate Pledge Fund will enable it and other companies to meet The Climate Pledge, a commitment to be net carbon neutral by 2040.Amazon co-founded The Climate Pledge with Global Optimism last year. Since then, companies like Verizon, Reckitt Benckiser, and Infosys have also taken the pledge.“The Climate Pledge Fund will look to invest in the visionary entrepreneurs and innovators who are building products and services to help companies reduce their carbon impact and operate more sustainably,” said Jeff Bezos, Amazon founder and CEO. “Companies from around the world of all sizes and stages will be considered, from pre-product startups to well-established enterprises. Each prospective investment will be judged on its potential to accelerate the path to zero carbon and help protect the planet for future generations.”Amazon says the billion will be used to invest in companies in multiple industries, including transportation and logistics, energy generation, storage and utilization, manufacturing and materials, circular economy, and food and agriculture.Over time, Amazon says it will also look for opportunities to involve other Climate Pledge signatories in this venture investment program.“Amazon has demonstrated its leadership in adopting low carbon technologies at scale,” said Rivian CEO R.J. Scaringe. “Their investment in Rivian and subsequent order of 100,000 electric delivery vans will substantially shrink the carbon footprint of Amazon’s package delivery network. We're excited about a future of decarbonized delivery services.”Also on Tuesday, Amazon updated its sustainability goals and programs, including its goal to run on 100% renewable energy by 2025, five years ahead of schedule. 2012

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- The Trump administration says is is cutting 0 million in federal healthcare funding to California because the state requires insurance providers to cover abortions. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services said Wednesday it will withhold the funding from Medicaid in the new fiscal quarter starting in January, and "if the state does not come into compliance" the department will cut another 0 million per fiscal quarter.Earlier this year, the administration warned California that it could lose federal funding over a 2014 regulation mandating that employers and private insurance plans pay for abortions. 649

SANTEE, Calif. (KGTV) - A Paradise family is thanking the San Diego community, after donations began pouring in for them following the deadly Camp Fire. The Harrisons are currently staying with family in Santee after the fire destroyed their homes. With nothing to return to, the family said they may make San Diego their permanent home and have already started looking at schools for their teenage son."I don't think Thanksgiving could have come at a better time," said Emily Keith, who evaded flames while carrying the family's three pets and caring for her brother."I had to go up on sidewalks and into front yards and in between trees, and try to maneuver my way out of town," Keith said.RELATED: Light rain falling on Camp Fire zone could hurt search effortDuring the evacuation, the children were separated from their parents. At one point, their car caught fire and they were forced to run from the flames."It was a life or death situation, honestly," Haley Harrison said. "I was running down the road hoping that someone would stop."The family made it safely to Chico nearly seven hours later. While they haven't been able to go back to Paradise, they've seen photos of their homes burned to the ground."My kids are safe. 18 years of stuff and memories we had in the house are gone but I don't care about that," Haley and Emily's dad Tyler said. "You hit the reset button. What else are you going to do?"The Camp Fire has now claimed nearly three times as many lives and structures than any other wildfire in California history. The Harrisons said the outpouring of support from people in San Diego has been overwhelming, and hope to somehow thank everyone who has donated to help them. They said the community reaction has been one of the positive things to come from the tragedy. If you'd like to help, a GoFundMe account has been set up for the family here.  1903

SAN YSIDRO, Calif. (KGTV) — After a series of delays, a project to revamp a stretch of Otay Mesa Road near San Ysidro High School is nearing completion. The city says it expects to reopen the half-mile portion of the road, from Hawken Drive to Saltaire Place, by the second week of May. The stretch of road has been closed since 2016, cutting off access to San Ysidro High School and the 905 freeway for residents of the Remington Hills neighborhood."You either hit all the stoplights going all the way out over to Picador (Blvd), or you have to go all the way around through San Ysidro, 805 to the 905," said Benjamin Bribiesca, who says the detour adds upwards of 15 to 20 minutes to his daily commute to his job in Eastlake. The city says some of the final work to be done includes grading, repaving, adding anti-graffiti materials, re-vegetation and some sidewalk improvements. The .5 million project also added a protected sidewalk for San Ysidro High School students, who for more than a decade had been walking on a dirt path close to cars passing on the winding road. The project was delayed more than a year due to the addition of a water line, relocation of utilities, poor soil conditions, unseasonably rainy winters, and an April to July moratorium due to cooper's hawk nesting season. 1306
