SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One person is dead and another person is facing life-threatening injuries after a pair of separate crashes involving Bird scooters Friday and Saturday.The first incident happened just before 9 p.m. Friday in Hillcrest. San Diego Police said a 42-year-old woman had been riding westbound in the 1200 block of University Ave. in a bike lane when, for unknown reasons, she overturned while on her Bird scooter and hit her head.The woman was taken to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries. Police say the woman was not wearing a helmet and had been drinking.In the second incident, a man was riding on a Bird scooter southbound in the 1400 block of Third Ave. when he was hit from behind by a vehicle just before 4 a.m., Chula Vista Police said.26-year-old Esteban Antonio Ramon Galindo died shortly after being transported to the UC San Diego Medical Center, according to police. It's not clear whether Ramon Galindo was wearing a helmet when he was hit.Police said the driver remained at the scene and has been cooperating with police. The cause of the crash was still under investigation Saturday. Investigators did not believe drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash. 1208

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — More than two dozen Little Italy restaurants are likely to become San Diego's first to install "parklets," which will allow expanded outdoor dining each day of the week. The work is expected to start Friday. A parklet is a sealed off portion of curbside parking spaces that would instead be reserved for restaurants to set up tables and serve people outside. On Friday, at least eight Little Italy restaurants will start installing the parklets, but that number could grow to more than 25 if the city approves the permits in time. The city is currently streamlining these kinds of permits for retailers and restaurants and waving fees. The idea is to give businesses more room to make money amid new social distancing restrictions that disallow indoor dining in restaurants. "It is vital, absolutely," said Paolo Tagliani, general manager of Salunto, a bakery restaurant on India Street. "We need fresh air, too."More than 100 restaurants in San Diego have applied for parklet permits. The city approved 48 of them on the first day it began processing the applications. Restaurants in the Gaslamp and North Park have also applied. Little Italy had already instituted an Al Fresco program, which closed India Street to the public on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays to allow outside dining. The parklets would allow outdoor dining daily. The Gaslamp Quarter Association has a similar program on Fifth Avenue from L Street to F Street. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police officers chased down two drivers in stolen cars, but only one man was arrested early Wednesday morning.According to San Diego Police, officers spotted a BMW that had just been stolen driving down Hotel Circle South in Mission Valley around 2 a.m. They followed the car, which appeared to be following another car, a black Dodge Charger.When officers tried to pull them over, both drivers sped off in different directions.Just when officers thought they lost the BMW, they found it in a Serra Mesa neighborhood. They moved in with their guns drawn and surrounded the car, but no one was inside.Officers eventually found the suspect hiding in a nearby shed and took him into custody.The driver of the Dodge Charger led officers towards Mission Valley, but that car was later found abandoned behind a Verizon store. 847

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One person died and two others were injured, and Coast Guard crews rescued 17 others after a mega yacht collided with a fishing vessel off the coast of Imperial Beach Friday night. The 332-foot yacht, Attessa IV, crashed into the 65-foot sportfisher vessel, Prowler, just before 8 p.m. about nine miles off the shore of Imperial Beach, according to the Coast Guard.The collision caused extensive damage to the right side of the Prowler.One man was airlifted to UCSD Hillcrest and died at the hospital, the Coast Guard confirmed. Two others were injured in the accident.RELATED: Fishing boat catches fire off coast of San Diego; 15 rescuedCoast Guard crews transferred 17 passengers from the damaged fishing boat back to San Diego. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Point Loma neighbors are rallying to save a beloved bike track - a track they've built with their own hands, but no permits. The track on Famosa and Nimitz Boulevards was threatened on Monday. “I rushed over here as quick as I could,” Darren Miller said.  “I stood in front of the tractor and said, “I’m sorry I can't let you keep doing this.”It’s still unclear who sent the bobcat to level the track. But - the land belongs to the San Diego Housing Commission.Miller is a parent of two boys and says he started building the track last March after coming across the empty land. He added the jumps and curves, thinking it would become a sort of secret playground.“I thought myself and a couple of other dads involved would have a small little track that or six or seven kids knew about. I had no idea that this many people loved it,” he said.Monday night several families showed up for a rally to save the park, expressing their affinity for the neighborhood track. “This is the most awesome-est place in the world,” eight-year-old Jude Hudson said, “So much fun because there are some bumps and curves.”Parents agree.“We don’t want this to go. This a good place to be and to exercise and to keep them off their phones." Jon Erb said. "You got parents that come out here on a daily basis, so you got chaperones down here and keeps them away from drugs.”When 10News asked what the deal with the empty land was, the San Diego Housing Commission sent the following statement:“An unauthorized and unpermitted makeshift bike park was set up by unknown individuals on the undeveloped property that is owned by the San Diego Housing Commission (SDHC) at the corner of Famosa and Nimitz Boulevard.Some of the no trespassing signs placed on the property by SDHC have been removed. Without sufficient insurance, SDHC, a public agency, cannot allow the property to be used as a bike park.The property is being planned to be developed as affordable housing.  We are pleased to be working with the Community Planning Group on the future development of affordable housing at this site.” 2143
