A wildfire is burning out of control north of Los Angeles, forcing thousands of residents to evacuate their homes, fire officials said. The Tick fire near Santa Clarita broke out Thursday and in just a few hours has burned about 3,700 acres, the Los Angeles County Fire Department said. The wind-driven blaze had only scorched a couple hundred acres when it quickly exploded to more than 3,000 acres and destroyed several structures, the fire department said. The cause was unknown. The Agua Dulce area, where the Tick Fire is burning, was part of the ongoing intentional power outages, said Lois Bruce, a spokesperson with Southern California Edison. The area was de-energized at about 8:50 am (local time) and blaze started at approximately 1:45pm, Bruce said.Wind speeds in the area are sustained at about 15 mph, with gusts of roughly 30 mph, the National Weather Service said.Mandatory evacuations were ordered for homes in the northern area of Los Angeles County and several shelters were opened. An animal protection nonprofit was scrambling to evacuate animals from their farm in Santa Clarita as a large plume of dark smoke was spotted near the property."Please support our efforts to activate our emergency plan! We can use all the help possible" the Gentle Barn wrote on Instagram. The group later wrote they were able to transfer all animals out of the barn after they were ordered to evacuate.Firefighters across California are battling several wildfires. In Northern California, 1497

An 11-year-old girl toting a loaded AR-15 assault weapon appeared Monday with her grandfather, who is supporting legislation that would allow visitors to Idaho who can legally possess firearms to carry a concealed handgun within city limits.Charles Nielsen addressed the committee that voted to send the legislation to the full House as Bailey Nielsen stood at his side with the weapon slung over her right shoulder, but did not say anything.“Bailey is carrying a loaded AR-15,” Charles Nielsen told lawmakers. “People live in fear, terrified of that which they do not understand. She’s been shooting since she was 5 years old. She got her first deer with this weapon at 9. She carries it responsibly. She knows how not to put her finger on the trigger. We live in fear in a society that is fed fear on a daily basis.”He said Bailey was an example of someone who could responsibly handle a gun, and lawmakers should extend that to non-residents.“When they come to Idaho, they should be able to carry concealed, because they carry responsibly,” he said. “They’re law-abiding citizens. It’s the criminal we have to worry about.”Republican Rep. Christy Zito, who is proposing the measure opposed by the three Democrats on the House State Affairs Committee, said the legislation is intended to clear up confusion about state gun laws. Backers also say it will give people the ability to defend themselves if needed.Idaho residents 18 and older are allowed to carry a concealed handgun within city limits in Idaho without a permit or training following a new law that went into place last summer. The legislation would extend that to any legal resident of the United States or a U.S. armed services member.“I stand here before you today as a mother and grandmother who has had to use a firearm to defend their child,” Zito said. She said two men once approached her vehicle with her daughter inside.“Even though I didn’t have to pull the trigger, just the fact that they could see it, and they knew that I had it, was the determining factor,” Zito said.Opponents say allowing teenagers to carry a concealed weapon without any required training within city limits is a bad idea and could lead to shootings. If the bill becomes law, Idaho would be among a handful of states that allow that type of concealed carry.“The vast majority of states require that a person get a permit before carrying a concealed gun in public,” said Diana David of Moms Demand Action, an organization that seeks public safety measures to protect people from gun violence. “That’s a common-sense policy.”(Photo & story courtesy: Keith Ridler, Associated Press) 2645

An 18-year veteran of the Detroit Police Department has died after being involved in a shooting Wednesday on Detroit's west side."Today is a tragic day for the Detroit police family," Detroit Police Chief James Craig said while addressing media outside of Sinai-Grace Hospital. Two police officers from Detroit's 12th Precinct were shot when responding to a report of a home invasion.Craig said that once officers arrived on scene, occupants in the home began frantically running out of the home because of a suspect inside the home with a high-powered rifle.Additional officers were called and four total officers made entry into the home in search of the suspect. While clearing the top floor of the home, officers did not locate the suspect. As they were heading down the stairs of the home, the suspect began to open fire on the officers. One officer, a three-year veteran on the force, was shot in his left leg. An 18-year veteran on the force sustained a single gunshot wound to his neck. He died from his injuries at Sinai-Grace Hospital. Police say the suspect is now in custody. 1099

A Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, neighborhood had plenty to talk about Monday morning!A large gator was found in a swimming pool at a home in the Marlwood Estates community on Graemoor Terrace, and had to be removed.Video from a neighbor shows a trapper hauling the huge reptile out of the pool and dragging it across the lawn. It's unclear how the gator got into the fenced yard, or how big it is.Vanessa Schultz said she was walking her kids to the bus stop around 7:15 a.m. Monday when she was told a large alligator was in her neighbor's pool. "It was big, really big," said Schultz, who captured images of the alligator. "I was totally in panic. When I saw the alligator I was scared."Schultz said she’s lived in Marlwood Estates for three years and has only seen a gator there once before. She said the an alligator was spotted in a lake last year behind her property.Schultz, a mother of three, thinks the gator in the pool was likely 9 feet long and over 300 pounds."It totally concerns me. So now I’m scared and I don’t want to leave my kids outside playing in the backyard," said Schultz. "I also need to check the pool and check before going outside the house."The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said the gator was 9 feet long, and was relocated to a farm."It concerns me. I don’t feel protected anymore," Schultz said. 1358
