CA?ON CITY, Co. -- The Royal Gorge Bridge and Park has been a place providing natural beauty and adrenaline rushing rides for 91 years.“It’s history,” said Chad Harris, who works at the admissions desk. “It’s one of the most iconic places in the United States, and I feel honored to work here.” Harris said the park has been a special part of his life. He was an intern at the park several years ago and then came back to work full-time.“My family worked here, my brother, my sister my mom,” Harris said. “I wanted to come back to this place and have a career here.” But seven years ago, Harris watched decades of memories go up in flames. The Royal Gorge Bridge and Park was destroyed by a wildfire. The bridge was nearly all that was left.The heartbreak of the fire—only preparing Harris and his team for the challenges that COVID-19 would bring.“I honestly thought the fire was the worst thing that could happen to us,” said Peggy Gair, who manages public relations for the park.Gair has been with the park for more than 20 years and said the virus was a new strain of devastation.“Never in my wildest dreams did I think we’d be closed for that many weeks, the two and a half months that we were,” Gair said. She said the fire was different—the park had insurance and was prepared to rebuild. No one could have prepared them for the pandemic.Just before the pandemic hit, employees spent dozens of hours and thousands of dollars hiring 30 new employees. Days later, they had to let everyone go, and now, the process to rehire is more complicated than ever before.Gair is signed up for a new way to find workers: a live, virtual job fair. She’s hoping to fill dozens of open positions around the park. Some of those jobs have been available since last year, and now, Gair believes the extra 0 a week in unemployment benefits is playing a role in keeping people from applying.“There’s jobs available,” Gair said. “People aren’t excited to go back to work. CHICAGO — Millions of frontline healthcare workers are rolling up their sleeves for the first of a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine. First out is Pfizer’s vaccine, and now, an FDA panel has recommended Moderna’s vaccine for emergency use authorization. The available Pfizer shot requires a complex and precise procedure for it to work.Before the needle even breaks the skin, a strict protocol must be followed precisely.“We're going to put it take it from the negative 80 ultra-low storage and we're gonna defrost it to refrigerator temperatures,” explained Erin Shaughnessy, director of pharmacy at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. “That's gonna give us five days of stability for the vaccine.”It’s like something out of Mission Impossible.“We installed additional security cameras and we have additional security protocols,” said Shaughnessy.She’s charged with ensuring the vaccine is securely handled and properly prepped before it’s injected.“We don't want to risk wasting any of the drugs,” she said. “The stuff is liquid gold right now.”That liquid gold must be stored at 80 below zero, in a secure location that only a few pharmacists have access to.“We have to take it out of the ultra-low freezer and move it to a refrigerator just to thaw for three hours.”Once thawed, it cannot be re-stored.“You can't put the medication back into the freezer,” said Shaughnessy. “Once inside, you have to use it or you're going to lose it. It's gonna have a five-day refrigerated expiration.”Pfizer’s vaccine protocol also requires the vaccine to be protected from UV light and the dilution must be gently inverted exactly 10 times. Shaken too hard, says Shaughnessy, and it could go bad.“It's very, very specific," she explained.That’s when the clock starts ticking.“Once they're thawed and reconstituted, basically diluted down to make the actual doses, then that's when we have six hours on the clock going from that dilution point into someone's arm,” said Luke Hvass, a clinical pharmacist at Rush.Each dose is recorded and logged. It’s a symphony of procedures that must come together like clockwork.“It's a lift for a lot of hospitals, a lot of organizations, but I think it's a challenge everybody is ready to rise to because everyone is so excited about getting this vaccine process started,” said Shaughnessy.The Department of Health and Human Services has expanded the scope of who can act as vaccinators. (KGTV) — Authorities have identified the woman found stabbed to death on a North County trail.San Diego County Medical Examiner identified the woman as 68-year-old Lisa Thorborg of Carlsbad. Thorborg was found fatally stabbed on the Hosp Grove trail on Monday, Carlsbad Police say.Police believe the stabbing occurred between about 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., before her body was found by a passerby who called police around 11:30 a.m.RELATED: Carlsbad police: Woman found dead on hiking trail was stabbed to deathA tipster led investigators to identify a suspect as white or Hispanic, 5 feet 10 inches to 6 feet 3 inches tall, with a husky build and a tan complexion with dark hair.
