BRISTOL, Wis. -- For a fruit farmer who knew little about growing flowers, the pandemic was the perfect nudge to try something new. So, he plowed over his strawberry fields to plant a patch of sunshine and it’s grown beyond his wildest dreams.Scott Thompson’s family has been farming strawberries in Bristol, Wisconsin, for generations.“We've been around for a just about 100 years.”As the general manager of Thompson Strawberry Farms, he says they’ve adapted over time starting with apples and strawberries at first.“We've kind of morphed over the years where we have raspberries and pumpkins as well.”But this year, the pick-your-own farm traded the sweet fruits for something more picturesque.“This year is our first crack at pick your own sunflowers,” said Thompson.Even though Thompson knew very little about the bright yellow flower, he started out slow, until the pandemic hit and then had a thought.“This might be something that people might be really interested in. And so, I started planting. I did a small four-acre field then another four acres, then 10 acres. So, it just kind of grew, grew, grew.”He ended up planting not hundreds or thousands, but 2.2 million sunflower seeds across 22 acres of fields.“Having sunflowers is cool, but having a lot of sunflowers, that's really cool,” he said. For visitors like Sarah Akers and her 2-year-old son Xavier, it’s an eye-popping treat.“When they said how big it was, this is not what I was expecting,” said Akers. “It definitely is more impressive than what it sounds like when you just read about it.”It’s also a paradise for pollinators. Bees buzz from flower to flower. And with 15 fields, Thompson says it’s a great outing during the pandemic.“It's a perfectly natural social distancing activity,” said Thompson. The massive blooms have attracted visitors from all over the country. Debbie Berdinski, visiting from Alabama, was enthralled.“I love it. I think it's beautiful,” she said. And the decision to swap out strawberries for sunflowers has unexpectedly turned Thompson’s farm into his very own golden field of dreams.“You could really just go out and have a fun time and kind of forget about reality for a little bit,” he said. “Just enjoy being out here in this sea of yellow flowers.”And in a year like 2020, a little sunshine goes a long way. 2320

Britain's big Brexit decision was delayed on Monday, as Prime Minister Theresa May pulled the plug on Tuesday's parliamentary vote on her deal for the country to leave the European Union. The decision was taken in the face of predictions she would suffer a disastrous defeat that could threaten to end her premiership and topple the government.May told the UK House of Commons that she had listened "very carefully to what has been said in this chamber and out of it," which was met by laughter and jeering by members of parliament."It is clear that while there is broad support for many of the key aspects of the deal, on one issue -- the Northern Ireland backstop, there remains widespread and deep concern," May said in the statement. The embattled British leader said that if the vote were to go ahead Tuesday as planned, "it would be rejected by a significant margin.""We will therefore defer the vote scheduled for tomorrow and not proceed to divide the house at this time," May added. The Prime Minister said she had hoped changes secured to the backstop to avoid being trapped in it indefinitely would be enough for MPs but said she will now travel to meet representatives of other EU states to seek further assurances. May is due to attend a meeting of European leaders on Saturday."I spoke to a number of EU leaders over the weekend and in advance of the European Council, I will go to see my counterparts in other member states and the leadership of the Council and the Commission. I will discuss with them the clear concerns that this House has expressed," May explained. The leader of the House, Andrea Leadsom, will follow the prime minister's statement followed by Brexit Secretary, Steve Barclay.UK parliamentarians were supposed to be given the opportunity to approve or reject the deal in the so-called "meaningful vote" in the House of Commons on Tuesday evening. In recent weeks, May had been trying to win support for her agreement but with a high number of her own Conservative Party MPs opposed to it, she didn't appear to be having much success. On Sunday, May warned that failure to support her Brexit deal could risk the UK canceling Brexit and lead to Jeremy Corbyn, leader of the opposition Labour party, "getting his hands on power.""I'm not somebody who is normally a doom-monger, but I genuinely am concerned that we would see greater division and greater uncertainty," the British leader added. The uncertainty over the future of Brexit has caused sterling to plummet to its weakest level in a year and a half. There was confusion and anger as May hit the pause button on the vote. EU Parliament chief Brexit negotiator Guy Verhofstadt expressed his frustration at the vote stalling in a post on Twitter."This delay will further aggravate the uncertainty for people & businesses. It's time they make up their mind!" he wrote. The European Commission had earlier ruled out any further Brexit discussions, saying "we have an agreement on the table which was endorsed by the European Council... as President (Jean-Claude) Juncker said, this deal is the best and only deal possible. We will not renegotiate."Back in Westminster, Conservative MP James Duddridge vowed to fight a delay in the vote."The PM does not get to pull a vote. The House will have to vote to pull a vote. I will oppose. We need to see this deal off once and for all," Duddridge wrote on Twitter.Earlier on Monday, the EU's top court ruled that Britain could unilaterally halt the formal process of leaving the bloc next year. The European Court of Justice sided with the advice of its top legal officer, who declared last week that the UK has the power to withdraw its notification to leave under Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty, without the agreement of other member states. But May's government dismissed the ruling, with Environment Secretary Michael Gove telling the BBC that the UK will divorce the bloc regardless of the ECJ decision."We voted very clearly -- 17.4 million people sent a clear message that they wanted to leave the European Union," said Gove, a prominent Leave campaigner. "And that also means leaving the jurisdiction of the European Court of Justice," he said.The-CNN-Wire 4197

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The entire force of the Buffalo Police Emergency Response Team has resigned as of Friday afternoon in support of the two officers who were suspended without pay following an incident in Niagara Square on Thursday. The 57 officers have not resigned from the department and will keep their jobs. They have only resigned from their roles on the emergency response team. The Niagra Square incident involved a 75-year-old man, Martin Gugino, being shoved by officers. He fell to the ground and was transported to Erie County Medical Center, where he was listed in serious condition.A Buffalo PBA representative tells WKBW anchor Hannah Buehler "these officers were simply following orders given by DPC Joe Gramaglia to clear the Square."THREAD: I am told it is the ENTIRE Emergency Reaponse team. The Union tells me it fully understands their “disgust” “These officers were simply following orders given by DPC Joe Gramaglia to clear the Square” @wkbw— Hannah Buehler (@HannahBuehler) June 5, 2020 Two of the officers who resigned later said that they didn’t step away from their roles as a “show of support.” Instead they say they resigned because they don’t feel they have legal protection from the city. One of the officers said it's likely many did resign as a show of support, but for many others, "that's not true."WKBW obtained a copy of the email sent by Buffalo Police Benevolent Association President John Evans, indicating the PBA would no longer pay for the legal defense of members of the ERT or SWAT teams in relation to the protests. 1566

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Vice President Mike Pence insisted schools should reopen to in-person instruction for students in a visit to Louisiana. The state has reemerged as one of the nation's hot spots for the coronavirus only months after signs pointed to a successful outbreak response. The Republican vice president appeared at Louisiana State University with Democratic Gov. John Bel Edwards and other state leaders. Pence described the nation as "in a much better position today to deal with the pandemic" even as virus cases surge across much of the country. Louisiana isn't taking the wide-open approach sought by Pence. Schools are planning a mix of online and in-person learning this fall. 705
