A crash near Knoxville, Tennessee, spilled more than 17 tons of M&M's onto an interstate ramp.Police said they responded to the tractor-trailer crash on the Interstate 40 east exit ramp around 5:32 a.m. Friday.Candy company Mars Wrigley said the truck was transporting the candy from a manufacturing plant in Cleveland, Tennessee. Police believe that the driver of the tractor-trailer, whom they did not name, swerved to miss hitting something on the exit ramp. The truck then plowed into a ditch and hit the concrete barrier on the left shoulder before rolling onto its passenger side. It came to rest after it clipped a second tractor-trailer that was parked on the shoulder. The Knoxville Fire Department responded because crews had to remove the driver from the cab of the overturned truck. CNN has reached out to the driver's trucking company, KLLM Transport Services, for comment but has not received a response.Police said the driver of the candy truck was transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center for treatment for injuries "that were not believed to be serious in nature."Although the M&M's appear to have been in their packaging, that doesn't mean they're being salvaged."Due to our strict quality and food safety protocols, none of the product has been salvaged," Caitlin Kemper, Mars Wrigley spokesperson, told CNN. 1362

A group of scientists have discovered 280-million-year-old fossil tracks in a remote area of the Grand Canyon that predate the the appearance of the earliest dinosaurs, according to a press release from the Grand Canyon National Park. According to the press release, an international team of paleontologists discovered "extremely well-preserved trackways of primitive tetrapods (four-footed animals) which inhabited an ancient desert environment."Paleontologists recognized the fossil tracks and say they were produced by a "long-extinct relative of very early reptiles... of extinct tetrapods known as diadectomorphs, a primitive group that possessed characteristics of both amphibians and reptiles."The characteristics of the newly discovered tracks suggest the creature that made the prints walked on all four legs, with each foot containing five "clawless digits.""Although the actual track maker for the Grand Canyon footprints may never be known, the Grand Canyon trackways preserve the travel of a very early terrestrial vertebrate," the press release stated. 1079

A bill that will give many Americans a ,200 check in the upcoming days finally got the green light from the US Senate late Wednesday after days of wrangling between the two parties. All 96 senators present voted in favor of the legislation, marking a coveted moment of bipartisanship in Washington. "We were inspired by what was going on around the country," Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said. "This is a proud moment for the United States Senate and the country."While both parties generally agreed that a one-time check should be sent to a majority of Americans, details on just how many Americans should receive a check, on how much unemployment insurance should be awarded and who would oversee stimulus for businesses were up for debate. The two sides came to an understanding late Tuesday, but some Senate members opposed some of the unemployment provisions. Now the bill goes to the House, which has been holding pro forma sessions amid the spread of coronavirus. The question is whether any members of the House will force a full vote, which could cause the bill to be delayed for several more days as House members would need to return to Washington. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he will sign the bill into law as soon as Congress sends it to him. The urgently needed bipartisan legislation is the largest economic rescue measure in the country’s history. The last stimulus bill like this was passed during the 2008 financial crisis and amounted to 0 billion.Under the COVID-19 measure, American adults making less than ,000 a year would receive ,200 checks as well as 0 per child to help fill in the gaps for those without a steady income during the crisis. The bill would also create a 7 billion loan program for small businesses. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said small business owners could receive interest free loans. The legislation would also establish a 0 billion lending fund for industries, cities and states. A Treasury Department special inspector general would be appointed to scrutinize the lending decisions and detect any abusive or fraudulent behavior.Schumer said an additional 0 billion will be injected into the American healthcare systems to provide desperately needed medical supplies, like ventilators, respirators, personal protective equipment and beds. About 0 billion will be sent to state and local governments, who are in the front lines of the pandemic. 2465

WINNETKA, Ill. – Nearly 27 million American adults have low vision or blindness. As baby boomers age, experts expect a major one in three will experience vision loss, a condition linked to depression. It’s a tough transition leaving many in despair. In recent years, Illinois resident Richard Englund’s vision began fading. “It's a whole new world. You know that you're dealing with something you've never dealt with before,” said Englund. Diagnosed with macular degeneration at 47, the world he knew lost focus. He is now legally blind. “The worst thing that you've finally come to terms with is you can't drive anymore,” said Englund. For Angie, a retired nurse, a third failed corneal transplant meant losing her sight but not her sense of humor. “Not being able to see faces. I mean right now all you guys look like Brad Pitt,” said Angie. But it took time for her to come to terms with it. “I felt like I was walking dead,” said Angie. “Somebody hit me in the stomach and it just was wrong.” Loss of mobility and independence is difficult and statistically, people with visual impairment or blindness have a 200 percent increase in the risk of clinical depression. As baby boomers age, the number of Americans with low vision is expected to skyrocket from 2.9 million in 2010 to 5 million in 2030. The key, say public health officials, is to reach out for help early. For the last century, Hadley, a non-profit organization has assisted with the scary transition of losing sight. “We basically teach people how to continue to live their lives,” said Julie Tye, Hadley’s executive director. Hadley is providing online resources, support and in-person consultation. All of it is free of cost. “Maybe it's something as simple as contrast, maybe it's something as simple as using their smartphone to magnify what they're reading,” said Tye. Englund says relearning independence is tough at any age, but not impossible. “I am not going to let the fact that I can't see keep me from doing anything. I can do anything as long as I put my mind to it,” he said. Angie insists it’s just another phase of life. “You realize that you go on, you know, it's another journey you're on. You're going to do better, because you have to.” 2243
