SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Employees at Sovereign Health in Rancho San Diego tell 10News they have not been paid for weeks.Tracy Hydorn is one of those employees. She wiped away tears, thinking about her piling expenses."I haven't been able to send my son to his prom, buy his yearbook, get tires on my car," Hydorn said. She got emotional as she talked about being able to do "basic paying" of items.Hydorn works at the Sovereign Health facility on Steele Canyon Road. She said her paychecks are five weeks behind."The people that I work with are good people and they're working hard, but the corporation doesn't care at all," Hydorn said.She is not alone. The company has six locations across the country with about 500 employees. Eugene, a driver for Sovereign Health in Florida, said his paychecks are weeks late. He was forced to take on another job as an Uber driver to make money. "I Uber'ed until 5:30 in the morning... and still didn't make enough money to pay my rent," Eugene said.A spokesperson for Sovereign Health told Team 10 payroll issues have been going on throughout the company for six weeks due to a transition to a new vendor. He would not say who that vendor was. They are hoping the situation will be taken care of by early next week and apologized to its employees. Hydorn is trying to hang on, but she is tired of the company's excuses."If anything they had said had been genuine or you could believe it, it would be easier to deal with," she said.  1496

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Hawaii recently passed a ban on sunscreens containing certain chemicals deemed harmful to their coral reefs.With more than 70 miles of coastline in San Diego County, the question of whether a similar ban could affect our region has been brought to light.The chemicals in question are oxybenzone or octinoxate, both of which are found in many commonly purchased sunscreens.RELATED: What ingredients to avoid, look for in reef-safe sunscreensA study by the Haereticus Environmental Laboratory found the chemicals seep into young coral and lead to coral bleaching, which occurs when an increase in sea temperatures kills the algae that grow inside coral, turning reefs white. This eliminates other nutrients that sustain marine life.Researchers say 14,000 tons of sunscreen lotion gets into reefs around the world every year.We asked our 10News Facebook fans how they would feel about a similar ban in California. At press time, 81 percent said they would support similar legislation in our state:When asked for comment regarding a similar California ban, the Governor's Office told 10News they do not comment on any potential legislation and there is currently no bill in the works.While San Diego doesn't have a robust coral ecosystem, the region is home to scenic coastlines that draw tourists from all over the world and off-shore fishing that fisherman enjoy just the same.RELATED: Hawaii moves to ban certain sunscreens to save coral reefs"The physical block more hitting and going away, the more chemical blockers are causing a chemical reaction," Mark Vierra, a dermatologist in Rancho Bernardo, told 10News. "You think about the old surfer with the white on the nose, people didn't always love that but now they're micronized, so I have a physical block on now and it doesn't look totally white."There are no studies on how sunscreens affect San Diego's coastline, which is home more to kelp forests than coral reefs. For now, Vierra suggests picking one and sticking with it."I always want patients to pick one that they like and they'll use consistently and reapply," Vierra said. "That's probably more important than which individual one you pick." 2214

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Homeless encampments have moved into the site of previous fires in University heights, sparking more fire concerns.March 2018. Amid a firefight along Highway 163, bystanders on the Vermont Street Bridge looking on soon after the flames spark. Fire crews would put out that fire without any major damage. Months later, a smaller fire erupted in the same area, near another encampment. Marybeth Chruden and the University Heights Community Association organized a petition drive, leading the San Diego City Council to approve more than a million dollars for canyon abatements across the city, including one at the University Heights site in July.In the past few weeks, that site looked a lot different."Shocked, but in a way, not surprised," said Chruden.Chruden's group posted photos on their Facebook page of homeless encampments and the surrounding mess."It shows they are very comfortable, out in the open ... We see people smoking and little campfires down there. The fire danger still high with dry materials in that canyon," said Chruden.Chruden says after several requests on the city's 'Get It Done' app, crews cleared out the area Wednesday morning, except for one mattress. The problem? She expects the homeless to move back in soon."Maybe tonight, in three days or four days. Within a week, something will be going on down there," said Chruden.Chruden believes regular visits to the area by city crews are needed, possibly twice a month. 10news reached out to Councilmember Chris Ward's office for a comment and are waiting to hear back. 1574

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - For comic, movie, and science-fiction fanatics, getting to Comic-Con is a dream come true.For one San Diego military family, it was extra special because experiencing it as a family was never guaranteed. "I actually brought Mason and Annabelle when he was on deployment to Syria, and he was kind of bummed he wasn't coming," said Lindsey Stacy, referring to her husband Kenton.It was on that deployment when Kenton, a Navy EOD Tech, was critically injured by an improvised explosive device (IED). He was given just a two percent chance of survival but ultimately overcame the odds. "He's just made so many miraculous recoveries, and I'm praying there's more to come," said Lindsey.While Kenton's story has inspired thousands around the world, few know of his love for all things cartoons and superheroes. Their firstborn Logan was named after X-Men's Wolverine. "I always said he's this big tough guy but he's like a comic book and Star Wars nerd underneath!"So Lindsey put out the call for help to bring Kenton to Comic-Con."People were just so willing to help make this dream come true for Kenton," she said. Both Comic-Con International and the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund stepped up to provide the family and Kenton's caregivers with four-day badges. The convention says it's dedicated to serving people of all abilities; providing a rest area, loaning out wheelchairs, and providing volunteer sign language interpreters for deaf guests. "Things are different now, and we can't be out as long, and we just tailor it to his needs, but we're just so happy to be here and have him home with us and be able to actually just reintegrate our lives back together again," said Lindsey. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Hate crimes throughout San Diego County and across the state are rising at an alarming rate, according to new reports.Hate crimes between 2015 and 2017 rose 27 percent in San Diego County alone, a new report published in Law Enforcement Quarterly states.Statewide, hate crimes rose 44 percent between 2014 and 2017.A report from California’s Attorney General shows that San Diego County saw 95 hate crime incidents in 2017. That compared with 84 hate crimes countywide in 2016 and 72 in 2015.According to documents, anti-Semitic hate crime rose nearly 27 percent from 2016 to 2017 statewide. Hate crimes involving racial bias increased 16 percent within the same amount of time.The statistics come amid recent tragedies around the country, including a shooting at a synagogue in Pittsburgh Saturday that left 11 people dead. RELATED: Sign outside UCSD Jewish student center defacedThe rise in hate crimes also coincide with recent events in San Diego.
