BROOKLYN, N.Y. – At Canarsie Educational Campus in Brooklyn, the lesson plan was switched up for a day. Instead of learning history, English or math, students learned about what being in a gang is like. And, they learned from those who know that world best. “Let me ask y’all a question, what today is promoting the violence amongst y’all?” asked Kareem Nelson in front of a dozen students inside a classroom.Nelson was born and mostly raised in Harlem. He’s a former member of a street gang known as “The Black Mafia.”“I started selling crack cocaine at 12 years old,” said Nelson. “I was a follower. I had low self-esteem, so I did the things I thought would help me fit in.”At the tender age of 12, Nelson told students he thought gang life offered glory, friendship and some protection. He ultimately would learn the hard way, none of that was true.“I went to Baltimore, thought I was the toughest guy in the world, and I got shot,” Nelson explained to students. That’s what put him in a wheelchair. He was paralyzed and lost half a lung. However, eventually it was that moment and another gang-related near death experience that helped him give up gang life. “I escaped with my life and from that night on, I said ‘I don’t want kids to have to go through what I went through,’” Nelson explained.Seven years ago, Nelson founded 1343

CANTON, Ohio — A 25-year-old Ohio woman has been charged for allegedly starving two dogs locked in a cage, causing one of the animals to eat the other after it died, according to court records.Court records state that on or about April 5, Jessica J. Swinehart locked a beagle in a cage with a German shepherd-mix and starved the animals. When the beagle died, the other dog ate it to survive. When authorities found the German shepherd, it appeared to have lost nearly two-thirds of its body weight. It was still locked in the cage with the decaying beagle. An arrest warrant was filed April 8 and she was later arrested.Swinehart has been charged with two counts of prohibitions concerning companion animals, a fifth-degree felony.A future court date is pending. 779

AURORA, Ind. — Twenty students and two drivers were injured in a crash involving a school bus and a garbage truck, according to Indiana State Police and hospital officials. The South Dearborn Community School Corporation bus was headed eastbound on State Route 350 just before 8 a.m. when it collided with a stationary Rumpke garbage truck near Mount Sinai Road, Indiana State Police Sgt. Stephen Wheeles said.Seventh-grader Dakota Jones was sitting near the front of the bus when it crashed."All I saw was dust. I heard noises, I heard people screaming and I went to the back of the bus, just trying to get away from this," he said. "And then, people were just — total panic. I was in shock."Twenty students aboard the bus at the time were injured, according to Dr. Richard Cardosi, medical director of Highpoint Health. The bus driver and the Rumpke driver were also injured, hospital officials said. None of the injuries were life-threatening. Most of the injured were treated at Highpoint Health in Lawrenceburg. Two people were transferred to Cincinnati hospitals, including one 13-year-old brought to Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. The Rumpke driver, who was not in the truck at the time of the crash, was also taken to a hospital because he was injured by debris, according to Rumpke spokeswoman Molly Yeager. Four students on the bus at the time of the crash were transferred to another bus and taken to school, Wheeles said. A parent picked up one of those students at the school and took them to a hospital. Superintendent Eric Lows said most of the students on board attend South Dearborn Middle and High Schools. Students on the bus included those going to: St. John Lutheran School and St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception, Moores Hill Elementary and the South Dearborn campus, which includes Aurora Elementary School, South Dearborn Middle School and South Dearborn High School, Lows said.Of the students injured, most were seventh- through ninth-graders. One sixth-grader and one high school junior were also injured. Cardosi said Highpoint normally relies on University of Cincinnati Medical Center and Children's Hospital for severe trauma cases. However, a medical helicopter that was called was unable to fly due to weather."You train for these kind of situations and you hope they never really occur, and here it was unfolding before our eyes," he said.Cardosi said he anticipated all patients remaining at Highpoint Wednesday afternoon would be able to go home, and wouldn't need to be transferred to another hospital.Wheeles and Lows gave updates on the crash at a noon press conference. Watch the full conference below: The bus, a 2003 Thomas Built, has been in operation in the school district since November 2013, according to an Indiana State Police report. The bus has had all of its inspections (Indiana state law requires all buses older than 12 years old to be inspected twice a year), and the bus has had no major issues over the past five and a half years, reports say.Wheeles said Indiana State Police are leading the investigation into the crash. It will take some time for crash reconstructionists to determine why the bus driver didn't see the truck, he said.Lows said the bus driver is a veteran employee who is "shouldering a lot of this burden on himself."Christa Armbruster had two nephews on the bus. She said she knows the man behind the wheel is "an excellent driver" who's been driving the school bus since she was in kindergarten"He's real cautious, he's real slow," she said. 3549

BRUNSWICK, Ga. (AP) — A Georgia judge has scheduled a court hearing next week for three men charged with murder in the fatal shooting of Ahmaud Arbery. The clerk's office for Glynn County Magistrate Court confirmed Wednesday that Judge Wallace E. Harrell has set a preliminary hearing for June 4. Arbery was fatally shot Feb. 23 when a white father and son armed themselves and pursued the 25-year-old black man after they spotted him running in their neighborhood. More than two months passed before Gregory McMichael and his son, Travis McMichael, were charged with felony murder and aggravated assault. One of the McMichaels' neighbors, William "Roddie" Bryan Jr., was charged in the case last week.  720

Bob and Shirley Hansen were on a fishing trip when they woke up at 3 a.m. Monday to the sound of someone beating on the side of their boat.Bob looked over the side and saw five people in their underwear, he told CNN affiliate KEYT-TV. Then he saw another boat in the distance, fully engulfed in flames."Flames probably 30 feet high. It was totally gone," he said. The first thing he did was call the Coast Guard, he said. The 75-foot commercial diving boat, called the Conception, caught fire Labor Day off the coast of Santa Cruz Island in Southern California. The Hansens were able to rescue the five crew members who made their way to their boat. Eight people have been found dead so far, and 26 are missing.Shirley said some of the rescued crew members told them about the moments on the boat before the fire. One said that a 17-year-old girl on the Conception was celebrating her birthday with her parents, she said."It was such a hopeless, helpless feeling to watch that boat burn and know there were only five people at our boat and there was nothing we could do," she said. She also said the five people didn't have any form of communication on them -- no keys or phones -- and she hopes they get plenty of help.Bob told KEYT he doesn't feel he deserves to be called a hero."I was just a guy there in that place. I would hope that anybody would do the same thing," Bob said, adding that he wishes he could have saved everyone on board the Conception. 1467
