SAN MARCOS, Calif. (KGTV) - Students at Cal State-San Marcos will spend time Tuesday and Thursday this week painting as a way to process their emotions in the wake of the school shooting in Parkland, Florida.They're making a pair of murals, in conjunction with the Art Miles Project.One mural features 17 peace signs, each with the name of one of the victims of the shooting. The other features a dove with 17 rays of color coming out of it, also honoring the victims.Organizers say it's their way to let the victims know they have support from all over. It also helps the people who are painting sort through their own emotions and grief."I see the healing power that it has," says Joanne Tawfilis, the Director of the Art Miles Project, which organizes the murals.She's been doing murals like this for 20 years. Every time there is a major shooting or natural disaster, she organizes a way for people to paint."It makes me feel good," she says. "But it also makes me feel sad that we’re in a state in the world that this violence continues."Over the last 20 years, the Art Miles Project has been involved in painting 5,000 murals in over 100 countries. All of the materials are donated.In addition to the two murals that students will paint at Cal State-San Marcos, Tawfilis says the public is invited to the Muramid Museum and Art Center this weekend to paint more. 1391

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — San Francisco Bay Area police say two teens have admitted to starting a grass fire that scarred an iconic hillside amid a scorching heatwave and dangerous fire conditions. South San Francisco police said a brush fire spotted Friday around noon on “Sign Hill” grew quickly due to hot and windy conditions. Crews contained the fire hours later with no injuries and no structures lost but residents were temporarily displaced. Officials say an alert resident spotted two teen boys, ages 14 and 16, leaving the area where the fire started.It has been a disastrous wildfire season in California. 619

SANTEE, Calif. (KGTV) - A local woman says her heart stopped when she saw what someone nearly sat on at a popular trail in Santee.Angie Haake was just beginning her usual dog walk last Thursday morning near the entrance of Walker Preserve Trail, when she noticed two upset women on the phone talking to deputies.  Haake asked them what was going on and they showed her a razor blade on the bench."I was shocked when it saw it. Obviously whoever put it there wanted someone to sit down and slice the back of their thighs. It's cruel and hateful," said Haake.The discovery was not the first.  Another trail goer tells 10news about three weeks ago, she found a similar blade near another bench.  In November 2016, 10news spoke with a mother at Mast Park in Santee, who found dozens of tacks placed sharp-side up underneath leaves.10news reached out to deputies to find out how many reports of similar cases there have been on the trail, but have yet to hear back. 983

(AP) — An active-duty U.S. Air Force sergeant accused of killing a Northern California sheriff’s deputy in an ambush-style attack was a leader for a military base’s elite security force. Officials said Monday that Staff Sgt. Steven Carrillo was a team leader for the Phoenix Ravens that protects airfields at Travis Air Force Base. Carrillo has been arrested on suspicion of fatally shooting Santa Cruz sheriff’s sergeant Damon Gutzwiller on Saturday afternoon in Ben Lomond, an unincorporated area near Santa Cruz. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Two girls who were lost in a dense Northern California forest for nearly two days say they survived frigid nights by huddling under a tree branch and a huckleberry bush and by thinking "happy thoughts."Leia Carrico, 8, and her 5-year-old sister Caroline, said in an interview Monday they went on a hike last Friday past a marker that their parents told them not to pass because they wanted an adventure but lost their way home."I just wanted a little more adventure, I said to go a little farther," Caroline said.Leia said her sister cried the entire first night and she told her to think happy thoughts as they huddled under a tree branch close to the ground."I thought of going to the park with mommy and daddy. I thought of going to the ocean. I thought of everything I remembered, but it didn't work," Caroline said.Leia kept watch both nights and thought about the good memories from a family vacation to Monterey, California, she said.She said she also remembered what she learned from watching movies of people surviving in the wilderness, going camping every summer and the training with their local 4-H club. She also thought of her father's advice to stay put if she ever got lost."I knew dad would find us eventually," she said.Two volunteer firefighters who joined hundreds looking for the sisters found them Sunday in a wooded area about 1? miles (2.3 kilometers) from their home in the small community of Benbow, about 200 miles (320 kilometers) northwest of Sacramento.Delbert Chumley, a Piercy volunteer firefighter, said he and fellow volunteer firefighter, Abram Hill, found the girls after calling out their names during a long hike through rugged terrain."I thought we heard someone say 'dad' and so then we called out again and they said yes we are right here," Chumley said.The girls' mother, Misty Carrico, said she is trying not to punish them."They might have wandered off but they stuck together and they pulled themselves through," she said.
