BEIJING, June 10 (Xinhua) -- China hopes the United States will take an objective, rational and just view towards China's national defense policy and the development of its armed forces, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang here on Thursday.Qin's comment came in response to a question on China's attitude towards a U.S. military officer's remarks on China's military development.The Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen said in a speech to the Asia Society's annual dinner that he was now "genuinely concerned" about "the gap as wide as what seems to be forming between China's stated intent and its military programs."Responding to the remarks, Qin urged the U.S. side to do more to build military relations with China, rather than harming them, so to ensure regional peace, stability and security.Qin said the sole purpose of China's defense policy is self-defense and its military is being developed in a peaceful way.China's development will not pose a threat to any country and anyone, he stressed, adding "We will not threaten and invade others."China opposes hegemonism, he said. BEIJING, June 29 (Xinhua) -- The number of criminal explosion cases as well as gun crimes in China dropped by 13.4 and 33.1 percent year on year, respectively, in the first five months of 2010, Ministry of Public Security said in a statement Monday.The statement, however, did not provide exact numbers.Police nationwide seized over 351 tonnes of explosives, 1.7 million detonators, 15,000 guns, 1.84 million bullets, 300,000 imitation guns and 170,000 illegal knives since the launching of a national crackdown on illegal explosive and guns, the statement said.The widespread publicity about the police crackdown apparently paid off with 3,099 tips received from the public which led to the solving of 1,538 cases and the arrest of 2,065 suspects, said the statement.Those who provided information to police were rewarded with 960,000 yuan (about 141,000 U.S. dollars) in total, it said.

TAIYUAN/HARBIN, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- The death toll in an explosion at a coal mine in Linfen City of north China's Shanxi Province early Saturday has risen to 17 after another two bodies were found, local authorities said.The blast at Liugou Coal Mine of Yicheng County also left 104 persons injured, seven of them seriously, as of 11 p.m. Saturday, said Wang Jianshe, head of the county's People's Hospital, where all the injured were admitted.All the injured are in stable condition, Wang said.Basic search and rescue work is over, said a senior official of Yangquan Coal Industry (Group) Co. Ltd, which owns the mine. The official said that the blast took place in the dormitory area, where most of buildings were destroyed by the powerful explosion.A miner surnamed Zhang told Xinhua that families of many miners had come to live here because the children were currently on their summer vacation.But officials so far have not disclosed how many children and women had died during the accident.Zhang said he saw a couple died after huge stones fell on them in a dormitory room.Initial investigation showed that the blast was caused by explosives hidden illegally in the area, and a suspect has been detained by the police, the official said.A further Investigation into the cause of the blast is underway.Also on Saturday, 24 people were trapped in a flooded coal mine in northeast China's Jixi City, Heilongjiang Province.The city government said the accident at Hengxinyuan Mine took place at around 5 p.m. Saturday.
