SEOUL, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and leaders of other Group of 20 (G20) members gathered here Friday to address the challenges to the ongoing global economic recovery and work out strategies to achieve strong, sustainable and balanced global growth.President Hu, who participated in the G20 summits in Washington in 2008, in London and Pittsburgh in 2009, and in Toronto last June, is expected to expound China's stand on the major issues to be discussed at the fifth meeting in the South Korean capital, according to Chinese officials.At the Seoul summit, the leaders will discuss the world economic situation, the "Framework for Strong, Sustainable and Balanced global growth," the reform of global financial institutions, the strengthening of financial regulations, a global financial safety net and development issues.Chinese President Hu Jintao attends the inauguration of the Group of 20 (G20) Summit in Seoul, capital of South Korea, Nov. 12, 2010."The G20 summit to be held in Seoul, South Korea, is the first one of its kind to be held in an emerging economy and in Asia, hence it is of great significance to the development of the G20 mechanism," President Hu said in a written interview with South Korean media last Tuesday.Hu said the Seoul summit should focus on the following issues:-- To continue to strengthen coordination of macro-economic policies using an "in-the-same-boat" spirit and mutually beneficial and win-win principles, and to send to the market positive signals that G20 members were unified in tackling the great challenges of the world economy so market confidence could rally and the momentum of the world economic recovery would be secured.-- To push forward the reforms of the international financial system, to strengthen supervision of the international financial market, and to increase the say and the representation of emerging and developing countries in international financial institutions.-- To push forward a solution to the unbalanced development between developed and developing countries and to provide political support to the realization of UN Millennium Development Goals.-- To oppose trade protectionism and to push forward the Doha Round of World Trade Organization talks to achieve comprehensive and balanced results and its development goals.The previous four G20 summits formulated measures to deal with the international financial crisis. The summits have played an important role in returning the world economy to growth, stabilizing international financial markets and ensuring the confidence of the public and business.When they met last June in Toronto, the G20 leaders agreed on the importance of safeguarding and strengthening the recovery while laying the foundation for strong, sustainable and balanced growth, and strengthening the financial systems.At the Seoul Summit, according to the host South Korea, the G20 will build on past agreements, while introducing new agenda items that support the same fundamental goals.The G20 was established in 1999 to bring together strategically important industrialized and developing economies to discuss key issues in the global economy.It includes Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Britain, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, the United States, and the European Union (EU).Together, G20 members represent around 90 percent of global gross national product, 80 percent of world trade (including EU intra-trade) and two-thirds of the world's population.

CHONGQING, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- Environmental sanitation workers from southwest China's Chongqing Municipality have collected 78,000 tonnes of garbage from the Yangtze River near the Three Gorges Dam, ensuring the dam's safe and effective operation after its water level was raised.More than 68,000 workers in nearly 21,000 boats retrieved the garbage.In late October, the water level in the dam was lifted to its designed maximum of 175 meters, allowing the dam to play its full flood control, power generation, navigation and water supply roles, said Wang Yuankai, a Chongqing municipal work administrator.Raising the dam's water level increased the surface area of water in the dam. It also increased garbage collectors' workload, with about 60 percent more garbage appearing.The cleanup operation helped ensure the water quality of the dam and its navigability.The Three Gorges Dam is the world's largest water-control and hydropower project.

LONDON, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- The British business sector was pleased at the successful visit this week of Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang which concluded on Wednesday.During the four-day visit, Li signed business agreements with an estimated value of more than 4 billion U.S. dollars with the British government."China is vital to the UK economy. China is now the world's largest goods exporter and the UK's largest goods export market outside the U.S. and EU. We are keen to realize the immense potential for deepening and broadening areas of commercial cooperation," said British Minister of State for Trade and Investment Lord Green during the visit.The British coalition government was faced with a near-record public spending deficit of 149 billion pounds (about 236.5 billion dollars) and has chosen to tackle it immediately with the deepest set of cuts to public spending since the Second World War.In such an economic climate, Vice Premier Li's visit to Britain brought welcome contracts but it also brought wider agreements that will bear fruit over a longer period, and that has been hailed as a great success.In an interview with Xinhua after Li's visit, Andy Scott, director international of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), hailed the visit's success, the achievements of the deal itself, and the longer-term prospects which were very positive.Commenting on the visit, and on the wider China-British relationship, he said, "in the long-term prospects are very positive. They are positive on the political front, they are positive on the business front. And from a political point of view I think it is very telling that this government here in the UK ... has made international trade investment one of the top priorities for Prime Minister David Cameron and right across his Cabinet."Scott said that Cameron's visit to China last November, when he headed the largest trade delegation from Britain to China and the largest ministerial delegation, was a sign of Britain's keenness to do business with China. They were setting the framework and they will themselves be providing further opportunities to develop on those frameworks," he said.In addition, he stressed "professional services, the retail sector, design, the creative area, and the whole engineering consultancy arena" where Britain has goods which China wants in its infrastructure development.Scott particularly welcomed Chinese investment into Britain, and hoped that it would continue the momentum achieved recently."We are increasingly seeing China now investing directly in UK companies and that we see as being very positive," he said.That was now "a further example of where the whole relationship with China is changing; it is not just about physical goods, it is about investment, it is about capital coming into the UK," he added.

BEIJING, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- China National Offshore Oil Company Limited (CNOOC) said Sunday Bridas Corporation, a joint-venture equally-owned by CNOOC International Limited and Argentina-based Bridas Energy Holdings (BEH), will acquire a 60 percent equity interest in Pan American Energy (PAE) from BP for approximately 7.06 billion U.S. dollars.The acquisition excludes PAE's assets in Bolivia, according to a statement on the website of CNOOC, China's largest offshore oil and gas producer.CNOOC International, a wholly owned subsidiary of the company, and BEH have agreed to contribute about 4.94 billion U.S. dollars to Bridas to finance 70 percent of the proposed acquisition. The contribution will be made in equal amounts of approximately 2.47 billion U.S. dollars by CNOOC International and BEH.The remaining 30 percent, or approximately 2.12 billion U.S. dollars, will be satisfied by third party loans to be arranged by Bridas and additional contributions from CNOOC International and BEH.Completion of the acquisition is conditional on, among others factors, all necessary government and regulatory approvals, and is expected to take place in the first half of 2011.In the first half of 2010, CNOOC International and BEH completed the formation of a half-half joint venture in Bridas.
