The larger number of faster and cheaper COVID-19 tests is offering hope.Researchers at Harvard and Brown say we need about 2 million tests a day of symptomatic people and contacts to fight the spread of the virus.When you add in testing for teachers, students, nursing home residents and staff, the number is about 4.4 million.That's around four times the amount of people being tested per day, according to the COVID Tracking Project.“So, I think it's important to make sure we actually have a goal post about where the country needs to head, because the testing manufacturers need to know what that number looks like in order to make their own business and manufacturing decisions about how to scale,” said Dr. Thomas Tsai with the Harvard T.H. That's what all Americans deserve in terms of being about to have that information to fight the pandemic.”He says testing by itself only gives you information. The police chief in Columbia, S.C. announced on Thursday that Master Police Officer David Hurt has been suspended for five days without pay and removed from the K-9 unit after the dog he was handling, Turbo, died after Hurt left Turbo in a police car for eight hours, The State newspaper reported. Hurt was participating in all-day training and left the air conditioning running and the windows down in his police car. He also reportedly had deactivated a heat sensor in the vehicle, which could have warned him to the car's rising temperatures. Hurt reportedly had an officer check on Turbo at 11:30 a.m. on July 26, which was four hours into the training. When Hurt returned to the vehicle at 3:30 p.m., he found Turbo was panting heavily, foaming at the mouth and unsteady on his feet, The State reported. Hurt then took Turbo to a veterinarian, where the 2-year-old dog was euthanized. Turbo's official cause of death was organ failure from prolonged heat exposure. In addition to his unpaid suspension and removal from the K-9 unit, Hurt will also be removed from the Columbia Police's bomb squad for six months. Last month's incident has also prompted the Columbia Police to make institutional changes to how it cares for K-9s. The National Weather Service confirmed that two EF-0 tornadoes touched down in Fort Lauderdale Tuesday afternoon.According to the National Weather Service in Miami, one tornado touched down in downtown Fort Lauderdale near Andrews Avenue and NE 5th Street at about 3:34 p.m. The tornado, packing winds of 65 mph, knocked over construction fencing and barriers. A minor tree damage was reported near NE 1st Avenue and NE 4th Street.  The NWS says the tornado touched down south of the Tarpon River in the Rio Vista neighborhood, causing tree damages and minor debris, including trash cans.  637

I stopped going to meetings. I forgot about how bad the addiction got," Hunt told CNN about that period in her life last year. "This photo helped me look back. "That's the thing that's so shocking to me to think about."What happened nextAfter a brief hospital stay came jail. Hunt had violated her probation from a previous charge in 2014.While she was waiting for her sentencing date, a local reporter requested an interview. Then another asked, and another.She didn't think much of it at the time. She found out why when she was watching the evening news.A police officer had snapped a photo of her passed out in the car. It soon went viral."I felt very humiliated, I felt very angry," she said. "You know, it was hard for me to truly believe that it was me."Hurt's story fits into a grim pattern, as research shows heroin use is on the rise in the US. The most recent United Nations' World Drug Report found that 914,000 people aged 12 years or older reported using heroin in 2014 -- a 145% increase since 2007.Where she is nowHunt has been fighting addiction all her life, she says."I had been an addict since I was 15 years old," she said. "It wasn't until I was 21 that I began seeking help -- and I was failing at it. "The overdose, captured in the photo, led to Hunt getting clean.She was sentenced to six months of intense rehab in a locked-down facility -- one that focused on the underlying issues of addiction and how to cope with them.She's part of WRAP (Women Recovering with a Purpose), a program that requires continued meetings with a therapist, a sobriety coach and multiple "self care" classes such as Narcotics Anonymous every week.Now, she works more than 40 hours a week at a local factory.
