(KGTV) — National Park Service biologists say they're seeing a boom in mountain lion births this summer in the Santa Monica Mountains and Simi Hills areas.Between May and August, researchers have seen 13 total kittens born to five mountain lion mothers. This is the first time this many mountain lion dens have been found in such a short time period during the 18-year study, according to the National Park Service. A total of 21 litters of kittens have been marked at the den site. Previously, the most dens found in one year for the study was four in 2015."This level of reproduction is a great thing to see, especially since half of our mountains burned almost two years ago during the Woolsey Fire," said Jeff Sikich, a wildlife biologist who has been studying the mountain lion population at Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. "It will be interesting to see how these kittens use the landscape in the coming years and navigate the many challenges, both natural and human-caused, they will face as they grow older and disperse."Since 2002, NPS has been studying mountain lions around the Santa Monica Mountains to determine how they survive in a fragmented and urbanized environment.To track the mountain lions, researchers wait until the mother leaves to hunt or feed. While researchers are tracking her movements, other researchers will approach the den to catalog the kittens and place a unique tag on the ear of each animal. There are thousands of suitcases in Ocean City over the summer, but police found one packed with something unusual on Tuesday. According to Lt. Schreier of the Worcester County Sherriff’s office, a couple stumbled over a trunk in the water in West Ocean City at Homer Gudelsky Park. Inside they found personal objects like shoes and pottery as well as one or two bones. Maryland State Police, Maryland Natural Resources Police and the Worcester County Sheriff's Office are on the beach investigating, and a dive team was trying to pull the trunk from the water in hopes of reserving anything that could be evidence.  664

(AP) — Authorities say a man has been arrested in Southern California after deputies found about 800 pounds of stolen lemons inside his car.Riverside County sheriff's officials say 69-year-old Dionicio Fierros was arrested Friday on suspicion of theft of agricultural products.Deputies were investigating recent farm thefts when they stopped Fierros' car in Thermal on Friday morning.Inside his car, deputies say they found several large bags of freshly picked lemons they believe were stolen from a nearby farm.A telephone number for Fierros could not be located in public records and it wasn't immediately clear if he had an attorney who could comment on the allegations. 697

Thursday marks the third anniversary of a mass shooting that left 58 people dead and more than 800 people injured.On Oct. 1, 2017, a gunman in his hotel room at the Mandalay Bay fired into a country music festival across the Las Vegas strip, killing 58 people and injuring 411 others. A total of 867 injuries were reported at the scene.The city will mark the anniversary with a sunrise memorial.
