BORREGO SPRINGS, Calif. (KGTV) - California State Parks are preparing for wildflower blooms across the state. The unpredictable and rare occurrences attract thousands of people to the parks. Some of the most beautiful blooms take place in desert landscapes. These rare blooms occur when precipitation levels in the areas are high, combined with years-long drought that eliminate grasses and weeds that take up nutrients. These conditions cause wildflowers to thrive. Vibrant wildflowers can already be seen sprouting from the typically barren brown soil in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park.“This area is just a mosaic of a painter’s colors," said Danny McCamish, Senior Environmental Scientist for the Colorado Desert District and Anza-Borrego State Park.RELATED: Photos: Gorgeous spring bloom carpets Anza Borrego desert"The early October, November rains started that germination process early this year, and so as the December, January, and February rains came in, all of the area was ripe to go off like this."Cooler temperatures are also a factor in prolonging the bloom, which the region has been experiencing thanks to snow in the mountains. McCamish says during the 2017 'super bloom' word of the beauty spread fast on social media, drawing in 6,000 to 7,000 cars a day.He says the rush of visitors overwhelmed the small town of Borrego Springs but that this year they're more prepared. Restaurants are planning to offer to-go meals and rangers will set up pop-up visitor centers to spread out where visitors go.McCamish recommends people check out other parts of the 700,000-acre region, including Ocotillo Wells State Vehicular Recreation Area.And if you plan to spend the night figure out lodging ahead of time, whether that be a hotel or camping.In addition to the flowers, visitors can enjoy nature on a bike. Ben Watkins died at the age of 14 from a rare form of cancer, after capturing the country’s attention in 2018 competing on MasterChef Junior.Watkins reportedly died in a Chicago area children’s hospital Monday, according to the family’s attorney. Watkins had a rare illness called Angiomatoid Fibrous Histiocytoma. Only six people in the world have been diagnosed with it, according to the family.“Our Ben went home to be with his mother this afternoon after a year-and-a-half-long battle with Cancer. After losing both of his parents in September 2017, we have marveled at Ben’s strength, courage and love for life. He never, ever complained. Ben was and will always be the strongest person we know,” reads a statement from the family on a GoFundMe page for Watkins.Shortly before Watkins’ appearance on MasterChef, when he was just 11 years old, his parents both died in a murder-suicide in 2017. He was cared for by an uncle and family members, according to reports.Just after his 13th birthday, Watkins was diagnosed with the rare cancer, with a soft tissue tumor. Chef Gordon Ramsay posted his tribute to the young chef on social media. Ramsay hosted the cooking competition show, and worked with Watkins in season 6.“Ben you were an incredibly talented home cook and even stronger young man. BENTONVILLE, Ark. – Walmart announced Tuesday that it’s launching a new membership program called Walmart+ that can save customers money and time.Walmart+ members will receive unlimited free delivery from stores, fuel discounts and access to tools that make shopping faster, the company said in a press release.Membership will be available to all customers on Sept. 15 and it will cost a year or .95 per month, a similar price point to Amazon Prime. BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — A Florida woman has been arrested after she allegedly beat and strangled her newborn twins to death, claiming she didn't know she was pregnant before she gave birth. Rachael Lynn Thomas, 30, told law enforcement that she gave birth to the boy and girl newborns on the toilet, according to WFTV. She said that the infants later died. An autopsy report released on Tuesday revealed that there was more to the babies' deaths than Thomas' story.According to police, Thomas called 911 from her home on Sunday "in reference to an unresponsive newborn." Thomas said she left work that morning after feeling sick. When she got home, she says she went to use the restroom and gave birth on the toilet, according to reports.Police said Thomas cut the baby boy's umbilical cord with a pair of scissors, placed him inside a blue shirt and began "cleaning up the mess," according to the arrest warrant."Baby John Doe" was pronounced dead at the hospital.When investigators went to Thomas' home, they say they found the body of a newborn girl in the trash can in a carport. Police say that it appeared as though she had tried to conceal the body with trash. Detectives say that the infant's umbilical cord was wrapped around her throat and that an object was lodged in the back of her throat. "Baby Jane Doe" was pronounced dead at the scene.According to reports, Thomas claims she didn't know she was pregnant and said that she continued to have her period until this month.Detectives said that the newborn twins suffered severe blunt force trauma to their heads.Investigators said Thomas told them “they were both dead and she got scared,” according to WFTV.Thomas was arrested on Monday afternoon and charged with child neglect and one count of tampering with evidence. On Tuesday, the charges were upgraded to one count of first-degree murder, two counts of felony murder and two counts of aggravated child abuse. Thomas has two other children.
