SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Any other year, Sonia Highbaugh and her family would be spending Christmas gathered at her sister’s house, but in true 2020 fashion, things look a little different this holiday.“I was sad this year not being able to spend the holidays with my extended family and everyone, but we make those hard decisions for the betterment of everybody,” said Highbaugh. “We actually stayed home, it’s just my immediate family, my boyfriend, and our two boys. We made videos of them opening their gifts so we can share with family so we can feel like we were together.”Highbaugh works for the Chicano Federation and says through training with the San Diego Latino Health Coalition; she received pointers on how she should be spending the holiday this year.“With the pandemic, we wanted to be safe. I’m also expecting, so it’s very important for me to stay safe,” she said.Registered Nurse Francisco Garcia can relate.“It’s just us three,” said Garcia.While breaking traditions can be challenging, Garcia, his wife, and daughter also decided to spend Christmas at home together.“Being a Latino, my family chooses to get together every year for Christmas and have food and presents. Just having everyone together is what we take pride in, and so it’s very different that we’re not around each other this year,” he said.Working as a registered nurse, Garcia knows all too well the potential consequences of large gatherings during the pandemic, especially after the surge in COVID-19 cases after Thanksgiving celebrations.“Seeing an influx of patients and the number of patients we’re seeing with COVID as the year went on was a big challenge,” he said.Health officials across the nation, including here in San Diego County, have urged people to stay home, avoid traveling and large gatherings, despite that some continue to ignore the guidance.According to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), 846,520 people in the United States were screened at TSA checkpoints on Christmas Eve alone, and millions more were screened since last Friday.Still, many families are playing safe and having a great time doing so.“It has been fantastic; I think the biggest challenge we’ve had is not burning the Christmas dinner,” said Garcia.“We have to trust our community. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Consumer prices rose by nearly four percent in San Diego over the last year largely due to an increase in the cost of gasoline, according to a new report by the U.S. Department of Labor. According to the report, prices in the San Diego area rose 3.8 percent over the last 12 months and 1 percent over the last two months. The largest increases stem from household furnishings and operations and housing, which rose by 9.3 and 5.2 percent over the last year. The report points out that an increase in prices for food and energy over the last two months was fueled by higher gas prices. The energy index jumped 11.4 percent over the last two months mainly due to higher gas prices, according to the report. Over the last year, food from home increased by more than 2 percent while food away from home actually decreased by 0.4 percent. California's gas tax will jump by another 5.6 cents per gallon on July 1, 2019. Although the report may seem discouraging, the cost increases were at least partially offset by a 1.1 percent price decline in education and communication. The report shows that items like cereal and baked goods were up by nearly 2 percent from May of 2018 to March of 2019. Apparel was up by more than 6 percent from May of 2018 to March of 2019. Milk and dairy products also rose by 2 percent in the same time period. Consumer prices increased in a similar way in neighboring Los Angeles. Over the last year, prices in Los Angeles rose by more than three percent, but May only saw prices rise by 0.2 percent. The report shows that the cost of household goods and operations rose by nearly 6 percent while housing jumped 4.4 percent. In the west as a whole, consumer prices rose by nearly 3 percent while increasing by 0.5 percent in May. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- City Council members Friday announced a plan to push for a temporary shelter for the homeless in Murphy Canyon.Council members Lorie Zapf and David Alvarez will hold a news conference Monday to request that a shelter be built at the former Chargers training facility.The complex, owned by the city, has remained unused since the Chargers moved to Los Angeles and will likely remain vacant for several more years.Announcing the press conference, the councilmembers said, “The San Diego River has seen an explosion of homeless encampments this year. This is an environmental nightmare and extremely dangerous with the rainy season rapidly approaching.”More than 100 homeless encampments were counted by volunteers with the San Diego River Park Foundation in October. 792

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- County health officials are notifying people who may have been exposed to tuberculosis at locations throughout San Diego County. According to County News Center, three unrelated cases of the disease were reported in San Diego County between August 20 and October 18. Two of the cases were reported at San Diego County Sheriff’s detention facilities. RELATED: Tuberculosis case confirmed at San Diego Airport, exposure risk extremely lowThe third case was found in a person who arrived from out of town after being diagnosed with TB and spent time at one of the city’s bridge shelters. Investigators believe the individual arrived in San Diego after leaving a Long Beach hospital without permission. The third person died from “co-occurring medical conditions” at a local hospital on October 6. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Crime Stoppers released photos Wednesday to find a man and woman suspected of two armed robberies in Otay Mesa and Pacific Beach. The first robbery happened the afternoon of Sunday, July 28 at Tepito Club, a clothing store at 2364 Roll Drive. Police said the pair selected merchandise and approached the clerk, then the woman pulled a gun and demanded cash. The couple took the money and drove off in a blue Toyota Corolla. One day later, police said the two suspects gathered items at the Chevron gas station at 1575 Garnet Ave., eventually demanding cash from the clerk. The man and woman walked away from the area with the money, police said. The suspects are both white, according to Crime Stoppers. The woman is 5’6”, thin, and was wearing a black tank top and grey leggings. The man has a medium build, and is about 30 years old with tattoos. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. Information leading to an arrest can result in a ,000 reward. 1012
