According to the National Weather Service office in Morristown, the largest earthquake on record in East Tennessee was a magnitude 4.7 near Marysville in 1973. The USGS?studied the reason why earthquakes are felt at much farther distances on the east coast, compared with earthquakes that hit the west coast. Researchers found that some factors have to do with tectonic plates and their geological history. The US Food and Drug Administration pressed forward with its investigation of e-cigarette companies Friday, sending letters to 21 companies in an effort to uncover whether they are marketing products illegally and outside the agency's compliance policy.This latest phase of the investigation addresses more than 40 e-cigarette products and is part of the agency's ongoing efforts to combat e-cigarette use among youth. It also comes less than two weeks after the agency conducted a surprise inspection of e-cigarette maker Juul's corporate headquarters in San Francisco, seizing thousand of documents, many of which relate to its sales and marketing practices."Companies are on notice," FDA Commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb said in a statement Friday. "The FDA will not allow the proliferation of e-cigarettes or other tobacco products potentially being marketed illegally and outside of the agency's compliance policy, and we will take swift action when companies are skirting the law."In September, Gottlieb called the increasing teen use of e-cigarettes "an epidemic," adding that teen nicotine use is dangerous to young people's health and brains.Federal law prohibits the sale of e-cigarettes to people under the age of 18, but more than 2 million middle and high school students were current users of e-cigarettes in 2017, according to the FDA. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says it's the most common nicotine product used by middle and high schoolers.Also last month, the FDA requested that five major e-cigarette manufacturers, including Juul, explain how they plan to combat the use of their products by minors. The agency said it was looking into steps to eliminate the sale of flavored products and unveiled a public education campaignabout e-cigarettes.The FDA said it's considering civil and criminal avenues to enforce these regulations, including fines, seizures and injunctions, according to Friday's announcement.CNN reached out to some of the companies that received letters for comment but did not immediately receive a response."We're going to address issues related to the access kids have to e-cigarettes, as well as the youth appeal of these products," Gottlieb said Friday. The travel industry is trying new tactics to recover from financial stress. Experts say new deals are emerging that allow people to go on a trip of their dreams through 2022."We quickly realized that the number one factor that helped incentivize travel planning, travel booking, even for 12 to 18 months down the road was this high sense of flexibility, and so, we came up with this concept of putting out and working with hundreds of thousands of travel partners to really come up with these very attractive, aggressively-priced offers, explained Gabe Saglie, senior editor of Travelzoo, a company that facilities travel deals around the world. “But they are fully refundable, and they had these very long travel windows.”Saglie says when COVID-19 hit, the industry came to a screeching halt. But through surveys of its 15 million members, Travelzoo soon found people were still willing to book, but mostly for future trips and not just any trip."People are looking not just to travel, but travel in a memorable way, a special way. So, we’ve been putting out these offers that in some cases are destinations that pre-COVID may not have been on people’s radar. Sort of far-flung bucket-list destinations," said Saglie.Aran Campas, the co-founder of the social media travel site Travevel, says the pent-up demand for travel is showing in different ways."We're seeing two extremes. When we look in groups, forums, different areas, we have the people that are like, 'I’m going now. I’m tired of being trapped. I’m not worried about it, I’m going now. I’m going to wear my mask,’ and then, we have the people who are like, 'Oh, I just booked for 2022 or 2023,'" explained Campas.Campas says pre-pandemic, people generally booked a year or less in advance. Now, they're seeing people either book a trip in the next 30 days or two years from now."What I think it is, I don't think it's so much the flexibility, I think it's let's get someone to book," said Campas.Travelzoo says the help in cashflow is certainly good for the longevity of the industry."There is this infusion of traveler cash now that is helping a lot of these companies. A lot of our travel partners that are looking to employ as many employees on the books as possible, bring back as many employees as quickly as possible. That’s certainly an infusion that’s important, as it helps the industry navigate through these next couple of months until we’re on the other side of this," said Saglie.So, how long will these flexible travel deals be around? Experts aren't too sure.As soon as life gets back to normal and regular travel resumes, the deals could be gone. But if you're wanting to book these deals and possibly change the dates later, Travevel says pay attention to the fine print as some may increase the prices if you adjust your date of travel. 2824
The sidewalk vendors who have set up shop along the Mission Beach boardwalk may soon have to a find a new place to sell their wares. It's part of a series of regulations a City Council committee advanced at its meeting Thursday. The vendors have come in waves after a new state law decriminalized the practice, reducing any fines to administrative. The city, as a result, is no longer enforcing its rules that conflict with the law. As such, the vendors have set up shop along Mission Beach and other areas with heavy foot traffic. On Thursday, the boardwalk had vendors selling jewelry, sports team beach bags, and even tobacco pipes. "I hope they don't take this area away from us, the tourists love us and we just love this area to set up and vend," said Tina Saito, who was selling the pipes and rock necklaces on the boardwalk. The state law blocks the city from instituting restrictions based on economics, so it can't stop a vendor from opening outside an established business. The city can, however, enact regulations based on public safety. As such, the city's proposed ordinance would require food vendors - like the ones that lined Balboa Park at Pride earlier this month - to have county health permits and a food handlers card. It would also restrict hours in parks, and place a summer moratorium on vending in Balboa Park. The city would also block vendors from popular areas like Newport Avenue in Ocean Beach, Garnet Avenue in Pacific Beach, the Mission Beach boardwalk, the La Jolla Shores boardwalk, and the area around Petco Park on Padre game days. Finally, it would disallow vendors from selling things like alcohol, drug and tobacco paraphernalia, and weapons. Saito, who sells the tobacco pipes, called that potential decision disappointing.
