SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California's leaders are getting a raise.A state commission voted Friday to increase Governor Gavin Newsom's salary from 2,000 to around 0,000 in December. The Citizens Compensation Commission also agreed to give a 4% raise to legislators and other state elected officials, such as the lieutenant governor and treasurer.Chairman Tom Dalzell cited the health of the state's economy and California's budget surplus for the move."California remains high," he said of pay for state officials. "So is our cost of living."Newsom will not be the highest-paid governor, however. While America's most populous state currently has the highest-earning chief executive, the New York Legislature voted this year to pay Gov. Andrew Cuomo a salary of 5,000 in 2020 and 0,000 in 2021.But the governor will still earn far more than California's median income, which is around ,000, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. This will mark the seventh year in a row California's governor has gotten a raise and Newsom's pay will near a previous peak for the job of around 2,000.Rank-and-file members of the 120-seat Legislature earn around 0,000, still below a past peak of around 6,000. The lieutenant governor is paid around 1,000, the attorney general around 5,000 and the controller and treasurer around 1,000.Created in 1990 following a statewide vote, the commission is appointed by the governor and usually meets once a year to set the salaries as well as benefits for California's elected officers. The Legislature was previously responsible for setting the salaries of state elected officials. 1644

Rooted in its western heritage, Arizona has long been a state focused on freedoms.“Historically it was a lot of ranchers and rural,” said Valerie Hoekstra, Politics and Global Studies Professor at Arizona State University. “You’re not required to wear a helmet on a motorcycle, you can sit in the back of a pickup truck. All these things that are part of the individualistic tradition that sometimes overlap with liberal values, and sometimes just that western culture.”But things are shifting in the Grand Canyon State.“I don’t think we can count it as a red state anymore, it’s not a blue state for sure either,” Hoekstra said.A Democratic presidential candidate has not carried the state of Arizona since Bill Clinton did so 24 years ago in 1996. However, Tuesday night’s election results show Arizona’s Republican preference is shifting. There’s heavy support this election for both Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, and U.S. Senate Candidate Mark Kelly. Both gaining major support in areas like Phoenix and Tucson, two of Arizona’s most populous areas.Several factors may be contributing to the political shift. Over the years, Arizona has become a hot spot for transplants from across the country, especially California, a largely Democratic-leaning state. About 60,000 Californians moved to Arizona in 3017 alone, according to Census Bureau data. Then there’s also Arizona’s growing Hispanic population.“The increasing Latino Latina population in this state that happens to be Democratic leaning and identify as Democrats,” Hoekstra said. And then there’s the young people.“The universities are huge and growing and the students seem to be more active.”That’s a change from the new residents Arizona is often known for attracting. “It was a haven for retirees and snowbirds,” she said. “People who don't really want to pay taxes and moved here for those reasons.”State voter registration statistics show a record number of registered voters in Arizona as of November 2020, with just over 4.2 million. For comparison, the state’s population is closing in on 7.3 million people as of last year. Of the registered voters, 35.24% registered as Republican and 32.20% as Democrat. Getting those voters to turn out, is another battle.“Just the candidates themselves mobilize people one way or another, or demobilize some people maybe, too,” Hoekstra explained. She said just because Arizona swung blue this time, doesn’t mean it will in the future as the demographics of the state continue to change. “It’s up for grabs.” 2540

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say somebody stole a tripod from a California Department of Transportation crew and then dropped it from an overpass onto a Sacramento freeway, impaling the lung of a passenger in a van.The driver of the van, Tim Page, tells KCRA-TV that he was on Interstate 5 Thursday morning when the yellow-and-red tripod smashed through the glass. He says it went through his passenger's lung and popped out.The man survived but with broken ribs and a partially punctured lung.Authorities say a 32-year-old man, who the Sacramento Bee identified as homeless, threw the tripod was arrested after a brief struggle and chase. He had an outstanding warrant but may face a charge of attempted murder.Page volunteers with El Dorado Veteran Resources and had picked up his passenger, another veteran, from the airport. 845

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) — A pilot ejected moments before an F-16 fighter jet crashed Thursday into a warehouse just outside March Air Reserve Base in California, military officials said. The pilot was not hurt, and there were no immediate reports of injuries on the ground, said Maj. Perry Covington, director of public affairs at the base. The cause of the crash was under investigation.Interstate 215, which runs between the base and the warehouse, was closed in both directions, backing up rush-hour traffic for miles.Television news showed a large hole in the roof and sprinklers on inside the building about 65 miles east of Los Angeles.Cellphone photos and video from inside showed what appeared to be the tail of the plane buried in twisted metal and piles of cardboard boxes.Daniel Gallegos, a warehouse worker, said he's used to hearing the sound of planes coming and going, but the noise just before the crash was deafening."Next thing I know I just hear this explosion and turn around to the back of the building, and I just seen a burst of flames and just the ceiling started falling through every part of the building," he told KABC-TV . "I turned around, and my co-worker just told me to get, so I just made a run for it."Gallegos said he believed one of his co-workers was struck by something — possibly a falling fire sprinkler — but wasn't seriously hurt. The crash happened as the pilot was landing following a routine training mission, March Air Reserve Base Deputy Fire Chief Timothy Holliday said."The pilot was having hydraulic problems," Holliday said. "He started losing control of the aircraft."The jet's cockpit canopy was on a runway, and a parachute had settled in a nearby field.Damage to the warehouse was relatively minor, and there was no major fire, which Holliday called "a miracle."The pilot, the only person on board, was taken to a hospital for examination, officials said. The F-16, assigned to the Air National Guard, was carrying standard armaments, Holliday said. It will be recovered once authorities make sure the weapons don't pose a risk, he said. The base is home to the Air Force Reserve Command's Fourth Air Force Headquarters and various units of the Army Reserve, Navy Reserve, Marine Corps Reserve, California Air National Guard and California Army National Guard.Watch live video in the player below: 2356
