SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man is in custody after a chase ended in a standoff with police at a Mission Bay Motel Sunday morning. Police say the chase started just before 9 a.m. at the A-1 Storage on Garnett Avenue after officers received a citizens' tip. The suspect driving a U-Haul truck led police on a short chase to the 4300 block of Mission Bay Drive near Roadway in San Diego.According to police, the man is wanted on felony weapons charges. After the chase ended, a woman in the passenger seat was detained while the driver ran into the nearby motel. The woman was later released. While searching for the suspect throughout the motel, officers learned that the man broke through several walls to try and escape. “This guy starts forcing himself into apartments, and now we have to deal with a possible hostage situation. That’s the reason why we brought so many resources down here. We wanted to get this guy into custody as fast as we can," Lt. Christian Sharp with the San Diego Police Department said. Eventually, police had to use chemical gas and a K-9 to apprehend the suspect, who has yet to be identified.  1166

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Rancho Bernardo hotel hit hard by the loss of midweek conventions is taking new steps to fill vacant rooms."We were doing pretty good and then Labor Day came and we fell off a cliff again," said Jeff Livingston, who directs sales at the Rancho Bernardo Inn. Livingston says the number of employees has gone from the hundreds into the dozens, as the business conventions the inn depends on have all but dried up. Now, the Rancho Bernardo Inn deems success at 35% occupancy, a number that a year earlier was upwards of 90%. "During the week we're literally sometimes in single digits," Livingston said. "There are times where there are more staff than there are guests." The Rancho Bernardo Inn has plenty of company. San Diego's tourism industry has lost 52,000 jobs in the last year, a nearly 26% drop, according to data released Friday by the Employment Development Department. The region's unemployment rate was 9% in September, with jobs down 117,000 over the year. Lynn Reaser, chief economist at Point Loma Nazarene University, said hotels are seeing a few more visitors because of road trips, but that business will be limited until a vaccine arrives.Meanwhile, the Rancho Bernardo Inn has dropped its rates on Sunday nights through Thursday, in some instances offering two nights for the price of one. But that's not all it's doing. Livingston said he and other workers are knocking on doors, visiting businesses, and doing all they can to spread the word about the discounts. Additionally, the hotel converted one of its meeting rooms to a kids game room. It has also arranged for a bird trainer on weekends that brings an owl and a falcon, which eat rabbit meat off of a guest's gloved hand for . "No stone goes unturned and there really isn't a bad idea right now," Livingston said.Livingston said beekeeping could be next. He said if the occupancy rate can get to at least 40% and stay that way, more jobs could come back. Meanwhile, the San Diego Tourism Authority is spending upwards of 0,000 on an advertising campaign called "Yay Weekdays," meant to help area hotels fill rooms normally taken by conventions. The ads will run online and via streaming services through January. 2227

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Pacific Beach bartender was sucker-punched by a man he said refused to wear a face mask.Tony Aversa, bar lead at 710 Beach Club, said he was working on Saturday, Sept. 5, when he noticed a confrontation at the door around 7 p.m.He says he walked over to the three men and, "I just asked them to please put on a mask and I'll happily help you with whatever you need ... The guy just refused and continued to argue blatantly within inches of my face with no mask on."A female bartender walked over and Aversa said the man shoved her, so he put himself between the man and his coworker. That's when Aversa said another member of the combative group came running."He was walking away at the time and came running back down the sidewalk and blind-sided me with a punch ... Immediately, you could tell my nose was broken, I was gushing blood and I knew immediately what had happened, I kinda spun around and asked one of my employees to call the cops," Aversa said.He said an officer was there within a few minutes and walked with him, finding one of the men. Bystanders said the man who threw the punch got into a car and sped off.Police describe the man as Pacific Islander, 6'2", 260 lbs., with curly brown hair, and wearing a white t-shirt and dark basketball shorts. When we asked if Aversa had anything to say to the man, he said no. "I just want to see him put to justice at this point," says Aversa.Aversa will be seeing a surgeon later this week for his broken nose. "The right nostril is collapsed I can't breathe out of that and then the sinus cavity on my cheek got fractured so the inside of my mouth and teeth are bruised so I'm drinking smoothies for another week," he said.If you have any information on this crime, please call SDPD at 619-531-2000 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 888-580-8477.Aversa hopes this doesn't happen to anyone else and that others can be kind during this difficult time."I didn't sign up for this job to be a mask babysitter ... That's not what any of us want to do but it is what we have to do to stay in business," says Aversa.Aversa isn't alone in attacks like this. Seven months into the pandemic, assaults on workers trying to enforce state guidelines have gone up. In August, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker passed a law making these assaults felonies to protect workers. 2342

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A mom shopping with her one-year-son leapt into action when she found a car burglar inside her SUV in University City.On Wednesday morning at the Vons on Governor Drive, Gloria spent about 15 minutes shopping inside. Her son was sitting in the cart. As soon as she pushed the loaded cart out of the store, her eyes zeroed in on her SUV, parked close to the store."I was kind of in disbelief. Someone was in the car and the passenger door was wide open," said Gloria.Gloria saw a man rummaging through her center console and started screaming. She pushed every button on her key fob."The panic alarm actually went off. Scared the living daylights out of him, and he took off running," said Gloria. Moments after, she found her phone in her purse and starting recording. Surveillance video shows her take off in his direction. Holding tightly to her son, she continued to scream. Still pushing the cart, she followed him. "Definitely adrenaline and pure anger," said Gloria.Gloria has been a victim of three car burglaries in the past five years."I'm going to get you this time. You're not going to do this to anybody else," Gloria kept thinking. Less than a minute later, she followed him across the parking lot to a U-Haul truck before he drove off. She got a photo of him and the license plate. Possibly realizing Gloria got video, the guy ditched the truck, which was recovered hours later. She says police told her it was loaded with stuff: some of her belongings and other items, likely stolen. Police say the license plate led them to a local address, but the man wasn't there. Gloria says a few miscellaneous items were returned to her. A child's wallet remains missing.Anyone with information on the case is asked to call San Diego Police at 619-531-2000. 1790
